When a menu speaks to you, you order the whole thing. And that's what we did at Stew's (or at least 70% of it).
Stew's is a new Asian-inspired restaurant in Soulard that inhabits the old Wood Shack location (next to Chava's). Since the area was in desperate need of Asian food, my friends and I were intrigued to visit. Upon entry, you are welcomed by the friendliest owner and his staff. The place is small and dimly lit with neon signs, providing an intimate, vibrant vibe - very good for a date or small group. With a group of 5 on a Friday night, it proved challenging to fit us in immediately, but the owner and his staff assured us they would make space and eventually got us all seated.
Once seated, the menu called to us - EVERYTHING sounded delicious. Where else in STL can you be at a restaurant/bar that serves Khao Soi (Thai Curry Noodle Soup) while pounding a Hamm's beer or Lychee Gimlet? So as one does, we ordered almost everything: The T-Pockets, Brussels, Edamame "Hummus", Pork & Shrimp Shumai, Fried Rice, Pork Burger, all three Popcorn Chicken dishes, and the Khao Soi. The food did take a while as the kitchen was slammed. But once the food came out, the flavors were presented at full force. The most notable apps/entrees were the Brussels, the Popcorn Chicken paired with the fried rice, and the T-Pockets. Each playing the salty, sweet, and umami flavors by intertwining them well. The only misses (which is truly being knit picky) I could say were that the Shumai sauce was a little under seasoned, as was the Khao Soi broth. But to have two complex dishes like those to serve still left me impressed.
All I can say is, Stew's with its intricate, diverse Asian-inspired dishes, warm staff, and unique cocktails makes it a welcome...
Read moreAmazing food and drinks and ownership and staff. Love chatting with Nate when we went in and getting to talk cocktails and getting some amazingly delicious things made specifically for us. Staff is all incredibly helpful and kind with great service. Food and drinks are off the charts. Everything is incredibly reasonably well priced. I didn't see anything above $15 on the menu, even with their cocktails which is always a huge plus. Their industry discount is also very nice for somebody who doesn't have a ton of money to spend. It'll always be busy when you go during peak hours, but I never saw anybody waiting very long. They have a decent turnaround time and a really large outdoor seating area with minimal indoor space. If you like dive bar vibes where it's a bit noisy with dim red lighting then like sit inside (or if you just want to chat with your bartende , which will always be a great choice here!) Sitting outside feels a bit more like casual dining versus going to a bar, which is nice to have a range of experience available to choose from. I literally love this place and have been three times in a week. I think I want to live here if I can. Is it okay with ownership if I just kind of...
Read moreTHIS PLACE IS SO DELECTABLE & SATISFYING in the most important ways to me when I eat out: It is a just- Be-YoSELF type place that celebrates the personality/flavors that naturally happen in life, but they put it together like the finest ass curators and creators... LIKE bringing the CRISP, SAVORY, SUPER CREAMY REAL CRAB RANGOONS together like a dream... Or the perfectly thick curly ramen noodles in a divinely flavored coconut curry.... Or the crispy, JUICY skewers of Pork Belly, another of Shitakes, another of Beef... Or the brussel sprouts fried, juicy flavorful and crispy, w added rice crispies that add that extra delectableness of crunch... My Grasshopper was oh so GOOD also🎉 Don't sleep on this!! It is small and very popular... Can't wait to enjoy it on good weather days when we can sit on the patio! The service was so prompt, considerate, fun and friendly.... Don't sleep on STEW'S... SO DELICIOUS, fun and they made me feel like a well...
