To start, the neighborhood feels a bit sketchy. I made sure not to leave anything valuable in my car and double-checked that it was locked. As for the food—small portions, big prices. You and your wallet will both walk out lighter. The food had a burnt taste, and my wife actually felt sick afterward from how overpowering it was. The pricing structure here makes other overpriced restaurants seem reasonable. Everything costs extra—even rice, beans, and chips, which are typically included at most similar places. What really raised red flags was the sales tax. My total bill came to $35.50, but the sales tax charged was $4.50—putting the rate at about 12.68%. The tax rate wasn’t printed on the receipt, and it seemed a little too convenient that the total rounded off to exactly $40. When I asked about the tax rate, the server quickly passed me off to what seemed like either the owner or a manager. They told me the tax was “something like 12.5%,” and then proceeded to condescend, saying it was my fault for not understanding how taxes work. Rather than escalate the situation, I paid the bill and left. Later, I looked up the actual sales tax for restaurants in St. Louis. The combined state and local rate is 9.68% (Missouri state sales tax 4.23% and St. Louis city local sales tax 5.45%), and there's an additional 1.5% dine-in fee, bringing the total to 11.18%. To confirm, I visited a nearby business—Clementine’s—and their receipt clearly listed an 11.179% sales tax. So yes, they overcharged me by $0.31. It’s not about the amount—it’s about the principle. I won’t support a business that lacks transparency and integrity. And yes, I’ll be filing a report with the Missouri Consumer Protection Agency for misrepresenting their sales tax.

My wife and I were in search of some Latino dishes and went to Don Carlos on Cherokee only to find out that they were closed on Jan 28 & 29, 2023. Their Google profile said that they opened at 10:00 am however, when we got there that wasn't the case, so we were VERY disappointed. I LOVE visiting small businesses because I am a small business owner myself and feel they have the best experiences. So my wife and I had to regroup and find a new restaurant to try that would give us what we were looking for. She remembered that there was a restaurant that she had been wanting to try and have been watching for a few months now, that is Latino cuisine. So we went. Listen people, this is an experience you have to have! The restaurant is right on the corner of McNair in the heart of Benton Park and the staff is warm, welcoming and tons of fun. They weren't weird or awkward explaining the menu and really gave us a complete, perfect experience. We ordered the chips and queso, Black bean nachos, hush puppy jalapenos, and the shrimp and steak fajitas. The food & flavors are so unique while also remaining in the authenticity of Latin generational dishes. EVERYTHING was amazing! The atmosphere, the food and the family feel you get dining in this place is stellar. They are a diamond in the rough. Visit, visit, visit and have some of their signature drinks while you're there that are just as amazing as the dishes. I'm so happy that this place, was the place where we got exactly what we didn't know we were wanting and more!

I have been to Arzola’s twice now and I am utterly hooked! To begin with I have never liked margaritas, but my husband ordered one that I tried a sip of. Amazing, I immediately ordered one of my own! Fresh squeezed fruit and high end tequila make all the difference in the world. Next the salsa and queso were fantastic. Salsa was a little sweet on the front end and spicy on the back. Quest was a little spicy and extremely flavorful. Fajitas were wonderfully different without the slimy peppers and onions that often are incorporated with the meat. We ordered the steak fajitas and they came as a kit with everything separate to build your own. The steak was incredible and we were told it is held in a long marinade. The second time we also tried the nachos, which are individually laid out nachos with some incredible green sauce underneath the cheese, etc. On top of the wonderful food the atmosphere was very warm and friendly. It is a beautiful cozy space inside and a nicely built in patio in the back. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and the owner stopped to personally check on our table, as well as all the others over the course of our visit. If you are considering Arzola's, don’t hesitate, for us it was five stars on all levels twice now.

I’ve been here three times now and always order the fajitas. I love the atmosphere and always receive great service. This last time I had Mia maybe Mya as our server, I’m not 100% sure the name is right but she was around 5 ft short brown hair and friendly smile and demeanor. She was very attentive and offered many suggestions and ways to improve our meal. The fajitas are a hit every time and the only really reason I go here. I do not mean for this to be a bad review because I always have a great meal here but I personally prefer to eat at local spots that are cost friendly but I’m sure because of the location they cater to their clientele with higher financial means that don’t mind paying for things like chips and salsa that usually come complimentary at most Latin American restaurants. Even a side of salsa for the fajitas is additional cost. They also do not provide rice and beans with the fajitas I’m not sure about the rest of the dishes. Mexican food is not that expensive to make as I am Mexican and grew up buying and making similar dishes. I will say their fajita meat is lean and very well made and you can tell it is a better quality than their competitors but the rice and beans are still the same cost so maybe they’re making up for the cost of the meat with that additional cost for the sides. The fajitas are about $29 for one person vs $53 for two and honestly I feel that the serving portion for one is significantly less than the average single order at even a nicer location in Texas, which is where I was born and raised. My advice is to order the double if you’re two people as the portion is more suitable than the individual. I shared a double with someone and left full but when I ate a single by myself I left hungry. The same for the margaritas if you only want one and are considering two just go for the pitcher because it’s the better deal. The margaritas are very tasty and you can tell there is tequila but for the price it wasn’t the best I had and I didn’t think the price matched the quality. I will continue to go in the future if I’m invited but I wouldn’t seek this place out as there is more authentic Mexican food with just as good fajitas but I appreciate the service I am given each time and the nice experience. Also they only have one bathroom for all genders to share so make sure you aren’t needing the facilities when you arrive cause I had to wait 10 minutes for the restroom and it was the same person in the whole time so that was very inconvenient while...

Customer service was good! Only thing I didn’t like was some of the food descriptions. The nachos are not typical. Instead of the customary chips on a plate with the toppings spread all over, here I had FIVE chips with toppings on each individual chip. 🤦🏾‍♀️

REVIEW UPDATE 5/23/23 One thing that I truly do not like as a customer who gives her OWN PERSONAL review is to be made a mockery of in a response from whomever does the company's social media tasks. the point of reviews is for a paying customer to give his/her OWN PERSONAL account of what they experienced. Whether it was a good experience or a bad one, it is just that, A PERSONAL ONE. So for whomever was the respondent to my review to 'belittle' or 'snapback' at my review was out of order. It is amazing how when I look at other reviews of THIS restaurant that were less than the 5 stars that always anticipate, it was responded back with an apology and an offer to have a better experience if the customer tries this restaurant again. The worst part about this is that I never said anything rude, untrue (in MY opinion) about the restaurant. I even gave kudos to the customer service, which is always vital! Instead, because I did not give you all the 5 stars you wanted, you respond with 'under tone' comments! No restaurant wants less than a 5 star rating, however, I am sure that no restaurant will ever always get a 5 star review from every customer! Initially I had given 3 stars now I have decreased it to 1 ... BECAUSE YOU (whomever responded) MADE IT PERSONAL!

(¡Hola Charice! Thanks for taking a moment to provide your feedback. While a pile of chips on a plate may be customary to you, what’s customary to our incredible guests is delicious food crafted with high-quality ingredients and an attention to detail. And, our nachos - appropriately described as layered tostadas rather than “mounds of chips” - are served in an order of 6, not an order of 5… so, we can’t help but wonder if you intended to give us a “4” rating instead of a “3”? We understand that our restaurant may not be for everyone, and thank you again for your visit...

Went here for a date night with the wife. The food was good, the servers friendly, and the atmosphere solid, but the price gouging is so bad I can't give the place more than 2 stars. I definitely "disliked" my experience.

My wife and I ordered a margarita and I had diet soda, we had chips and salsa and split the steak/chicken fajita combo for 2 and it was $100. Yes, $100. The chips and salsa were not free, the rice and beans were not included with the meal (even though they charge $60 for said fajita meal - almost twice what any other stl restaurant charges). Then it turns out they charge for each refill, so $12 on soda (why would you not have fountain soda, I don't need to pay $9 upcharge to drink from bottles). The icing on the cake was that although we got half chicken half steak, we were not charged the difference between the two ((42+60)/2) but rather the full $60. I'm sure many people like my wife and I order half chicken combos to be more economic.

I understand the fajitas are marinated for 72 hours and the food is clearly a step above most other mexican restaurants, but they have such a horrid pricing model I cannot possibly recommend this place. $60 for fajitas might be acceptable if you at least give me chips and salsa and some rice and beans, but you can't hit me for $3-5 at every single point of the dining experience.

You can go to Tres Reyes in Des Peres and have the same meal for $60, or $45-50 at El Burro Loco or any of the other good local joints. This place is absolutely not twice as good as every other Mexican restaurant in the city and its in a not so great part of town, so please pass. And I hate to say it because I was a huge fan of the owners last Mexican restaurant (that was 1/2 the price of...
