In an age where genuine hospitality can feel rare, Fonda Cactus Mexican Kitchen is a shining example of how to do things right. This restaurant is an absolute gem, and our experience here was one of the most heartwarming I've had in a very long time. From the moment you walk in, you feel less like a customer and more like a guest in their home. The service is incredibly warm, attentive, and delivered with what can only be described as love. This culminated in an unforgettable gesture from the owner himself—who is so humble and grounded. He noticed our interest in guacamole and insisted on preparing a fresh batch for us right then and there, serving it with a smile and refusing to even charge for it. It was, without a doubt, one of the freshest and most delicious guacamoles I have ever tasted. The exceptional quality continued with our main courses. The food here is simply out of this world. What makes it stand out is the focus on authentic flavor and generous, high-quality ingredients. The dishes were packed full of fresh vegetables and savory fillings, not just loaded with cheese as a shortcut. It’s clear their philosophy is that incredible taste matters more than just flashy presentation. Adding to the wonderful experience are the incredibly reasonable prices, which feel like a bargain for the quality you receive. These days, it often feels like tipping is an obligation regardless of the service quality. This was one of those rare and special occasions where I was genuinely excited and proud to leave a generous tip. It was earned through pure kindness and excellence. Hats off to the owner and the entire team at Fonda Cactus. This is...
Read moreExcellent food, friendly and inviting service. We were greeted and thanked for taking a chance. The owner made sure to let me know that this is not a restaurant, that it is a fonda, a less formal eating experience. It was very relaxed and intimate. I'm glad we found this place. It's a brick and mortar version of a good food wagon. Decoration is sparse with concrete floors and booth style seating. My Cuban sandwich was one of the best, if not the best, that I've ever had, and I've been ordering food for 60+ years. The beans and rice and pico de gallo were a nuanced taste bud experience. The homemade fruit punches were a perfect pairing with the food. The tres leches was subtle and delicate, unlike the usual heavy handed, overly rich versions that abound at Hispanic/Mexican eateries. Not well marked from the street, so plug in the address to get you to this delicious hideaway. We'll be...
Read moreWhen we ordered our Pork Tenderloin Tampiquena and Chile Paquilla meals, Bernando, the owner, told us we'd love our choices. And he was so right! Everything was incredibly delicious. By far the best Mexican food I've had since moving away from Southern California in the late 70s. The fresh Strawberry Tres Leche cake was yummy too.
We especially enjoyed the dobladitas side dish. It was so good that we bought their fresh tortillas to take home and try making it ourselves. Bernando even told us exactly how to make dobladitas. We loved hearing stories behind some of the other recipes passed down over the generations.
The service was just the best! The prices were very reasonable.
We thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience and can't wait to return during our...
