Ono Hawaiian BBQ — Restaurant in South Gate

So I've always had a lot to say about this place pre-pandemic. The food is always very tasty. I felt I always held back.

After visiting today for the first time since this pandemic began I must say.... I am extremely disappointed.

The food quality and taste was normally great, but today I visited a location and besides there being a long wait (it was probably longer pre-pandemic, this has always been a thing) - I noticed that the portions are less. Way less. I ordered the Island Fire Chicken and when I opened my plate it was like they forgot to fill it up. Like they that I ordered a two side Aloha Plate and forgot to put the other side.

It was that messy and incomplete. My theory is they are doing this because of the pandemic - which is fine - but at the very least warn the customer that portions will be way less. I order this, an Aloha Plate and two orders of Spam Musubi and it was about 35 dollars. Not cheap or free and this is why I am writing this review.

OMG SO GOOD! We were on a birthday trip to cali for the kids and one of their requests was to eat chicken katsu! i looked online and found nothing with good reviews but on the way back to the hotel one night we spotted Ono and even though we were exhausted we decided to give it a try and im so glad we did! It was so delicious! The chicken was so crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside. The rice was perfection! and the salad was perfect! The serving sizes were Perfect! Aloha vibes all around! The moment we stepped in, we were greeted with such genuine hospitality, it felt like we were dining in a Hawaiian home. The staff was friendly, accommodating, and quick to serve. The food? Absolutely phenomenal! The mahi-mahi was grilled to perfection, and the pineapple fried rice had just the right balance of sweetness and savoriness. The cocktails, especially the Mai Tai, were refreshing and packed a punch.
