Visited from out of town. We’re from Texas and take our soul food and Cajun food pretty seriously lol As soon as we opened the door, we were greeted by a warm welcome from the manager and immediately felt at home. All of the staff were incredibly nice and helpful, not just to customers, but to each other. It was nice to see the entire operation flowing smoothly and look around to see everyone, from customers to staff members in great spirits.
A basket of cornbread comes complimentary. I prefer my cornbread with a little butter and honey in the recipe so that it’s buttery and sweet. This cornbread was more on the plain side, but it was not super flavorful. Overall a good piece of cornbread though.
For appetizers we ordered the sweet potato muffins, corned beef egg rolls, and gumbo. The muffins were AMAZING! 10/10 will be dropping by to order some before we head back. My 1 year old loved them as well. I did not eat the corned beef egg rolls. My husband said it was okay. Had never had them before so didn’t have any expectation. Said it just tasted like beef in an egg roll lol The gumbo was not bad, but I wouldn’t call it southern gumbo. It tastes like it had cumin and some other Mexican dish style flavors. Almost kind of tasted like taco soup. It wasn’t bad, but just wasn’t a traditional southern/new orleans gumbo flavor profile in my opinion.
For entrees we all got the Bayou plate with rib tips, chicken wings and catfish. Wasn’t a rib tip fan. The chicken you can tell is brined, but could use some exterior seasoning, and the catfish was seasoned well. Could have been crispier, so next time I’ll ask for really well done.
For sides we had macaroni, yams, greens and red beans and rice. The red beans and rice we sent back and subbed for more yams. It had the same flavor profile as the gumbo which just didn’t do well with the dish for us. The macaroni was cool. The greens were okay but could’ve used a dash of some seasoning. The yams…straight fire! Makes sense because the sweet potato muffins were bomb. It’s not the best soul food we’ve ever had, but it was definitely good enough for us to come back and the people were so nice. We appreciated the southern hospitality that made us feel home...
Read moreThis was my first time eating there. I ordered take out. I purchased a veggie plate which was 3 sides for $14. I had, greens, fried okra, and green beans. The greens and green beans had flavor but honestly not what I was expecting. Not bad just nothing that I got excited about. I'm also not a fan of the stems on the greens, but that's just my preference.
I'm not sure what I was thinking (I did want to try them though) but the okra tasted like any other fried food that I have had. The thing is fried okra isn't like eating fried potatoes , so you're better off eating them hot in the restaurant. They get cold quickly. I went back and forth trying to decide on the beans and rice or the okra. Lesson learnt for if I go back one day.
By themselves, each veggies side cost $5. I could be wrong but I think each container was maybe about 6 ozs. Basically, if you're a guy with an appetite don't order these baby sides. My only issue with the sizes of the sides and the cost was that the size made these sides premium. I eat a lot of veggies all day so my appetite wasn't satisfied. I ended up eating a huge salad. I wasn't expecting them to be so small for a veggie plate. *The 2 white bowls were my veggie side containers. The other bowls are only there for size comparison.
I also ordered 6 of their mini sweet potato cornbread muffins. Each muffin had a dollop of sweet potato. They were a nice sweet tasty bite. So much so that I ate the whole bag on my drive home.
The atmosphere was inviting. It's a nice quaint restaurant . Literally, when you walk in the door if they are busy you would have no where to stand out of the way. As soon as you walk in, abruptly to your right is a host stand to be seated. I didn't think to count how many tables, but there are not many. However, all their guests I saw the day I went in were seated comfortably enjoying their meals. I don't believe I will ever dine in though. The server/ host that took my order had awesome customer service skills. My order took about 20 min.
Michigan seems to like this restaurant. To each their own. I think I'm just looking for a tad bit more. It doesn't hurt to give them...
Read moreNot a great first experience I would give a suggestion of having a 5 to 7 minute sitting time if you are that crowded with guests know it's not customary to ask guests to leave but it's not a big space.. So put on waitlist for a table of 2 fine ppl came in with a table for 5 but only had 2 guests at the time we were there so about 20 minutes and sometimes it's ok to ask if ppl mind being at together but the kicker was having 3ppl in a party come drive down as the staff was told and they were placed on the waitlist after our group of 2 as they tell you you will be txt once the sitting is available but as we come in the group of 3 was seated as we asked the explanation was off we sit the groups according to size that doesn't sound like great customer service so as the host assured us she wouldn't do that we still could wait so of course we chose not to as we drove off 10 minutes later on the freeway we received the txt of our seating was ready. Don't think we will be going back. Oh I'm sorry and to the response I received so untrue because forbatum the gentle was placed in the list after us because we were standing at the door just to see if a table cleared before we went to our car to sit the gentle said oh we just drove in from somewhere in upper Michigan listening I do this for a living n the good hostess said ok well it maybe 45 minute wait and proceeded to put them in the waitlist after us so we got it first txt at 3:27 pm to say we are on the list and after we came in to ask what happened we went back to the car to wait and our next txt and call about our seat was 4:07pm. Please check what your doing for customers and not assume that we do not keep up with things that could be solved another way like again maybe asking this that are seating at a table for 5 if they wouldn't mind another guest that's all so thank you for...
