I had the pleasure of checking out Osuma Suya located in Houston, TX. I went two days in a row because my experience was THAT GOOD.
Day 1: the experience I had at Osuma Suya was 10/10. As someone who came in from out of state, the store location was very easy to find. I did not have issues with parking as there was enough parking in the lot. Once I walked in, I was greeted by the wonderful young lady at the cashier. While greeting her, I scanned around and noticed how neat and clean the environment was. Not only that, the ambiance was AMAZING. The vibrant colors, stylish paintings, and upbeat music really created an atmosphere I just fell in love with. A few moments later, the owner came out to greet me and decided to assist me with my order. The owner, Monalysa, was very welcoming and her smile made me very comfortable in that space. She took her time to go over the menu with me and gave me her recommendations. She also gave me samples to eat while deciding on what I wanted! I was so shocked and impressed because I have not been to an African restaurant before where they give out samples. That alone was such a great and kind gesture that made me feel even more relaxed in that space. After going through the menu, I decided to order the suya tacos, jollof rice, beef suya, and Chapman drink. I sat down and waited for my food to be made. I loved how my order was made fresh to order . I didn’t mind waiting for some time because I knew my food was going to be hot and fresh.
GUYS! I honestly don’t even know where to start with describing how this food tasted. The beef suya was superb! It was flavorful, juicy, and well cooked! I have never tasted suya like that in America. Never! It’s something that you just want to keep eating more of. The jollof rice was out of this world. The jollof rice made for me was what I like to call real “party jollof” rice. The taste was amazing and I did not even know when I finished my plate. The suya taco stole the show for me. When I took a bite into the suya taco, I was just paused. I was trying to bring myself back because it was taking me to another dimension LOL! Oh my goodness! I have never had such a combination of flavors in my mouth before that blended so well and beautifully together. My goodness-the suya tacos were #1 for me-hands down. My Chapman drink was so refreshing! I’ve had Chapman before but after tasting this particular Chapman, this was now listed as the best Chapman I’ve ever had till date.
After having such a wonderful experience, I told the owner that I would like to put in an order for me to come back the next day and pick it up. I wanted to take some food back to the West Coast with me. The owner told me that it wouldn’t be a problem. She took my order for the next day and told me that they will pack it specially for travel. Also, the owner promised me that she will do her best to make sure that whatever I want to order and travel with will be ready on time. I put in my order with her and also let her know what time I will come the next day to pick it up. She told me that she would handle it for me personally.
Day 2: Before going to the airport, I stopped by Osuma Suya to pick up the order I was going to be traveling with. Upon walking in, I was greeted nicely by the lady working at the register who remembered me from the day before. She told me that my order will be ready in a few minutes-that they are rounding up. I was then served with more samples! Just like the day before. Before you knew it, my order was ready for me. The owner then came out again to greet me and personally handled over my order. It was so refreshing to have a pleasant interaction with the owner. She really made me feel comfortable in that space and made me want to come back. I then left and by the time I reached my destination, my order was still in tact, the temperature was still good, and the food tasted amazing.
The experience, quality, & taste of Osuma Suya Houston was 10/10. I truly enjoyed my experience there. Anytime I am in town, I must make out time to stop by and...
Read moreI’ve tried several Suya spots in Houston, Texas, but none have matched the taste and quality of Osuma Suya. The Suya beef here is simply the best I’ve ever had. The beef is seasoned to perfection and cut into bite-sized pieces, making it easy to snack on during the drive home—because let’s be honest, it’s nearly impossible to wait until you’re home to dig in!
Before Osuma Suya opened, I was on the hunt for delicious, authentic beef Suya and couldn’t find anything that hit the mark. Now, I willingly drive 25 miles just to get my hands on their Suya, and it’s always worth the trip. The Suya spice, which I’m sure is imported directly from Nigeria, delivers an authentic flavor that’s hard to beat. If you’re not into too much spice, just let the person at the register know, and they will assist you with ordering the perfect menu items—they’re very accommodating.
The atmosphere at Osuma Suya is vibrant, with great music that adds to the experience. If you’re in the Houston area, this place is a must-try. Don’t be fooled by the packaging—the portions may look modest, but there’s always more than enough, so much that I have leftovers for the next day. With the leftovers, I personally like to repurpose them into new dishes at home, making the experience even more enjoyable. The texture of their jollof rice is also fantastic, with a nice bite to it, unlike some other places where the rice ends up over-hydrated.
While some might find the prices a bit steep, the authentic flavors and portion sizes make it worth every penny. They offer menu items ranging from $5 and up, so there’s something for everyone, even if you’re on a budget.
Just like with any cuisine, taste is subjective. But in my opinion, this has been the best Suya beef I’ve ever tasted. Maybe when I visit Nigeria for the first time, my thoughts might change, but for now, this is the best I’ve ever had.
My go to order is Suya Beef and Jollof Rice. As you can see below, my portion sizes, this was from 1 order of each dish. Like I said, there’s always more than enough and I always have leftovers to enjoy the next day. Don’t let that to-go...
