I recently dined at Tokyo Diner with high hopes of enjoying an authentic and memorable Japanese culinary experience. Unfortunately, my visit was marred by the lackluster service and the complete absence of any guidance regarding the sushi menu. From the moment I walked into the restaurant, I was greeted by a disinterested and unenthusiastic staff. No warm welcome, no friendly smiles, just a sense of indifference that permeated throughout my entire meal. The most egregious part of my visit, however, was the absence of any explanation about the types of sushi they offered.
As someone who isn't well-versed in the intricacies of Japanese cuisine, I rely on the expertise of the restaurant staff to guide me through the menu. It's not unreasonable to expect the manager to take a moment to explain the different types of sushi available, especially for those unfamiliar with the vast variety of options. The menu itself was a bewildering array of Japanese names and ingredients that left me feeling lost and confused. I tried to ask for recommendations, but it was as though the manager and the servers had better things to do than educate their patrons. They provided no insight into the sushi options, didn't offer any suggestions based on my preferences, and didn't even ask if it was my first time dining there.
I ended up randomly selecting a few items from the menu, and I have to say, I was not impressed. The sushi I received lacked the freshness and quality that one expects from a Japanese restaurant. Without any guidance on the menu, I was left to make uneducated choices, resulting in a disappointing dining experience. They left me feeling frustrated and dissatisfied. While the ambiance and decor were pleasant, the lack of service and guidance when it came to the sushi menu was a significant letdown. I hope they can improve their customer service and provide a more welcoming and informative experience for future patrons, as my visit fell far short of the Japanese culinary experience I had hoped for.
Stay away from asking for help with the menu!...
Read moreThere was zero fanfare to this hibachi experience even though we told the waitress we were there for my stepson’s 18th birthday. The setting was very cold and institutional. No low lighting, no privacy areas, not much decoration, just a typical strip mall restaurant feel. It took 20 minutes for the chef to come over even though we were the only table aside from a table that was already served their meal. The Chef lacked enthusiasm and didn’t seem to take pride in his craft, nor want to be there. No smiles. No jokes. No food to catch in your mouth. He worked like a robot. The food was decent. I wouldn’t say great, because I’ve definitely had better hibachi. I only tasted the vegetables (mushrooms were delicious but the squash not so much) since I got sushi; tempura shrimp roll and spicy tuna roll. The color of the tuna was not quite what I’m used to and the texture seemed a little...different. Somewhat unpleasant. Not as though the fish was bad, but certainly didn’t taste or look fresh. The tempura shrimp wasn’t bad. Smaller shrimp than I’ve had at other places. The breading was crisp. The pickled ginger was a little lacking in flavor and a bit dry. Presentation of the sushi was not impressive. Just sushi on a white plate with some white pickled ginger and a dollop of wasabi. I also had seaweed salad which wasn’t bad. Very large portion, especially for the price. Overall it wasn’t a bad meal for the price. I’m sure if I had nothing to compare it to I wouldn’t be as critical. If you want a good, fun hibachi experience I wouldn’t rely on Tokyo Diner to provide it. If you want a great price and just okay food, this...
Read morevery disappointed today. we had a party of 40, celebrating my sons and nieces birthday. we called 2 weeks in advance to make sure they could accommodate a party that large. they said yes, we verified the time and that was the end of conversation. fast forward to today a few hours before we are to arrive. I called to make sure the reservation was all good to go..after the run around they said yes. about an hour later, I get a call from toyko diner. they asked if we could change our time from 600pm to either 500pm or 700pm because it was Chinese holiday I politely said no we could not do that as we had 40 people coming at 600 and could not get in touch with everyone. the lady said ok that's fine. we all arrive there get seated and situated (after much confusion of how many tables we would need). the place was very cold. we had several children including a newborn. the performance was not enthusiastic at all. in fact it was no show, just cooked the food and that was that. I dont think we will be going back especially with a large party that they easily made a few hundred in...
