I have a lot to say about Wolcott’s, but most of it can be crystalized down into a few succinct words. Excellent food, professional friendly service, comfortable historic setting, good wine, the best company, one of the hight points of our journey.
Of course the food was extraordinary, people had talked about it ever since we arrived in Southern Pines, a town that simply radiates a sense of Southern Charm and old world history and Wolcotts seems to quietly exemplify that character on its little side street. Not bragging. Not making a fuss. Just serving a refined lesson in what visiting Souther Pines is all about. I mean the essence.
The Steak was perfect, the bone marrow was nothing short of a revelation, The word Savory does not begin describe it. You would think that at some point it would stop being savory and start being salty, but some kind of magic happens, some alchemy, like lead turning into gold and a new level is reached. That’s the bone marrow. Now I understand cannibals and Zombies. And I should bow my head for a moment and consider the Holy Fry, or as they call it, Pome Frittes. They came hiding beneath the bone marrow like the nest of a rare bird of prey, the whole plate like a wild delectable puzzle to be taken apart and explored a piece at a time. The Pomes were Honkin amazing! Every single one of them absolutely crispy perfection! They didn’t need salt, they were’t too salty, they were amazing.
The waitress treated us like we were old friends and like she was happy and proud to be there. Like the menu was something special, like we were something special. This is what real professionals do. Staff who have mastered service as an art and understand it puts them on an equal footing with the world. Staff who are comfortable in their skin and make their guest comfortable at their tables. Walcott’s is a special place. It’s not a facade like so many places, it’s real right down to its foundations.
And why do we come to places like this? With the dearest of friends, with kind family that we have not seen in so many years? Why do we choose Walcott’s for our final night n the South? To start new traditions. To create new deep family memories, new stories, new...
Read moreNever heard of this place from anyone I know, the wife found it on some reviews. From the second we walked in it was different, there is no greeting area, you are basically standing right next to three tables right by the door. That must have really sucked last night to be one of those three tables because I felt the draft from the open door when we left and it was really cold last night. Inside the place is small, maybe 15 tables. The menu is small also, if I remember right it was 6-7 appetizers, 3-4 salads, and 7 entree's. We were a party of 4 and from the second I saw the menu, I didn't really like any of the pairings, the main protein looked good but mixed in a way I don't really care for. My wife was the only person to actually order a meal, she got the chicken and enjoyed it but it was nothing special. To my surprise our friends who ordered first must have been thinking the same exact thing I was because they both ordered appetizers, so I went that way and ordered one too. My wife enjoyed her wine, I enjoyed my perfectly made old fashioned. We just ended up drinking and catching up with our friends. The staff was great but I wouldn't go back. The place was way too small and way to expensive for the selection/atmosphere. I'm down to spend way too much for food, but you better entertain me or something. I can think of several other places in southern pines to eat that aren't as expensive with better selection and a...
Read moreMan, pre-COVID I would have given kudos so with the world as it is right now, my hats off to Wolcott's and specifically the general manger Matt.
My wife and I lived in the area until two years ago and just recently moved within driving distance of the area. Occasionally we have reason to visit the area and on our most recent trip we decided to go out for a drink in downtown
Our first stop was at a location that was borderline rude (apparently we weren't hipster enough).
Having never tried Wolcotts next door when we lived in the area we decided to give it a try, seeing several parties still dining inside at the 2100 hour.
Immediately upon entering the establishment Matt let us know that they had stopped serving and he was very sorry. We figured 0 for 2, thanked him, and turned and started to leave.
Moments after leaving Matt dashes outside to let us know of another establishment we could try. He became aware we were only looking for a drink and replied, 'that's all, shoot, you can come back in and I'll take care of you'.
They were wrapping up inside for the evening but didn't hesitate to be hospitable.
The drinks were exquisite, the serve unparalleled.
We cannot wait to go back and sample the food. ...
