We had been excited to try this place as we saw a few locations in town. We finally got two chais on the way out of South Tahoe. Maybe it was a bad batch, but it had so much clove in them that our mouths/tongues got numb with the smallest sip. We gave it a few chances to acclimate to the taste, but it was too much. We tried the original chai as well as the maté one, to which they might just have added a syrup or something because it was simply sweeter than the OG, but just as numbing. Forget Starbucks, forget all other coffee shops. If you want the best cup of coffee, prepared by the friendliest, most knowledgeable baristas in South Lake Tahoe, head straight to The Free Bird on U. S. 50. It's a small place (no inside seating) serving all organic drinks that's easy to miss just driving by, but well worth the effort to find. The two baristas quizzed me on exactly the attributes I look for in a cup of coffee from the beans to the type of milk to the sugar. The results: coffee perfection. If you are looking to experience a true locals spot, this is IT! Visited from out of town and was called by the house made Chai and was not disappointed! Perfect balance of an earthy sweetness and spice. Absolutely unreal. If you like overly sweet chai from syrups and powders, this ain't your spot.
