The structure of the restaurant draws you to curiosity and with me being a seafood lover, I definitely needed to check it out. My first visit there was an hour wait and this girl right here loves food but not enough to wait outside for an hour lol There are a ton of options nearby. I continued to hear friends rave about the micheladas and their food, as well as reading all the positive reviews on here, I had to see for myself. So I went there tonight. First off, as a first timer I was completely confused. You walk in and you don't really know what to do. Do you seat yourself? Do you wait for a hostess? After standing around for a few minutes we decided to seat ourselves since no one said anything. It's very packed and very loud in there. It's a very casual spot, no tables or booths, just sit around the "bar" area. No waiters/waitresses. We didn't know that so we sat and waited. I finally decided to ask the man next to me how ordering works there. His advice was to just yell at them what you wanted to eat. Lol We were seated near the windows and didn't want to yell so we decided to move to the center. The man didn't speak much English but I was able to understand the sign for drink as he moved his hands to his mouth and tilted his head back slightly. When my son requested water, I watched him quickly grabbed a cup, scooped into a sink full of ice next to other sinks with oysters and beer bottles in them, turned the faucet, then slammed it in front of him. I asked for Sprite and was given 7 Up. There wasn't a polite, "Sorry ma'am we don't carry Sprite but will 7UP be okay for you?". No, it's not that kind of restaurant. Lol We ordered 2 dozen oysters, 2 seafood platters and a bowl of gumbo. I watched them handle money, chuck oysters, serve food, clean the counters and hand out drinks by the rim back to back with no hand washing in between. 8 guys in the front and 3 females in the back kitchen area. They are very fast paced and are not very concerned with cleanliness. The place also has limited space being that its shaped like a boat. Plates were passed over our heads, in front of our faces, oyster plates dripped on our heads/food...so there's the disadvantage of sitting at the center bar instead of the stools near the windows. Food was hot and freshly served and it was okay but not the best. Our Gumbo was overflowing and dripped every where. Sauces they handed to me were dripping too and smeared on my fingers. Just a very SLOPPY experience overall. It's like ordering food at the flea market instead of an actual restaurant. Definitely not as hyped up as some ppl have made it out to be. I've come to realize that the people who swear up and down to me about the quality of food and service obviously hasn't eaten out a lot, traveled much or written enough reviews. Before taking advice from a review on Google or Yelp, look to see how many reviews they've written and how often do they eat out? I love trying new places but I probably won't come back here a...

Highly recommended. Fantastic Food!

Ok. This is not a fancy restaurant but it is VERY good. Service was quick and efficient and the food was inexpensive and delicious.

Was driving to a different Costco than the one I usually go to and drove right past this funny looking building (looks like a boat - google the pictures). Decided to give it a shot and what an AWESOME decision!

You walk in what looks like a bar (elongated U-shape) with an open kitchen on one side and bar stools all around. There are some seats facing outwards as well. Although they were very busy, the staff were laughing and having a good time.

Menu is on a placard hanging over the kitchen and is quite simple. Pulled up to an empty seat and proceeded to order from one of the 4-5 guys working behind the bar.

I ordered a michelada, 1 dozen oysters, 1 bowl of gumbo and the fried special.

Michelada: (if you do not know what this is, google it). My server cut the lime in front of me, squeezed it into a cold mug, added some spices, tossed some salt and asked me what beer I wanted (went with a Corona). The whole thing took 30 seconds max. Very tasty with a hint of spice (ended up adding a dash or two of hot sauce). Very refreshing

Oysters: gulf oysters and very fresh. Shucked my order right in front of me. Took him maybe 1 minutes and he delivered a small platter full of large, plump and incredibly fresh oysters with a small container of chili sauce (think ketchup + a hint of spice). On the bar, was a large container of quartered lemons and lots of napkins + 3-4 different hot sauces. Needless to say, I inhaled those oysters. Double yum!

As I was on my last oyster, I asked for a bowl of their seafood gumbo and ordered the fried special.

The soup was mostly seafood (crab, shrimp, etc.) - more the consistency of porridge rather than a watery soup. It was very very good - would definitely re-order.

Fried Special: the board indicated 3 shrimp and 3 oysters. Ended up being served 3 shrimp, 7 oysters and fries. Food was hot (right out of the fryer) and had no hint of old oil or after taste. The shrimp and oysters were dredged in cornmeal and tasted oh so good!

The bill was around $35. You walk up to the cashier, tell him what you ordered and pay. They take cash and credit cards.

This is now my go-to place if I ever end up in the same neighborhood. The experience makes me want to try other Captain Tom's to see if the location on 1960 is a fluke or other outlets are equally as good. We'll see.

PS. Loved the oyster shells used around the...

DO NOT GO THERE!! It was a horrible experience and I am so grossed out. There is so much cross contamination going on, I could not bare to see it anymore. First of all the food is really nothing to get excited about. If you already have a go-to seafood joint, stick to it. There is nothing but disgusting atmosphere and a number of food safety violations here. If you are looking for a seafood place, GO TO CATFISH STATION!!! Their food is much better for your buck and you will not be disappointed!! The man in charge of taking our order had a band aid on his finger and it was not covered with a glove. And I watched him peel cooked shrimp, with both hands, grab glass beer mug, grab a plastic pitcher that was filled with tomato sauce or something, then grab a salt shaker, fresh lime, squeeze the lime with his hands, and grab a bottle beer and serve it to the customer!! AND HE NEVER WASHED HIS HANDS OR PUT GLOVES ON! There was shellfish contamination all over that! And to make matters worse, the salt shaker or plastic pitcher were never wiped off. The other workers just kept grabbing it with bare hands. Then I saw the cooks on the back grabbing cooked food with their bare hands. One lady grabbed a raw prepped stuffed crab with her bare hands, started patting and put it in the fryer. Then grabbed a fryer basket and emptied french fries onto an plate!! OMG, it was so wrong! The worse $30 I spent in my life while dining out! Then the cashier was coughing all over the place, which by the way, he is located right by the pass through window where food is ready to be picked up and served to customers! GROSS!!!! Do not eat there!!!...

I have been eating at Captain Tom’s for over 25 years, and the food is always excellent. They used to be located just a couple of blocks east on FM1960 before moving to their current location on FM1960 at Bobcat Rd. The new location is about 50% larger than the old location, but they still have standing room only crowds at certain times of the day. I think they have the best gumbo and fried shrimp anywhere. Everything is really informal, so just come in and grab a seat anywhere. If you grab a seat on the outer ring by the windows, you will just have to get the attention of a server and give him your order because when the servers are not busy cleaning off the bar or delivering plates of food, they are busy shucking oysters. They don’t make out tickets, but get the food as soon as you tell them what you want. The seafood orders are passed to the kitchen and then they get the gumbo and cold drink for you. By the time you have finished your cup of gumbo, the seafood from the kitchen is usually ready. When paying the bill, you simply tell the cashier what you had. I wish they would add a few desserts to the menu (i.e. ice cream, cheesecake, etc.). See my recent picture of the current menu (8/10/2017).

The building is shaped like a boat. The seats are all stools and no tables, just two long communal bars. One lines the inside and the other lines the outer wall with the walk way in between. The whole restaurant is U shaped, very cramped seating. Place was pretty dirty: trash all over the floor, dirty restrooms, and dirty bar counters. The horseradish is in a big container for everyone to share. There is a very high chance that people have stuck their dirty utensils in it before way before I arrived. The food was good. Ordered oysters, gumbo, seafood platter, Crab fingers, stuffed jalapeños, michelada. The oysters were okay, dirty, and wasn't on a bed of ice. Gumbo was okay but the ingredients were overcooked. The seafood platter was good. The catfish, hush puppies, and tartar sauce were good. Stuffed crab was okay. The jalapeños stuffed with crab were good. Overall it was an okay experience. The restaurant seemed disorganized but the employees knew what they were doing. There are no servers or host. We seat ourselves down, and the oyster shucker guys take the order.
