The Pickle Barrel — Restaurant in Stratford

It pains me to review the Pickle Barrel so poorly. It’s a great little small town sandwich shop with plenty of options for everyone. I need to first say that I have ZERO issue with the staff or the food. The food is always delicious. The staff is always very friendly and welcoming. My issue is with their procedures. I always order through their app. As I have very limited time to eat both breakfast and lunch, I order ahead and schedule a good pick up time. That being said, I have never been able to just walk in, give my name and walk out. My order is either never ready, even when I place it 30-45 minutes ahead of time, or it is ready but instead of just giving it to me (paid for ahead of time also) it’s placed in line behind others who still have to pay. Apparently they have a pick up counter but only if you know it’s there. Otherwise I too often stand there waiting for someone to ask if I’m all set. On one occasion some coworkers and I placed a an order of about 5 items. When my coworker went to pick up they told her they had lost the ticket and only one sandwich was made. They had to reprint the ticket and finish the order. On another occasion, I placed an order at 6:30am, as I was leaving home, set a pick up time for 7am. Upon arriving (at 7:03) I was quickly asked if I was picking up, but when I gave my name and said it was an online order the lady working the register went to their ticket printer and pulled off what had to be about a dozen orders. Having worked in a similar environment I understand that sometimes orders get backed up and this lady, for what it’s worth, was working the register and front counter alone, so I understand it’s difficult to keep up with things. But that’s where poor management is responsible. Another issue with this particular order, I had ordered a bagel as well which I only later realized wasn’t given to me. Pickle Barrel Deli is a fun, unique deli in Stratford, CT conveniently located on Main Street.

They offer a daily selection of hot food including some sort of pasta, grilled chicken, rice or potatoes and a delicious, fresh made Turkey breast. Of all those options the Turkey is the best. However their signature sandwiches are where this place shines.

Sure, you can get your usual deli favorites; rueben, roast beef, BLT, Italian Combo etc, but by far the standouts are the unique specialt options such as; American Combo, The Rachel, Beef Eater, Steve Special, and the Gobbler(Thanksgiving dinner in a wrap)

The best and worst part of this deli are the staff. Though extremely friendly the service is extremely slow. I don't think it is without hard work but maybe their system is just a mess. I ordered ahead 10 times in a row. I arrived 15 mins later each time between 11:15 and 12. I waited an average of an extra 17 minutes each time.

The wait I dont understand. Busy or not there is an army of awesomely friendly and conversational employees busting their butt.
