The atmosphere is what drew us in to give Calypso a try. The open feel of the covered patio flanked with flickering street lamps really fits in with soulard and felt very welcoming. The list of spirits is pretty large and there’s easily something for everyone. Pours are 2oz. so you’re getting enough if you’re having some bourbon or rye. The cocktails are great and I highly recommend trying the “I’m older & have more insurance” made with tomato gin, empress gin, basil simple syrup, lemon juice and citric acid for a tart finish. It tasted amazing and the presentation was simple and refined. I also ordered a gin fizz with moletto gin as a custom order and the bartender did an amazing job. They even garnished it with a little sliced tomato on a skewer and tomato juice art around the foam on top kind of like a latte. The food was also great. We had the bread & butters, as well as a Calypso salad to split. It was easily enough to share and provided a lot of different flavors. The bread & butters comes with marble rye, focaccia, and baguette slices served with two butter spreads (savory and sweet) pickled veggies and a sweet pepper jelly. The salad has dried banana chips, apricot pieces, and fresh pineapple wedges tossed with walnuts and romaine. We finished the night with a dessert of Hummingbird cake. It was served in a square cast iron skillet and was very decadent. The cake was skillfully spiced and baked to a fluffy consistency, and the cream cheese icing was very rich. It’s best shared with fiends, as it’s a lot of sugar. Overall we really enjoyed our time at Calypso and we highly encourage you to check it out if you’re visiting Soulard.

There is an amazing Halloween Popup at Calypso called “Spirits of the Bayou” and it’s an absolute treat! The atmosphere was spooky and festive, with incredible decorations for an immersive experience. The highlight for me was the skeleton fish, which were not only creative but also #stlouispescatarianapproved! Let’s get those tarot cards read. What a fun addition! As for the drinks, they were as creative as they were delicious. My personal favorite was the Grim Reaper Margarita. On the food side, everything we tried was excellent. The brains and blood Mac n Cheese bites were creamy on the Janice, creamy in the inside, while the bayou shadow dip had just the right amount of spice and richness. The paranormal pasta rounded out the meal with its unique flavors. The names 🤣 Add this to the list before it’s too late.

The place is nice. It's a vibe with light music playing. We did ask to turn the TV on for Sunday football. It was a little small by the bar but still was fine. I ordered a lemonade and it did taste like lemon water. Not sure if it was an off day or not but I don't recommend it. We did change our drinks to fountain drinks and she did charge us for that. She charged everyone for two drinks. We had Tito's and lemonade as well and sent them back because they taste like water and Tito's. The glass was was dirty with stuff in the inside of it. Our food came out kinda cold like it wasn't under the warmer I guess. The wings and fries were the only thing hot and Delicious 😋. I would go back it may have been an off day but willing to give them a chance.

My party(of 7) arrived at 12:15pm. The establishment is very small and only has 2 tables that could seat a party our size. One of the larger tables had 3 adults and 1 infant child. We were told that was the table we would be seated at and it would be available in 30-45 minutes so we decided to wait. After an hour one of our guest went to check on the table and was advised the family was almost done so we continued to wait. The party that was at the table was done eating and we’re just sitting there talking. After 2 hours and 5 minutes of waiting we were seated but told the kitchen would be closing at 3. At this point it’s 2:20pm. After sitting for 10 minutes a nice young man named Brandon asked if we wanted water after realizing our server hadn’t given us any water. The manager Courtney never came and checked in knowing what was going on leading up to this point. All of the women servers walked around with an attitude and wasn’t any help at all. They charged $2 for a side of ketchup for the potatoes one of our guests asked for. They add an automatic gratuity to a party of 6 or more just fyi. Upon leaving I pulled the manager to the side and told her if she is aware that there’s an issue going on she should make her presence known and should probably check in to make sure her guest are okay. I also suggested with the establishment being so small they may want to put a time limit on each table to keep guest from just sitting around talking holding up tables. As we were leaving a couple of my guest stated the worker were trying to fight them. They were upset about the guest complaining so I got out the car ask if they wanted to fight. 2 of the workers walked inside and the other proceeded to stand in the door way as if she couldn’t hear me so I walked to the door to see what was going on. As I was talking to her trying to figure out what happened and was asking if they were trying to fight our guest one of the workers waved her hand at me saying just leave. I told her she could come outside if she had a problem with them. The manager finally came to the door and I advised her of what took place. She then informed me 2 of the workers one being the girl that waved me off were 16 and 17. At that point these are children and I have nothing else to say to them. I continued to tell the manager what happened and to make sure everything was okay because I had just talked to her prior to leaving. The other child worker then said so you’re going to fight some kids. I told her I didn’t know you all were kids until the manager just said that and I was simply coming to see what happened between them and my other guest. These kids these days are different with bad attitudes and don’t know how to work in a stressful environment. Don’t start mess with grown women then holler I’m a kid once you’ve pissed them off. Overall the food was absolutely amazing, Brandon (who became our server) was amazing, Courtney the manager needs better managing skills, and the kid servers don’t belong in a restaurant like this. The establishment is nice just really small. I wouldn’t recommend a party bigger than 4 going here. I would recommend ordering to go if...

This place has an amazing atmosphere and could 100% be an amazing spot for everyone, but whomever is running the place needs a lot of work. We had a server on the patio 9/15/2024 around 8pm and I’m not going to say their name, but they were nonexistent. When we walked in, the whole staff was sitting at the bar talking to who I assumed was the bartender. The supposed bartender told us happily to sit anywhere and was friendly. We sat down in the patio and got menus within 5 minutes and then sat for another 15 minutes waiting for the server to come back, we saw her walk by and then sit down at the fire pit to look at her tips and then walk and sit down at the end of the patio to talk to another coworker. We waited another 5-6 minutes for her to finally approach us (total of 20+ minutes) and said “sorry that was so long” -when obviously we saw her sitting around not doing anything blatantly seeing us ready to order and looking around for her... She seemed high but i don’t know but she wasn’t coherent when speaking or serving. We waited 10 minutes for our drinks which were not good at all, and then 30 minutes for our food which was not good, too. There was no flavor to the fish tacos, the bell peppers were all cut unevenly, the cilantro was scattered and cut terribly and the fish were terribly portioned. For $18 there should be more in the taco and a side- it was not worth the money at all. If it was flavorful, full of toppings, and included a side, maybe, but that should not be sold as $18. Definitely more of a sad appetizer. I got the “jumbo” wings and fries, worst $20 I have spent on food in a long time. I asked for two sauces, never got those and the fries were soggy and lackluster- nothing at all special about them- again not worth $20. We also had another sweet male server approach us and ask if we ordered food and then proceeded to bring us our food kindly and asked if we needed anything else and brought us water- our server never in sight or EVER checking on us- not using the main points of serving at all. Our original server walked past us, sat around and was a joking around and screaming and laughing inside and outside the patio. Further complaining that she was “tired” and I know it wasn’t from working there because she didn’t do a thing so I don’t know where she was getting tired from. While we sat there with and without food we saw servers sitting around, leaning on the railings drinking their waters just talking, no one actually working while we sat there for 15 minutes at the beginning, waiting to put our order in. And then again when we were unsatisfied with our drinks and food, no one checked on us to see how we were doing. I told the server I did not like the drink at the end of the meal and she picked it up clumsily and spilled it on me and then giggled- obviously not taking it off the check or asking if I’d want a different drink because that would require proper training and education. I wish I never came here and wasted $35+ on the crappy service, food and drinks- I should’ve listened to the warnings I had received at my job as a bartender. Where I’d never treat...

I would give a 0 star if possible. We went to Calypso on 11/2 for my sister’s birthday. My sister made a reservation at 11am for the group. We arrived on time and were told we had to wait while they “set up”. We were the first customers in the restaurant and it took 20 minutes to be seated while they pushed together 4 tables. Our waitress was clearly new and hadn’t finished training but was thrown into our large party by herself. While she was kind, she did not know the menu and was not familiar with the systems. It took us almost another 30 minutes to get drinks. My coffee was cold and the juices and alcoholic beverages were watered down by the ice. After almost an hour we were able to put in our food orders. Putting in orders took forever because they had passed different versions of the menus. . The waitress had to come back often to change orders because the restaurant was out of ingredients. Almost 2 hours after arriving we received our food. The food was decent. Some of our orders were wrong. But at this point we were starving. We asked for our checks, which of course was a mess, and took another 30 minutes.

There couldn’t possibly have been a manager on duty at this point, and if there was they should be disappointed in the restaurants service.

In addition there was a second waitress there who was handling the only inside tables. Keep in mind the inside was empty upon arrival and she still failed to help our new waitress. When she did come over she was incredibly unprofessional, using profanity and was just kind of rude. When my husband stepped inside to try to pay at the bar because we needed to leave he saw this waitress having drinks inside instead of helping our waitress out. This is one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in STL and will advise friends to avoid this place...
