This place was recommended by a coworker of my step-father's and so I made a reservation online through their website so as to get a table reserved for my mother's birthday. First issue came up right away, their system and/or host (male who looked sort of like a human version of Miss Piggy the Muppet) was either lacking the training or simply couldn't find our reservation.
Regardless, he agreed to seat us (party of 3), first at a table in the bar area which was not preferred by my mother, the birthday gal. So we requested a different table. The host begrudgingly and irritatedly sighed, and seated us elsewhere.
When I got up to use the bathroom after waiting several minutes for our server to greet us, I asked the host where the restrooms were. The GM stated "you're almost there," while the host just pointed and said "yeah, over there." Then, when he thought I wasn't in ear-shot, he said "she's clearly not a server." He would be right. I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist and clinical psychologist, not to mention a small business owner and CEO of my own virtual healthcare company.
Let's move on to the food, shall we? Well, yikes. I ordered a whiskey steak skewer, just one which was $27 or $28, done rare and a virgin pineapple mojito or something like that. The mocktail took them 15 minutes to make for some reason even though it was soda water and pineapple juice and lime. The skewer which was about 2 oz of meat came out overdone; like, very well done; no pink, no red, no blood. After waiting for over 30 minutes for our food, I was disappointed to say the least. My feedback to the GM ended up being 'this cow died for naught.' And I was quite literally starving. My mother's fish and chips, per her feedback, were mediocre at best and very little fish was on her plate, especially consider how overwhelmed her plate was with fries. My step-father's burger was done to perfection, however, it literally made him sick to his stomach within 10 minutes of eating it. Upon making my complaint, our server became seemingly annoyed and told the manager to "talk to her." Manager came out, was very gracious and offered to have it remade on the fly. The second-try skewer was more in ounces but still overdone. I filled up on kale and called it a day. I made another complaint which the server was even more annoyed by and then continued to 'talk shade' about it with the table behind us. (In the server's defense, the table behind us was a 4 top with larger sized humans that were very clearly local per their Twin Cities attire; btw, I'm from Saint Paul but long ago to live my best life elsewhere). My feedback to the GM was to coach his chef in pulling the meat off the broiler/grill well before and let it rest. Rare small cuts of filet or strip need only be seared and cooked for about 2 minutes. Otherwise, this cow died for nothing. He agreed. The table behind continued to throw shade until I got up and set on the other side of our table and gave them a glare and then a smile. There was a banquet room nearby and the serving staff were spending most of their time tending to that. We waited close to 30 minutes for our check. The server tried to make nice with us but I'm afraid our experience was already quite the disaster. My mother was very disappointed, and needless to say, won't be back. I can see this place has potential with the very large outdoor patio but I won't bother driving all the way down to South Saint Paul from northern metro TC to be disappointed again. The mocktails at The Alchemist and their sister bars in White Bear Lake are far better. Best wishes, Stockyard. And please work on your manners, serving and hosting staff. I'm always listening, have 20+ years worth of friends in the Twin Cities metro area and over a decade combined of living in Los Angeles and NYS. I won't be recommending your cute lil spot to them unless they're looking for a happy hour spot...
Read moreWe stopped in to the Kaposia Club on a Sunday morning, we live very close by and have been wanting to give it a try since the reviews on Facebook were so good. We sat down and no one came to take our drink order for over 10 minutes, which was a little understandable because they had Bingo going on throughout the restaurant. When our waitress did come to our table, we just ordered all our food, including an appetizer. She took the order on a tablet, which seemed confusing and just dumb actually, if you ask me. Our appetizer did not come out first which seemed a little off to me. Our waitress never came back to check in on us until about half hour into our wait when she tells us she accidentally rang our order up as take out so they are remaking it? We waited about 60 minutes for our food and when it finally came out, my boyfriend's burger and soup were cold and my order was just wrong. I ordered a simple patty melt and fries and what I received was a plain burger on a bun. No cheese, no grilled onions, no Rye Bread, just a cold beef patty on a bun :/ ohhh and our appetizer of pickle chips (cold too) was supposed to come with a ranch dipping sauce but we never received that. I told the waitress my order was wrong so she said she would fix it. 25 minutes later after my boyfriend ate as much as he could of his burger, my patty melt came out. It was hot at least, but so bad? I just don't understand how someone could put so much money into a new building with all the cool decor and the nice bar and care so little about the food and the service? Honestly, reading through some of these reviews on google, I am thinking the GM needs to be walking around to tables asking customers how things are going because something is off!! I just don't get how cooking 2 burgers can take a full hour and they still taste like cold,...
Read moreDecided to have a delayed birthday celebration dinner recently at the Chop House, we had a party of four. Really nice restaurant/bar and decor that was both clean and inviting. Noticed right off the bat by the decal on the door that there was an air exchange system installed to clean the air of germs which is a good thing! Great location for us in the middle of the dining room with a view of the modern fireplace. I ordered the sirloin steak requesting medium well. When my steak arrived it was more medium rare but I didn't want to make a fuss. Next time I will be sure to say "no red or pink" or order it more well done. The size of the portion was fine but the quality of the steak was not that great. Other diners had the rotisserie 1/2 chicken dinner and reported it to be very good. Another diner had the same larger sirloin that I did and was OK with it but also under done and more rare in spots. The service was fine at a relaxed pace and we enjoyed our interactions with the staff. The prices seem right to us since everything is going up. Another diner had the French Dip sandwich and was happy with it. I am anxious to return to the restaurant to try some other menu items. They have a very large menu with lots of choices. The rib eye was priced at $45.00 and that seemed expensive for me to choose but I might have been happier with it! This is a very nice place for a special dinner out...and the outdoor patio looks great too for this summer. I look forward to...
