We decided to try Foggia's after reading so many great reviews. We've always known it was in the Zodiac club, but we were never hard-pressed to give it a whirl until recently when we couldn't decide on something different for dinner. To get into the restaurant you have to go up the stairs (or take the elevator.) The restaurant is immediately to the right. We were greeted and seated promptly. It was fairly early, so the restaurant wasn't busy. The restaurant itself is very old school and outdated. I think that's why so many people love it - the nostalgia feel. I have to admit - it was very dark in there and had an old bar smell to it, which for us, was a little unappealing. We did order a variety of food; pizza, antipasto salad, alfredo, etc. Our server was initially very prompt and friendly and made some food suggestions. The rolls brought to the table were just okay - I wish they had more of a garlic taste to it. The salad I felt was pretty bland for an antipasto. The olives were sour (old) and the lettuce was in huge chunks that could have been much smaller. No big deal - I cut it up and it was fine. But for a $15 salad, I expected to be more wowed than I was. We also ordered ranch dressing on the side and it was terrible. It was sour and tasted spoiled. You could also tell it was the kind of ranch that comes from a tub - not homemade. The pizza (a large "special") was really nothing that special. We all agreed that although the taste was okay, the crust was soggy and the pizza was "floppy." Near the middle of our dining experience our server just disappeared and an older gentleman in a white apron (who I can only assume was the cook and/or busser) came out and cleared dishes and brought our check and boxes. We never did see our server again after that. Overall, it was just a weird experience from the atmosphere to the service to the food. By the time we were getting ready to leave, the place was packed, however we couldn't help but notice all diners were much older senior citizens. It was just not a place where we felt we would want to return. I debated heavily on posting a not-so-great review because this place has SO many good ones, however I wanted to put my opinion out there. I feel that the people who love this place are local families who have grown up on Foggia's and it's likely a nostalgia thing for them, which I can appreciate. It just wasn't our cup of tea. Our family enjoys all types of pizza (Detroit Style, Round, Deep Dish, etc...) but Foggia's pizza just missed the...
Read moreI am from Wyandotte but living out of state since 1985. As a youngster, I remember the delicious pizzas my dad would bring home from the original Roma's Pizzeria on Eureka Road in Southgate for our large family. This was back in the late 60's, 70's. Still recall the brown paper covering the carry-out pizza, stapled down to the cardboard bottom--no cardboard box. To my amazement, I learned many years ago that the same, great Roma's that we enjoyed decades ago, could be found at the Zodiak Racquetball Club on Toledo in Southgate. Same family--the Foggia's--same great original Roma's quality. I always wanted to go there and check it out. Finally, while home last Saturday, a group of family members and our buddy, the one and only Rocky, went there after my nephew's afternoon basketball game. Pizza was excellent. And my tastebuds must have an outstanding memory, as I honestly recall that tasty sauce of my youth; the quality cheese that was generously laid on, but not to an extreme; the certain mild, Italian spiciness that flavored the entire pizza; and that perfect crust, crisp and golden brown on the bottom, yet still soft and chewy--not too thick, not too thin. It all just made for a pleasing, old-style, pizza pie. The one I ate was served with pepperoni, mushroom and green pepper. We also had a pepperoni pizza, a cheese pizza, and one with the aforementioned three toppings to go. All four were very good. Met the owners, Lee and his younger brother (I regret not recalling his name, but I will make a point of getting it next time I'm there), who clearly care very much about making a great pizza-- anxious to hear how we liked it--and who exude so much pride in what they do, you can feel it. Our waiter was very polite, and I am guessing he was a son to one of the owners--not sure. I should have asked. You gotta like a family-run business--at least I do. I shook their hands when I left, equally thankful for both the delicious pizza we ate and for the memories that it brought back to all of us there who recalled eating the original Roma's pizza of our...
Read moreI'm 32 years old now lived downriver 90 percent of those years drove by this place more times than I can count never heard anyone in my life comment on this place neither positive nor negative so I never had the inclination to attempt to try it.last friday had the parents in town we were all starving and wanting pizza normally when they come in I make a poi t to pick up a Frank's pizza I decided against it and said what the let's give these guys a shot after viewing their pics here on google. Pizza was on point they ha e a sweeter sauce than I'm used to other than it not being square or much reminded me of romas in a few aspects. I think where I went wrong was ordering and xl instead of med or large as it didnt look like any of the great pics that are on google it semi resembled them yes but I think it was too big decently priced for the size and 3 toppings its was enjoyed by the whole family and certainly superceded expectations. Staff, I believe I dealt with the owner super nice guy from what I could tell in our brief exchange very busy but pie was still done in a timely manner. Check it out maybe a new favorite for...
