The first time I went to MACS my experience was probably a 5/5. The food was good, the cashier was patient and responsive, and the atmosphere was nice. The second time I went to MACS, just 2 days ago, my experience turned into this 2/5 review. I placed a carry-out order through ChowNow to pick up at 6:30 PM. When my boyfriend and I walked in, there were 2 other people in the restaurant. One lady was on her phone waiting for her order and a guy was standing, waiting to talk to the lady at the counter to pick up his order. The woman at the counter was putting an order (one single container) in a bag for, I would say, one full minute. I've worked in the food industry before (just as recently as one year ago) so I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. However, the lady working 2 nights ago was absolutely unresponsive. Basically to the point of being rude. After she placed the one container in the bag, she continued to ignore the man waiting to get his order for a good 5 minutes. She finally addresses him, gets him his bag and off he goes. I would say at this point my boyfriend and I were standing there for at least 10 minutes. All the while there's an order sitting on a table with no signs saying "ChowNow/GrubHub/etc. orders pick up here" or any other form of identification pointing to the possibility that this bag could possibly be mine. Anyways, after the man got his order, as my boyfriend and I are walking to the counter, the cashier answers the phone and doesn't even acknowledge us. No "hi there I'll be with you in one second" no "I'm sorry I have to take this but I'll be with you in one moment" sort of thing. Nothing. Finally, I was so tired of waiting on this lady and I was so mad, I looked at the order just sitting on the table and lo and behold, it's mine. Sitting there the whole 10-15 minutes my boyfriend and I were standing there. Then, as we're eating I found 3 or 4 pieces of jalapeno in my order of Original Mac. I know I may sound annoying and/or stupid in this review but I've never been so displeased to leave a bad review. Overall, if the woman would've just addressed ANYONE in the restaurant my review would probably be better. She didn't greet anyone, she didn't mention there might be a wait while she put orders together to get your name, and she never said "if you ordered through ChowNow your order is on that table". There was absolutely NO communication the entire time we were there and it was extremely annoying. Honestly, I think the rudest thing she did was wait until my boyfriend and I were right in front of her at the counter to ignore us and...
Read moreM.A.C.S., which stands for Macaroni and Cheese Shop, is an easy place to love. I mean, what's not to adore about a restaurant that offers ten different takes on the ultimate comfort food: mac and cheese.
MACS is located across from the Sun Prairie Woodman's and shares space in a building with a Starbucks and an Elements massage studio. The minimalist interior is an ode to the Dairy State, with cheddar-colored walls and cheesy references covering the wall by the entrance. Despite a constant flow of customers, the restaurant is always clean and well-maintained..
In addition to mac and cheese, MACS serves up six different melts, three wedge salads and three types of desserts. They also offer a kid's menu and a gluten free cheesy potato option to boot.
The mac and cheese dishes come in individual-sized cast iron skillets with two serving sizes: regular (about 6 inches in diameter) and Mac Daddy (about 9 inches in diameter). The skillet is a great serving vessel for this meal, as some of the cheese bakes onto the sides, creating a delicious crunchy foil to the sinfully creamy interior. The only drawback is that is near impossible to scrape the baked-on cheese off, since the flimsy black plastic fork that comes with the meal is no match for that tasty baked-on crust.
The ordering process is similar to Noodles & Company: 1) queue up, review the menu options above the cashier while you wait; 2) order and pay for your meal; 3) receive a number and find a table and 4) an employee delivers the food and the fun began.
The Popeye MAC (provolone, mozzarella, spinach, sautéed onions and mushrooms) I ordered needs to be renamed the Magic Mushroom, since the pile of expertly sautéed, fresh mushrooms were the highlight of this dish. Other than needing more spinach to balance the richness of the dish, MACS impressed with how well they prepared my order. With perfectly cooked al dente ribbed macaroni, the crunchy, golden brown bread crumb topping and the sinfully creamy cheese sauce, this is comfort food done right.
I also enjoy the flavors offered by the Original MAC and the Mama's MAC (cheddar and mozzarella cheese with fried hot dogs). While it's not gourmet fare, MACS does a fantastic job producing delicious...
Read moreHow can I recall the fail of this eatery? Not trying to be a Karen, but we ordered online and had a confirmation #, including a charge to the bank...and the brilliant person who waited on us answered "We don't have your name"...and when we showed her she said "Are you sure you ordered from the right Macs?" - as we are physically showing her the phone and order is in Sun Prairie........ So then she had the brilliant idea of asking "Would you like to order something I mean you're here". No. We are already showing you the receipt\payment for our order, but since you can't read, your response is for us to order again and pay more..and maybe this time it will come from Narnia and we can get food. What? No. Never again. We went down the street to Taco Bell. Not only did we get our food and the order was right,it took less than 5 minutes. I almost laughed at the Mac employee when she said "would you like to order something?"...wouldn't better customer service be to read the damn phone I'm holding in front of your face and make good on the order I paid for?...and not assume I'm a moron, and I picked the wrong store. Girl, it said Sun Prairie - learn to read. Even the Amish can read and they drop out at 5th grade. Thanks for the horrific service and may noodles have mercy on your...
