Tavern In Surfside — Restaurant in South Carolina

August 2024. I can't remember exactly what day. Maybe the 10th or 11th. We went back again after I wrote the review below this one. I thought we'd give it another try. The hostess was very friendly and seated us in the best spot so the A/C would not be blasting on us. The waitress was great. Quick to greet us, take our order and deliver the food. The inside was not as nice as I remember it being. Unless I just noticed the floor paint for the first time. The bathrooms were not clean. They had only been open for an hour or so that was a bit perplexing. I like the Tavern in Carolina Forest so much better. I won't be back to this one though.

The wait time for a table was long. Told 20 minutes, but it was more like 40 due to the kitchen being behind. We weren't allowed to sit at our empty table just to start on drinks which made no sense to me. So we went to the bar and were forgotten about, but finally got our drinks, then the table was ready, so our waiter said, "Oh I see you already have drinks." Sad for him because he could have gotten a bigger tip. Our waiter was good and the food was excellent for some of us (4). One person said there food was not hot and oddly we didn't get knives so we had to ask for them. Our waiter never brought them, but the other waiter did. I had the fish and chips and the fries and hush puppies came out nice and crisp and the fish was very good. My meal came out hot. The prices are fair. I would go back again, but maybe to the one in Carolina Forest instead as they seem to be a bit more experienced and able to manage staffing a bit better. Save for the seating debacle, poor service at the bar and the lack of knives I would have given them a 5 star. P.S. 1 Star is more than The Tavern deserves. Our group has been going here every Tuesday night for Music Bingo for over a year. The size of our group has rapidly increased to a total of 25 people. Throughout the past year, the entire staff has been very accommodating by holding a section for us and assigning the most competent server(s) to take care of us. Last week a couple complained that they could not get seated right away and had to wait a long time for a table. This episode was enough for the new manager, Angel to deny our group seating this past Tuesday and was happy to tell us that going forward they would no longer reserve our section on Tuesday evenings. In fact when we walked in there yesterday she pointed out that a party of 5 arrived there 15 minutes before us which she purposely sat at a table in our normal section. She also seemed happy to tell us that she could not accommodate us as a group anymore but she would be more than happy to seat us all separately around the restaurant. We were all completely shocked after being treated like our loyalty to the tavern meant nothing to them. No one from our group will ever step foot into this establishment again!

Thank you for your response, however, your claim that we were made aware of this last week is false...further, the comment about our group being rude and cursing to the point that our server was embarrassed and apologized for our behavior is also a blatant lie. Our server also confirmed that as well. The only people that were rude last week were the guy and his wife that had to wait to be seated. These are the two individuals that started this entire mess regardless of what you may say about your policies. You have to remember that your entire staff accommodated us with pleasure for over a year. What changed...

Came in with family, we usually come in every 4-6 weeks to have something nice. This visit was far from nice. We arrived at 2:36 pm, between the lunch and dinner crowd. For a Thursday this spot is usually jamming, but not today. It could have been because of the little boy Julian who was screaming and carrying on while in a Tavern! Honestly, this is not preschool and he should not have been there. Perhaps it was the father? who was making obscene comments about women changing their underwear vs. the color of their hair in a voice that carried throughout the Tavern? Seriously this is not the place it once was. We were told by a wait staff that all the mangers and all the waitresses quit in one day. How depressing! The worst of it all is the food. We ordered potato skins which were frozen in the middle of the potatoes, not just one, but 3 of the 4 on the plate. Did you use a thermometer to make sure they were fully cooked? No, I don't think you did. The waiter was nice enough to bring us 2 more, but they were not done in the middle either. Perhaps the sour cream or the handmade dressing was sour or bad? I ordered the Italian Sub, with mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was served as if I was a child ordering from the kids menu, the kind of heat and serve you would get at Red Robin? We were comped on the potato skins but the meal took over an hour to get to us. By the time we were done with out meal it was 5 till 4 PM. At 6:36 when we got home from our outings, I didn't feel 100%. I made it to the bathroom just in time to start throwing up the food I had ingested at the Tavern at Surfside. I was the whole night.
