Little Sicily: A beacon of excellence
For many of us old enough to remember. We long for a simpler time. A time where there were no “chain” restaurants. No endless stream of streamlined choices. Today it is all about speed and efficiency. Ownership is an alien word in the food of today. This applies to most restaurants, in a competitive industry; it’s keep moving, innovating, changing, or die. But that is not the way it should be. Little Sicily is proof that there is a much better way, a way that has withstood the test of time and trend. A way that blows away this trendy competition.
Little Sicily is a beacon of excellence, a time machine into the world we long for. The most important words as you enter this gem is, “Family Owned and Operated.” You step through this threshold and you walk into a special place, simple in it’s decorations, but rooted in family and love. You’re greeted warmly and you see everyone behind your order taker working hard on the food coming out. For a first-timers like ourselves, we asked for recommendations and advice. We received it with the warmth that makes you feel special.
I ordered a Chicago Beef. A favorite of mine that almost NO ONE does right. My wife ordered the small lunch pizza. We sat down, there were maybe a dozen people seated, everything we saw looked amazing. As regulars walked in they were greeted by all the staff, the owner George made a point of coming out to speak to EVERYONE.
Our food came quickly and this was truly the star of the show. My beef was PERFECTION! I’ve had many beef sandwiches and a few good ones, this was AMAZING! The depth of beef flavor was stunning, it was perfectly prepared with some provolone over the top and a lovely au jus on the side. Fantastic French fries completed my little dish. They were equally as good.
My wife ordered the lunch pizza with sausage. WOW! It was a delicious thin crust Sicilian pizza with beautiful sauce and cheese. The sausage was perfect. It was hot, crispy, delicious all at once.
As we sat and enjoyed our lunch more and more people were moving in and out, but there was always room. When we were finished. George, the owner, came out to talk to us. With a towel draped over his shoulder he asked about our food. As I raved, you could see the pride this man has at what he does. He tells us he’s been out here for 22 years and loves it. He talks to us about the food and the love and care put into the preparation. This man is a master craftsman who takes joy in delighting others and it shows.
We talked about deserts and he told us about the Tiramisu. How a family friend made it in Chicago and he has it shipped out here. My wife said IT WAS AMAZING! We also ordered the Cannoli, which I loved. It was rich, but not too sweet.
As we sat there satisfied with a lunch that was a bargain. I marveled over how good our experience was. This actually happened at restaurants in years past where the owner took so much pride, not in following a formula, but rather perfecting his craft, and sharing it with those that came in, treating them as family.
That’s how Little Sicily makes you feel. Like you’re a member of George’s family and he is cooking for you. How can a dining experience get any better? It can’t. I’ve dined at the finest Michelin restaurants and around the world, but I can honestly say. I will take Little Sicily and George over...

Read moreWhat an incredible hidden gem! This unassuming little place has the most incredible Italian food! The sauce tastes like an Italian nonna simmered it all day with the perfect fresh spices. The lasagna has 8(!!) delicate noodle layers, I've never tasted anything like it! My dad had the chicken parm which was juicy & tender & delicious, even the side salad was super fresh. I can't wait to try the pizza!
If you can come on a Thurs, Fri, or Sat you might get to meet Elliott, the hardest working young man in Arizona. Even though its a counter-service restaurant that does mostly takeout, he bent over backwards to make sure everyone felt welcome & provide the kind of customer service you'd expect in a fancy restaurant that costs 4x as much. We overheard some customers that seemed like they were going to be difficult but he was a total champ & made them feel really cared for, I was so impressed.
I'll be back as often as I can, I live in Tempe but this place is absolutely...
