I'm house sitting for family and it's my first time in WI. I've been to a few of the other restaurants and I looked up the Tipsy Cow and the menu was very enticing and I couldn't wait to try it.
When I arrived I got confused by seeing an ATM right in front of the door so I asked the host if they took credit cards and she looked at me funny, but they do accept cards. Not sure why the ATM is there.
Atmosphere is a bit different than I thought, but very fun and inviting. It wasn't too busy my server Owen brought me a glass of water and I decided that was enough. I did catch a special of mac & cheese bites and I decided to give them a try. These did NOT disappoint. I know WI is known for it's cheese curds, but after eating them at two different locations I thought I'd mix it up a bit. Definitely recommend them!
I then asked for my "own grilled cheese" basically there grilled cheese with bacon and garlic aioli on sourdough. It came out very fast, too fast but I was fine with it. I dove in and I was impressed at first bite. However the bacon was tough and I had to pull it with my fingers as to not eat the whole piece in one bite. As I continued I saw that one side wasn't toasted at all, the cheeses had not all melted. My opinion with a grilled cheese with lots of cheese should be done low and slow and ensure all cheeses are melted and a nice golden crisp on both sides. I truly am baffled when restaurants (because this is not my first time with a undercooked grilled cheese) get it wrong.
Owen checked in and saw that I was back to the mac & cheese bites and could tell I was done with the grilled cheese and showed concern, I said it just wasn't fully cooked and it was delicious but I couldn't eat more. He offered to discount it and I said absolutely not.
I was very interested in the Cheesecake and Cherry Compote desert, so I took it to go.
I got the check and I'll say the price is good for what you get.
When I got home and started to dig into the desert, in my first bite I ate cherry stem and maybe people like that but it was a turn off and the cheesecake was not very tasty.
I'm here for a few more days and I am going to go back and have the mac & cheese because I really loved the bites, so I'd like to give them another try.
Definitely think it was an off night as there was a lot of people eating when I left and I can't imagine people will frequent a place that can't get it right.
Owen was great and I showed it in my tip. I'm surprised my credit card didn't ask if it was valid because it was nearly the same as the bill total. But I think it has...
Read moreAnother day, another Madison restaurant to try out. For us, Tipsy Cow had some really great dishes and a couple things that were not our favorite.
My wife loved the Pork Carnitas Taco Platter. The pork was so tender and well seasoned, and the tacos themselves were absolutely stuffed with filling. They almost wouldn't stay closed and meat just spilled out when you are eat them. The salsa verde was incredible. It was really light and fresh tasting. I would definitely recommend ordering an extra side of the salsa to smother the tacos in. The beans were decent, nothing too exciting but pretty good.
The cheese curds were still crispy even after surviving the drive home with our carryout, and that's definitely saying something. They were a little bit on the greasy side, but that's to be expected with fried cheese for sure. The ranch dressing on the side was amazing. Not too strong on the dill flavor and perfect for dunking cheese curds or pretty much anything else into.
The 2x2 Cheeseburger was DELICIOUS. It was incredibly juicy, well seasoned and had a fresh baked bun. It may not look like much, but this was everything you could want in a cheeseburger and more. There's a reason people say if you're looking for a good burger, go to Tipsy Cow.
The Beer Battered Fries were perfectly crispy and also survived the drive home without becoming soggy and greasy. Definitely a win in my book. It make sense why they have so many appetizers based around their fries with various toppings since the fries themselves are amazing.
The Chicken Fritters were not our favorite. The chicken itself was very juicy and tender, but the breading slid off entirely when you'd go to take a bite. Not super crispy overall, they were a bit soggy in texture. It's surprising since we had googled Best Chicken Strips in Madison and Tispy Cow was at the top of a few lists. Not really what we were expecting. We would definitely recommend the burger and tacos over the chicken fritters.
Overall Tipsy Cow is definitely worth a visit, especially if you want to experience some great locally sourced food. They knocked it out of the park on their tacos, burgers and...
Read moreThe last time I went here I was 6 months pregnant and just assumed it was me being sensitive. But after this afternoons experience, I can safely say that this restaurant does not care about the publics feed back or opinion. Started the afternoon off with a strawberry daiquiri, only to notice immediately that they had my favorite New Glarus beer on tap, Raspberry tart. I mentioned that I regretted my decision, but that I was happy with the daiquiri. The bartender poured me a sample of the raspberry tart, since he heard me raving about it. I pulled out my laptop (after asking if it was okay), and started doing research on jobs in the area, as I am currently employed but looking for a change. Anyway, bartender says it’s fine, I ask him what he thinks of the special that is a carnitas pork sandwich, he doesn’t have much to say, I ask if the lack of ham would change how good the sandwich was, he told me it probably wouldn’t. So I ordered it, as I do like pulled pork, but I really dislike roasted ham. I took a single bite of the sandwich and knew immediately it wasn’t for me. The taste was off, it was overpowering, and just not something I enjoyed. I didn’t take another bite. I inquired with the bartender if he could take the sandwich off my check, since I really did not like it, and he said “well normally I would, but you modified the sandwich, that’s probably why it doesn’t taste good” taken back, I sheepish responded with “okay…” and then the bartender said something else “well what’s wrong with it?!” I explained that the pork wasn’t a taste I enjoyed and that it was too overpowering and he huffed. Then walked away. I laid my card down to pay, because the last thing I want to be judged for is food I paid for that I didn’t enjoy. I asked for my check shortly after that, not even finishing my drink. I asked him if he was the manager, and he said he was. When I informed him how rude and uncalled for it was to respond to my dislike of the food, he just told me to have a good day. I definitely won’t be back to this location, or any for that matter, and I encourage you...
