The Hungry RoadThe Hungry Road
(Last visited 2/26/2022.) It's Saturday, nice out and we're hungry! So we shoot over to Middletown to check out one of our favorite wing spots, but to our surprise... they're closed and... for good. Saddened by this we put our heads together and make an executive decision... let's try somewhere new. So, we pull out our cellular telecommunicating Yelp devices and check the bookmarks. Boom. The Groggy Frogg in Southington. So we make our way there... here's how it went... Atmosphere/Appearance: This place is a bit of a dive and that's perfectly okay. There's no frills, nothing crazy, just good food and a good time under one roof. It's lively and an amazing bar atmosphere. There's exposed brick everywhere and plenty of places to sit outside once the weather gets warmer. Service: Sha'Nae (spelling) took excellent care of us. She was sweet, quick, energetic, laid-back and not camera shy. Lol. We appreciated her so much. Food: So I was able to try 8 different flavors of wings. They are as follows... Old Bay Garlic Butter - Deliciously crispy, savory, buttery, mildly salty and an overall grand wing. Chipotle Honey Horseradish - A creamy, smokey, mildly spicy, tangy wing that had notes of sweetness. Super delicious combination. Hot Todd-E - This wing is similar to the previously mentioned, but instead of straight honey, it's got honey mustard with a few other twists. This wing was ALSO very good. The honey mustard overshadowed the horseradish flavor, but that's okay! It was still a very grand wing. Asian Invasion - So this was our server's favorite wing, so how could we not try it out? This wing is a combination The Groggy Frogg's hot sauce and sweet chili sauce. Fantastic wing that's both sweet and spicy with a bit of Asian flare. Hollywood - So this wing is a combination of Teriyaki sauce, garlic peppercorn parmesan and red chili peppers. I'm not a big fan of Teriyaki sauce, but this wing was pretty okay! It was an odd mix of ingredients, but they did work together very well. Hot Mess Express - So this flavor is actually one that was created by the bartender so it made this even more intriguing. So this is a combination of Sriracha sauce, pesto sauce, chipotle and sweet chili. VERY, VERY great combination due to the use of chipotle as the seasoning and the other ingredients as sauces. They worked so well. Smokey, savory and the use of pesto was something I'd never seen in wings. Sweet 'N' Smokey - Pretty straightforward flavor. Smokey... and sweet. Lol. F-U - This is the hottest wing that this place offers and on the menu it tells you to "eat with caution". They mean business. A few of these other wings were hot for sure where they'd leave my lips tingling so I knew I was in for a wild ride with this flavor. The first minute or so isn't so bad, but... the heat builds and builds. Eventually it's unbearable (for most), but I could handle it. There were tears in my eyes, my body temperature rose, my lips tingled, but I could still think and live. Lol. VERY hot. I couldn't eat an entire order of these, but 1 was enough. Value: 5 wings will run you $8.25. 10 is $13.50 and it will go up from there. However, you CANNOT SPLIT FLAVORS at all. If you want to try multiple flavors, the best way to do it is to get orders of 5. It's totally worth it. In conclusion, this place is AMAZING and we hung out for like 4 hours. If you're looking for some incredible award-winning wing flavors, you need to check this place out. They also offer giant burgers and plenty of beers on tap. 4/30/23- Visit date Bar is small. The bathroom is only a 1 person bathroom which doesnt make sense if this bar gets a lot of business. The confined space would make it seem more crowded than it actually is. There is also not a lot of standing room. I had to dodge the server and a cook a few times due to the confined space. The staff needs service training. I was waiting almost 10 minutes on a not so busy evening (7-8pm) at the bar for a drink order. They poured my Guinness correctly but i waited another while for them to finish the pour. Eventually the more experienced lady asked if that was my drink and i said yes. Food is ok if prepared correctly. I had a Chipotle Honey chicken wrap and I could not finish my second half as the sauce was leaking out from everywhere. You could not hold the wrap properly. Once finished i put everything together to be courteous and my tray was left at the bar for a long while which gave a messy appearance.

7/1/22 Another great pub in Southington amongst a number of wonderful beer joints in this town. Had lunch today with my old high school chum Dave N., and he nailed it with this choice! Shane was our bartender/server that kept us refreshed and checked in on us at just the right times throughout our 2-1/2 hour stay. Dave decided on the wing special of the day called Come On! Wings. He enjoyed them enough to bring another order home to the missus! I had one of the very best steak, cheese, & mushroom wraps I can ever remember having. The cook certainly didn't skimp on the shaved steak in this baby, I'll tell you! I even ate the hand cut fries which I seldom do, they were so good. The GOBC at the Just Like Home Diner needs to watch how this combination is prepared! A great lunch with an old friend, served by a terrific young man.....couldn't be better!

We tried this place by recommendation of someone we know, and what a disappointment. The atmosphere is fine, a cool pub feel, but we got concerned when we sat down and there were fruit flies around our table and dirty barware on the window sill. The bar was 3/4 full and 1/2 the tables occupied but the service still was not good at all. Our server cared more about smoking cigarettes outside than she did tending to her tables. We ordered 4 types of wings to try a broader variety: buffalo medium, dry rub Caribbean jerk, cool ranch, and chipotle horseradish. First of all, our wings sat on the server window for at least 10 minutes, and we considered going to pick them up ourselves because our server was outside smoking - again. When she did bring them over, the flung them onto the table and walked away - she didn't say a word, not a "can I get you anything else, drink refill or anything?" Nothing - sorry for the inconvenience and for interrupting your smoking time - and each time she came in, we didn't see her wash her hands either, gross. Needless to say our wings were cold but we didn't bother sending them back when the service sucked that bad so far. The buffalo medium was Franks Red Hot, the dry rub Caribbean jerk was actually wrong and was Old Bay, the cool ranch were basically BBQ wings with crushed cool ranch doritos on them, and the chipotle horseradish barely had any flavor at all - not smoky at all, no zip from the horseradish, nothing - and they were cold. We waited for our server to come back but she was outside smoking again so we had to cash out at the bar so we could leave. Terrible service, dull cold wings, and fruit flies - go elsewhere, this...

Went here for my 21st with two of friends who also recently turned 21. It was on a monday night so we just wanted to get some drinks and catch up somewhere close. The bouncer did not believe we were of age but let us in passive aggressively after seeing our ids. The bartender was super nice and was so happy to help us celebrate. The people at the bar were also super fun and we loved the karaoke. However, the bouncer continued to hover over and watch us the entire night. One of my friends had just torn his ACL so he could not sit down and had to lean against something to stand. At one point he was standing close to the entrance of the bar and the bouncer did not like that, he did not hesitate to tell him he needs to move within seconds of him standing there. I understood so I told my friend to stand closer to me. However, when someone else stood in the same spot he did the bouncer did not say a word or even bat an eye. Multiple times throughout the night the bouncer continually would find something to say to my one friend, but just him. When other older people would do the same thing the bouncer did not say anything to them. I still had a good time and i appreciate everyone there making my night special and would love to go back, I would just hope the bouncers would be...
