Quick Summary Food: All delicious, reheats well. Delivery: fast. Ordering: semi-complicated Absolute favorites dishes: Mu Shu Pork and Steamed Pork Dumplings
Food: The first time we ordered from Chou's we went with two entrées and one appetizer. The pork fried rice (with medium spice, 中辣猪肉炒饭) was very tasty though the pork strips were a bit dry. Entrée was about 3.5 cups large. Szechuan spicy diced chicken (辣子鸡丁) was amazing, but half of the dish is comprised of dried peppers so avoid this if you have a delicate constitution. Entrée was about 2.5 cups altogether. The appetizer was the absolute best part of the night: mini steamed pork soup dumplings (小笼包). There is around 1 Tbsp of juicy, seasoned meat and a few teaspoons of soup within each of the ten steamed buns, perfectly sized for small mouths. There was also a side of white rice (~2 full cups) included for each person in the delivery.
Pictured: We inhaled most of the food upon receipt but what was left was reheated in a pot the next day. It tasted just as great as the day before. Pictured is 1-2 tablespoons of water with pork fried rice at bottom, spicy diced chicken above and a pork dumpling, and was covered until warm.
Ordering: In the time of a pandemic, we're very reliant on food delivery. Usually this can be done through the restaurant's website or an established delivery service. Chou's Kitchen is a bit more complicated than that.
The website is quite nice, featuring menus in both English and simplified Mandarin, but contains no pictures. When the site launches, you are first directed to scan a QR code so make sure you can scan do so with your phone's camera, browser or an applicable app. Scanning the QR code will automatically open the ordering menu and cart. After placing the items you want into the cart, it will forward to the main screen into which you can add the delivery address, notes for individual entrees (add spice, etc), adjust the tip and specify the expected delivery window.
When you go to pay, the screen blacks out for a bit before asking that you either login to the payment portal through Facebook (??) or SMS verify your phone. I verified by SMS. After this, smooth sailing and an order confirmation number was immediately generated. The expected delivery time was listed as 1 minute after the order was placed, but I suspect this is a software glitch. Total ordering time took ~10 minutes though I expect the ordering process will go much faster in the future now that I have everything verified and setup.
EDIT: we've since ordered from Chou's again and the process took less than 2 minutes from start to finish.
Delivery: Our order was placed around 5:50PM, we selected the 'ASAP' delivery option and the food arrived hot around 6:35PM. Pretty good given we're close to ASU campus and there is always traffic and construction nearby. Contactless delivery: once he arrived, the driver placed the food by our door, knocked and moved back a far distance to ensure that we picked up our food.
Unrelated downsides: Food was delivered in small and large styrofoam containers that cannot be recycled and will not degrade over time. I'm not sure if there are alternatives they could employ, but keep this in mind when ordering.
Verdict: Though the ordering process was a bit complex at the beginning, we will be ordering from Chou's Kitchen again. Great food...
Read moreThis was the worst Chinese food I have ever had. We were in Tempe for one night and I the mood for Chinese food. The reviews at Chou's looked promising. Unfortunately everything except the pork dumplings was horrible. Everything was heavy on soy sauce. I ordered Kung Pao chicken. There were no chilies so it was bland and not spicy at all. I didn't request no chilies so not sure if it was a mistake or they assumed the white guy couldn't handle spicy food. I understand soy sauce is an ingredient in the dish but that's all I tasted. My partner ordered minced pork with vermicelli noodles. It was a pile of mush in a pool of soy sauce. Again, I know there is soy sauce in this dish, but it was literally swimming in a dark brown pool. There was no other visible color. We also ordered pork fried rice. The rice was still white as snow but oily. It was more like white rice with pork strips and eggs mixed with some oil. The only item that was edible was the pork dumplings but even those tasted of soy sauce. We ordered iced teas which were never brought to table. After eating the pork dumplings, the other dishes came out. When we decided they were inedible, we got the check, paid and left. I am not one to waste food and have never left full plates of food. I don't understand how this place has such a decent rating. Perhaps this was an off night or perhaps because this is a college area the usual clientele have no idea what decent Chinese food tastes like. I don't post a lot of reviews and if you look at what I do post I like posting positive experiences. Unfortunately this food was so awful it...
Read moreTook my granddaughter here a few weeks ago and we LOVED it. We had pork fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, and the mixed veggies in garlic sauce; everything was delicious.
I had business in Tempe on Monday, 3/7/22 and thought I'd swing by for some to go to take home for several meals. Ordered the same exact thing. While the staff was super nice and I felt that my business was highly appreciated I have to report that my sweet and sour chicken was horrible and I also did not get the two sides of white rice with that or my veggies.
I hope the staff reads this because I really liked going there the first time. When I got home the food was still warm and the veggies still bright and crisp, the fried rice, while not your typical fried rice with soy sauce (you can add that if you want and it tastes great!) was yummy. However, even though the red peppers and onions in the chicken were still bright and crunchy the chicken had that texture like freezer burn and every other piece I chewed and chewed and chewed and it would never break down. The last time the chicken was like good chicken. This was like inedible chicken jerky, and worst of all, there was a small bone in there that I bit down on and that was kind of gross. I had to throw it out so there was money down the drain.
I suspect that the chicken was already cooked and someone over-microwaved it to warm it up, hence the inedible condition. I don't know how you would explain...
