Here's my thoughts...
Just three stars. ⭐⭐⭐. But with the understanding that we probably would return, the food and service could stand to be a little better.
We had a party of six and visited in Sunday October 10. We impressively were greeted by all the bar staff as soon as we entered. Very friendly, told to seat ourselves, very warm and friendly. The waitress was also very friendly, but the service was a tad slow. Drinks needed refills, seemed it took forever from the time our drinks came, to the time she eventually took our order.
We ordered appetizers. The nachos and the German JoJo's. The cheese dip on the nachos was over the top good. And those German JoJo's were amazing! What you would expect from a restaurant that clearly gets most of their business from the bar. Everyone that had the German JoJo's raved about them. Very impressive.
We each ordered something different for our meals. My son ordered a French dip sandwich and loved it. My son-in-law got the PB&J burger. He thought it was an incredible combination of flavors. I tried it, and not a peanut butter fan; but the burger was really good and the jalapeno jelly really added a unique twist to the beef. Impressive. I ordered their what I think was a Cajun onion soup. A remarkable soup, warmed with what I assume was chili powder; and ultimately one of the best soups I've had in quite some time. I wish however, they cut the onions down to fit the smaller soup spoons the served it with...
The not so good. I ordered the fried chicken and biscuits. It was covered with a white pepper gravy. The chicken was way too salty, and I found myself having to take a sip of my drink with every bite. Mind you (even though I didn't), I usually salt my food before I eat it. Thank God I didn't this time. My lips dried up more with each bite. I'm assuming they let the chicken soak in salt water before frying, and they way over did it. And being from the south, don't be stingy on the gravy! Two pieces of chicken in two biscuits. Maybe a 1/4 cup in gravy on them both. Triple that! Perhaps the extra gravy would have overrode the string salt taste, but I'll never know.
My wife was disappointed in her Philly cheese steak. She said after one bite the flavor of the added pepper was overwhelming.
Here's my thoughts on the negativity. This place was good and friendly. But they're primarily a bar. If we had been there later in the evening and drinking heavily, the stronger seasonings would probably suit most patrons that are more intoxicated.
I really look forward to my next trip to Summerville and hopefully revisit this restaurant. The majority of the food was great, but two meals out of six were disappointing. Normally that's enough to make me not want to return, but what we did like, we loved. We just have to be more selective and ask more questions.
Do I recommend Dog and Duck? Yes. I hope to return in a few weeks to visit my daughter and her husband and try something else here. Hopefully ordering something else could allow me to change my ratings...
Read moreIt’s usually one of the Sunday brunch/lunch choices, so this is only for Sunday early PM experiences.
(If y’all are new the area, being that 9:10 ppl aren’t from here, this place is worth stopping in for food & drink)
Normally’s all good! The food is usually good enough to keep going back with traditional “healthy size” southern portions and the bartender’s a very nice woman, v polite & will explain the menu to you & does make good recommendations. As sweet as she is, bartender needs help with a full bar (including the outside) Food in general is good & service is too.
The servers just stand there at the side of the bar, and watch the bartender as she tries to handle everything. Otherwise they definitely have a hustle in their bustle with the tables!
—Keeping in mind the owner’s run this location as they want, being that it is their franchise & with all of New England destroying what’s left of the state, they’ll only get busier.
Apparently they started doing bingo on Sundays via live mic that you can’t ignore if y’all tried. Personally not a fan & didn’t even bother to ask to change TV’s (all wmn’s basketball)
Would have stayed longer to drink but couldn’t leave fast enough.
The music isn’t Sunday early PM music. Was a mix of club music & well, truly— to each their own. Also too loud & bartender, herself, cldn’t hear anything. With bingo, there is no music so there is no choice & it seems never ending.
It is a good spot but, personally, will call from now on. If they keep doing bingo, won’t be going back.
The managers dress for the corporate world in a suit & tie , which is very respectable and all, but it’s supposed to be a casual family pub so they need to relax more and not be...
Read moreThe atmosphere is what I would go back for on some occasions, maybe, but I would rather just continue to try other places. The server is unknown, she never introduced herself, which is no big deal but I could see why. My wife asked for ranch and she rolled her eyes. My great grandmother asked what type of lemonade and received an answer as if she should know its pink. The only food that really stood out to me is my mother in laws fish sandwich, I think the wrap I had tasted old, the wedges were made wrong and would be better Pan seared. The ahi tuna wrap also needs more tuna, I think it just had vegetables in it but after hearing the waitress talk trash to the bar tender about us for asking for one side of ranch, I did not want to ask for anything else. My great grandmothers drink remained empty till the end and mine was never refilled. We were asked if we wanted refills at the end when I had two bites maybe just one left if you excluded my daughters quesadilla bite I tried at the end. I could keep going but its sad to say, AI would have left me with a better service experience and I am all about person to person communication when I'm running...
