The Vegetarian is a mom & pop, hole in the wall totally worth visiting. The couple who own the joint are charming and lovely and lively, and they’re running their business in the way that works best for them. The food was served quickly and it was outstanding, every bite exploding with flavor. The food will be served with plastic silverware, paper plates, in takeout containers. Their focus is outstanding food, not doing dishes or fancy renovations. I hope this restaurant is around for years to come, and if I lived in the area I’d be there more often than I’m willing to admit. I can’t wait to get back as I have plans to order my way through the menu as quickly as possible. If I could cook like Ashok I would be vegetarian - his food changed my life. We ordered the taster sampler, kadahi mushroom mutter, garlic naan and masala chai.

Love the name, love the food, love the owners. I ordered the Avila (plantains, carrots, eggplant, cauliflower and other vegetables in a coconut sauce) was SPECTACULAR. I have never had this dish, but since dining here it’s been on my mind so much. Each bite was bursting with flavor. The vegetables were wonderfully tender. The portion was large as well. My husband got the Eggplant Masala (garden fresh eggplant sautéed with herbs and spices). It was excellent! Tons of flavor. I believe this was the best eggplant dish I’ve ever had! The couple running the restaurant are a hoot. They were friendly and hilarious! I had a great experience. 10/10!

So I wouldn't take this review too seriously since I didn't actually eat here. I tried to, but they weren't doing dine in (it turned out they had a small "take out only" sign on the front door). For some reason this wasn't on the Google Maps info. The door was open but we couldn't find anyone inside, and we had to holler at the kitchen to find anyone. We next tried to order take out, and they said that it would take at least 30 minutes to prepare even the simplest dish. I'm not particularly peeved and would definitely come back here. But they should probably be more organized and clear about the dine in situation.

We arrived at 5 pm (2 people on a date), just as it opened for dinner on a Saturday. We were the only customers in the restaurant at the time. The initial host/server didn't greet us and couldn't be bothered to get up from his meal. Once he did make his way over to us, we asked how he was and he appeared irritated by our presence.

After 3 attempts to find a beer that was in stock or not warm, we ended up with the pricier of the imported beers. Using the sticky menus we placed our order with another server.

When the food was served, we received only part of what we thought we had ordered (a plain dosa) but after later seeing the check we discovered that it actually was a different more expensive dosa. I will give them credit for the dosa and the sauce being very tasty. However, we had also ordered the Paneer Pakora appetizer to go with it, but that didn't arrive since the server had forgotten about it. We reminded him about it and he put the rest of our order in, with it eventually arriving as we were almost done with the other food. This particular dish was truly terrible, hard, rubbery, similar to a deep fried flip flop. He never returned to check on us or refill beverages, so we just wanted to get out of there at that point.

The check took forever to arrive and when it did, we put our cards in the payment sleeve to pay right away. Again, no one came back to take the payment although the table seated next to us was getting full service and either of the servers could've easily grabbed it. When we finally got tired of waiting to pay and brought the payment up to the first server/host, he was unapologetic and made us feel stupid for not just bringing it up to him sooner.

We had high hopes for this place. its unfortunate that the very poor service and food left us not wanting to return in addition to leaving us with...

Very odd experience at this place... i came here with two other people, around 5 pm when the restaurant had just opened. There were two other tables seated when we walked in, and the restaurant was a little hole in the wall with home like scenery and good smells. Once we sat down, we waited 20 minutes until the waiter came over and took our order. We kept seeing dishes come out and given to people who had come after us.. we were very confused, but had just assumed our food would come out shortly. It didnt until about 30 minutes later, an hour since we had gotten there. We only got one person's food, and again we thought the rest would just come out shortly. But it never came. And thus we asked the waiter where it was. Instead of just getting an answer, the waiter expressed how everyone came in at once (three tables) and there was just too much for him to handle, he then repeatedly and aggressively asked us what we wanted (our food), and then said that we can just leave.. after that the cook came over and finally gave us our food, and apologized and was very nice and polite. The cook is a very nice guy, and overall the food is good. I had liked the place previously for all the vegan options, but that waiter had really just ruined the mood.. all in all if you were to come here, i would recommend just calling and picking up to avoid the...

I would like to give The Vegetarian five stars, but there were just a couple of things precluding that from happening. The ambiance could have been a lot better, and they could have kept the door to the kitchen closed so customers didn't have to look at it and primarily so all the kitchen smells didn't emanate out into the dining area. We had just put on fresh clothes and had to go home and changed the minute we left. (Read about the garlic naan later in the review.)

All the negative points made, the good part was the food. I'm certainly not a vegetarian or vegan, but I do know and love Indian food. Being vegetarian dishes and not something we were used to, our entrees were awesome! I had Dumm Aloo, which is potatoes cooked with rich herbs in a spicy tomato sauce and my wife had Eggplant Masala, fresh eggplant sauteed with potatoes, herbs and spices. At least she had the common sense to order her's "mild spicy". I went for "medium spicy" and I'm still suffering as I write this review!

The meals came with a very good Basmati rice and we ordered a garlic naan, the latter being another reason The Vegetarian didn't get five stars. The naan was VERY dry, and everywhere we've ever eaten naan it was brushed with an oil and the bread was soft. But that said, it...
