Jeri's (Market Plaza) — Restaurant in Tallahassee

The interior had too much mechanical noise to sit there. Outside was fine per se, but one really loud person messed that experience up. My companion ordered a standard breakfast, which she gave a C- grade that is not commensurate with the high price. I ordered a Cuban sandwich and Collard Soup. The latter was in large pieces that included the midrib of the leaf and was only lightly cooked. It was in bowl so tiny that I found it hard to obtain a piece of Collard with the spoon that was provided without pushing another piece out of the bowl. Overall, a silly presentation of a novel way of cooking collards. What was sold as a Cuban sandwich was deficient in several ways: The bread was a baguette with extremely hard crust. There was about half as much meat as in a Gordo's Cuban. There was no cheese. The pickle was super thin and tasteless. Worst of all, the so-called Cuban was not pressed. I had my first Cuban in 1966 at the College Inn in Gainesville and since have eaten many. They have always been pressed. AI says a Cuban should be pressed. I was recommended this restaurant by a coworker. My sister and I ate there this morning for the first time. It was okay. I probably would not come back. Things that were pretty decent: breakfast potatoes, bacon, scrambled eggs, red velvet latte, and our server. Things that could have been better: kenny benny, smoky grits meal, and mimosa. When we arrived we placed our orders right away and were informed it would take alittle longer than usual because they needed to remake the hollandaise sauce. In my personal opinion, I don't really think it added anything to the dish as the plate was kind of bland/flavorless. My sister ordered the smoky grits, but the grits were also bland/flavorless, kind of watery, and she did not taste any gouda in the grits. She did not finish her plate. After attending the Taste in the Garden event in Tallahassee and loving Jeri’s grits, we decided to visit the restaurant. We were seated right away, which was great, and the staff was generally polite.

We came on a Saturday morning, so I expected a normal brunch rush — but that wasn’t the case. The restaurant wasn’t full, yet it took over 10 minutes just to get a lemonade and over 40 minutes after being seated, we were still waiting on our food. I noticed other tables around us also waiting, so it seemed like the kitchen got backed up and no one was communicating that to customers.

Being seated for over 40 minutes without food is frustrating. If I’d known breakfast wouldn’t arrive until noon, I would’ve gone somewhere else. With that being said, the food was amazing — exactly why we wanted to come in the first place. I’ll definitely be back, but maybe not...
