The problems with the staff is still happening - sort the reviews by date and you'll see many of the recent comments all becos of it. Wished I had read the reviews in detail before visiting here.
For context days earlier I tried the pizza from a brick and mortar location and was blown away - the dough was fluffy and the pizza was baked just right with the cheese on the edges crispy and not burnt, toppings and cheese were great. It was such a good first taste of Detroit style pizza I wanted to try again just days later.
But I waited 30mins for my order, and the order online still shows pending; when I knock several times on the food truck there was no response; the windows were shut tight I thought it was closed for the day. Fortunately I caught glance of a guy working it in it.
Asked for my pizza which I then found out was already ready on the shelves for awhile... He didn't seem apologetic about not updating the order status and keep me waiting. Also gave me the wrong order leaving out my drink.. kept insisting that's all to the order until I showed him the order I placed.
Had I not the much better first experience elsewhere I definitely would not give this...
Read moreAs a guy born and raised in Michigan, I was surprised to see a place that bills itself as "Detroit-style pizza". Is there such a thing? I had to sample the pies just to find out. The staff in the trailer were probably some of the most unfriendly Austin folks I've met here. Perhaps they were tired, as it was later in the evening. I jokingly asked them about the Detroit-style and what it meant, but they weren't having any of it and shrugged it off without an answer. It took about 3 minutes and I had my slice of their pizza. It was served on a paper plate with a napkin. The slice of pizza was square and what I consider "deep dish". I guess that's what makes it Detroit-style. If you ever go to Little Ceasers and order deep dish, this is the style they claim is from the Mitt. It's very doughy with sauce on top and then cheese/toppings above that. The flavor was reminiscent of what I grew up on, and I was never really a fan of that style. I finished it, but it's not something I would go back and try. They receive a lot of great reviews on here, so I believe it's more of my personal preference that makes me rate...
Read moreI really, really liked this pizza. It's not Chicago (deep dish), nor New York (thin crust), but some magical hybrid of square pizza yumminess, whether you're getting something fanciful or traditional. We got one of each, including a basic pepperoni-style pizza, and one full of veggies and fancy cheese. Both were delicious in their own way, crispy-on-the-edges, just-the-right-chewiness in the middle. The cheese was perfectly melty, and toppings melded into the dough. All just delicious! And, bonus, they reheated well! Which is worth noting, since more than two slices of one of these bad boys is just gratuitous calories. Frankly, one slice is probably plenty, but I dare you to be able to stop!
While every single pizza on the menu sounds amazing, and I want to try them all, I highly recommend going when you have some time to spend. The wait was about an hour, but totally worth it, and you can hang out in the Violet Crown while you wait. And that's the subject of another review, but TLDR: nice spot...
