This once was my "go to" for ribs. Someone got some bright ideas of how to improve and in my opinion I'll never go back. The ribs I had were sub par not worth the calories. My moto for rating ribs has always been, "if you need sauce you need a new pit boss!" These ribs were at the McDonald's level.
OK so I went back... I must revisit this review. They have improved exponentially. I tried the Hawaiian rib eye steak (l think that was the name they used.) I think that it was hands down the best steak I'd eaten! Might switch from my go-to rib place to my go-to steak house. Well worth the extra money.
Wouldn't you know? The last time I was there the server said they were redoing the menu and the Hawaiian Steak was discontinued! Guess they reduced their standing in my book to McDonald's level. So when I'm in Springfield I guess I'll be looking for a new place to dine. Maybe some of the management ought to take a look out their back door. Think they will find they aren't the only option in the area. Sorry Smokey thinking you got boned on these decisions.
One year later...
This is the Springfield store. I'm all about second chances. In this day I understand the inability to find good caring people. I don't know the answer for those issues.
We found ourselves in Springfield yesterday and thought we would give you a try again. I chose my go-to favorite the St Louis ribs and ordered a full rack to have leftovers. These by far were the worst you have ever served. They were like dried jerky on the edges and had the taste of long overdue leftovers. Oh yes I've tasted that taste when I have left them too long. But I never expected that while in the restaurant. Now my wife had steak medallions and said they were great. To have a signature dish be so poor I question your ability to sustain.
The sting of $100 will probably last for quite awhile. At this rate I'd be surprised to find the store open in another year
One thing that we found to be excellent was our server. Lester is the name on the receipt. This young man was one of the better waiters we have had. Definitely someone...
Read moreI was originally on the fence about taking time out to write about my experience. Went in this evening to get dinner from a local restaurant and it was significantly underwhelming. This place charges a premium, so it would be safe to assume the quality is top tier. this is not the case at all. The ribeye I ordered was an 18 ounce with the house made bourbon bbq sauce, I believe, and the mac and cheese with mashed potatoes for the sides. I have to agree with another review that the dry noodles, grocery store shredded cheese, and breadcrumbs made for a horrible mac and cheese (lacking any flavor profile at all). Secondly, with the ribeye, ordered medium, came out devoid of the glaze and dry. My wife ordered 2 smoked meats and ordered corn and sweet potato fries. The corn tasted and had the look of canned corn I ate when i was stationed in the military. When she ordered the brisket, we stated that she wanted it from the flat (dry). When her meal arrived at the table she was given primarily from the point with the fat separation. When I asked the server she said that's how we get it. I saw 0 smoke ring and the flavor is that of a liquid smoke not naturally smoked. For a place charging this much you expect significant quality. I have smoked meats personally and catered to a local business on occasion so I have some expectation from a place called "Smokey." The waitress looked lost when we asked basic questions, was somewhat robotic in the way she talked, but she did a good job and got 20% on a bill that was 95 dollars. To the credit of the kitchen staff they did cook the kids' burgers, fries, and mother in laws baked potato right. Just note that if you are wanting a premium steak or brisket there are better options an hour to hour and a half away, or learn to cook...
Read moreTook forever to get a table when there were only 2 other families eating in the restaurant. Took forever to get food. They were out of pulled chicken. When the food finally arrived, the plates were so incredibly hot that the waitress left her serving towel for us to move the plates around because they were too hot to touch (4 of those plates were for kids). My gravy was congealed to the top of the potatoes from sitting under a heat lamp for so long. The bread on the bun was so hard that it was crumbling like burnt toast. My piece of lettuce was literally rotten and I had to pull it off my sandwich. My boyfriend’s was the same on his sandwich. The macaroni and cheese was hard and the grilled cheese still had unmelted shredded cheese under the bread (yet the plate was burning hot, so I have no idea how they managed that). Then my son’s ribs were hard and didn’t fall off the bone in any way, shape or form. Maybe because it was mostly bone and hardly any meat. But the kicker was the Cole slaw. My son took one bite and literally gagged and spit it out. He’s a Cole slaw lover. When I tried it, it was 100% rancid mayo. It tasted like it should have been tossed a week ago. This might have been the worst dining out experience I have ever had. From the food to the service, it was terrible. I can’t believe they get so many good reviews! Maybe this is considered good for Springfield, but 4 out of 6 of us left hungry because we could only eat like 1/6th of our food. Gross. Avoid,...
