I eat here pretty often as it's a cut above fast food crap but I do feel it's simply not ran as a tight of a ship anymore. Painful for me to say as a very long time customer. When I was younger, another lady, mid 30's or so (guessing the mom or of some relation to some of the current employees) seemed to be the management, very hands-on. Everything, even though simple - was consistent, very clean, very polite staff, less hipsters. ;)
Now it seems a little more like Mom has left the building because the food is often a hit & miss (still better than fast food chains but I digress). Undercooked veggies, giant chunks of chicken, some quite fatty. Steak burnt to rubber. Pork that you can chew on for a year. Why 4 stars then?
It's not always like that! When someone obviously put some effort into my food - I get not only solid (still, very simple "Japanese") food but a hint of nostalgic-goodness. I know I emphasize "simple" and hey, it's N.C. I get it. Most haven't even mastered English here and it's native. Keep it simple. Very smart. But they need some quality control. Whoever is manager(s) is likely young, if I had to guess. Whomever he/she/they are should really watch them box these things before going out. They get busy, rush and burn meat too often. Pro Tip: Don't send out crap just because the customers are waiting and seem impatient. People would rather wait for better quality in the end whether they know it at the time or not. Keep broccoli on grill a little longer too, plzkthx. It's borderline raw too many times these days.
This may have sounded rough but I really have been eating at this place off and on since the old days. Still a favorite establishment around here. Probably my favorite. Just needs some tweaking before I could ever give it a 5 again. 4 may even be a bit nostalgic if you end up with half-burned chicken that you will have to cut the bottom off of to chew. Depends on who is manning the grill I noticed. One guy tends to actually cook as if he gives a crap and you'll likely be impressed.

Read moreCame here for dinner tonight with my little brother. I wasn’t expecting much to begin with but it really fell short. First no one greeted us for seating. By the time the waiter finally got to the table he was sweaty and pale and his cheeks were red. He took our drink order and finally came back 15 minutes later. I ordered sweet tea and a glass of plum wine. My brother got a pepsi. I asked this young man if he was ok because he looked winded. He said no I feel sick like I have to throw up. I said well can I please have another waiter because I can’t afford to get sick. He seemed upset and asked for someone else to take our table. When the girl came over she seemed upset about the change. I explained the situation to her and tried to explain my decision. After ordering the girl didn’t come back to fill our drinks or ask us how things were. I had to flag another waitress down to bring a go box. I felt like the best part of the whole dinning experience was the glass of wine. The rice was hard and the hibachi was burned, the carrots were cold. I just wasn’t happy at all but because I’m not a total jerk I left the girl a 5$ tip which was well over 20%. Oh and when I explained this all to the girl who checked out our ticket she just said oh so sorry! You have good day. Needless to say I won’t be...
