You walk in and immediately you know you are in Black Bear Diner.
We were greeted by two cheerful staff, one whom I'm assuming was a manager. We visited on Friday for dinner. They offer all you can eat fish fry on Fridays, which is what attracted me to want to visit here for the first time. The fish wasn't the best, it was strips of white fish, neither were the coleslaw (tasteless) or hushpuppies (dry/hard) they serve along with it. It just leaves me to believe that seafood is not their thing. So, I know I will never order that again.
BUT! My family ordered other food items such as the pot roast, pesto pasta and chicken strips. The Pot Roast with mashed potatoes and veggies tasted like Sunday Dinner at Grandma's!! Tender, juicy and full of flavor. It was absolutely amazing!! The grilled chicken pesto pasta was very delicious! Just ask for extra pesto sauce. I would come back again just for those two dishes along!! The portion sizes are large and the prices are very reasonable.
For dessert they offer several different creme pies, bread pudding, lava cake and bear claws, among other desserts. We decided to try the bread pudding and lava cake. The lava cake with a scoop of ice cream was great! The bread pudding had a type of caramel sauce on it with pecans. The sauce was very delicious, (wish I would have asked for more of it) the bread pudding itself was good also. I would order it again.
Our waitress was very attentive and pleasant. She gave great service. The restaurant was a nice size, clean and decorated with a Black Bear...
Read moreI saw this restaurant while on I-45, and the outside decor got my attention because it reminded me of a place in Anchorage, so I was ecstatic on trying out the food. Plenty of parking, no issues. I walked in and had a nice Alaskan theme to it; nice!! The hostess tried to seat me to my table, but most of them were dirty 🤨, so it came to a point that someone came out and just decided to wipe the table down real quick. Plenty of staff on board, but saw alot of them just sitting around, one of them could of wiped all the tables down because q lot of the tables were not clean. My server was great, she made sure I was good, got me refills, and did great. I do have an issue with the Vanilla cold brew coffee; this definitely wasn't made in-house, the taste tasted of something that came out of a pre-made container. When it came to my burger, look at the photos concentrating on the fries. When fries are made, you would expect them to be fresh, and clear of any condiment stains. Well for some reason, a few of the fries had red stains on them, I looked like it was hot sauce or ketchup, and you'll see the finger print stains on the plate as well. The orange slices had mayo spots on it, even though my burger was mayo free. The burger was nothing really special, just your average American burger. I didn't bother with dessert, because I have a fewling that it woupd be frozen bought. I am surprised that the bathroom was decently clean. The place has potential, but the food might...
Read moreSo I got up on 9.11.2022 in need of some breakfast and decided to go to the Black Bear Dinner on the North Fwy. They get points for not having a long wait time, however the experience overall was very poor. The waitstaff took our order, but it took forever for the food to come from the kitchen. When we got it the order was incomplete and the toast was flat out burned. Now some people like their toast burned, I however am not one of those people. Also, there was no butter and the placeholder for jelly only had a ton of orange marmalade. We had to look at other tables for other flavors of jelly. This isn’t the first time we’ve had an experience like this at the Black Bear Dinner on the North Fwy, however I chalked it up to them being short staffed because of COVID-19, or another time just having a rough day, but I can’t keep making up excuses for poor service and SUB PAR food. The burned toast and eggs just sealed the deal for me to NOT be coming back to this place again. It’s really sad because when they first opened they were good, but now I’ll just take a sausage egg and cheese biscuit from McDonald’s instead of dealing with Black Bear Dinner. I will say that the waitstaff is friendly, but that doesn’t help when the food is BAD. (Seriously though, as a waitperson if you see a piece of toast is burned wouldn’t something in your mind say - hey this is burned I’m not taking it to my...
