I have no idea how I missed experiencing Wise Guys before this week. Their food is excellent and authentic. Maybe some Monsters of the Midway fans will differ, but i am telling you - their sandwiches are legit!
Wiseguys is a micro-chain started in 2009 by Jerry Dugger and Bill Nychay. Their first store in Harker Heights, an hour north of Round Rock, was designed to bring the tastes of Chicago to Central Texas through a 1920s mobster decor and theme. The Round Rock location opened in 2018.
The menu has five broad categories including Cheesesteaks, Burgers, Sandwiches & More, Dogs and Healthier Options. The do have a kids menu too.
My consigliere and I tried two choices - The Bonnie & Clyde Cheesesteak and the Italian Beef Sandwich.
The Bonnie & Clyde has an Italian sausage on the bottom of the roll with a full Chicago Cheese Steak on top. They use a very generous amount of grilled sirloin piled high with peppers, onions mushrooms and melted white American cheese. It is a delicious beast of a handheld.
We have been on a roll lately, pun intended, tasting great cheesesteaks across the region including R&Bs, Mum Foods, Hoodies, Grata's and Litttle Deli. RIP 1776 and Way South Philly. Delaware Sub is up tp try next.
Wiseguys' version definitely should be in the conversation for Best of Austin (Overall Cheesesteak, but not a true Philly).
The Italian Beef is technically a sandwich. However, I chose the wet version of it, where their homemade au jus sauce is poured over top. It is served in a little foil shell. This is key, because under a huge handful of seasoned roast beef, and sweet peppers there is a bun. The foil on the bottom allowed the au jus to soak into the bread and create soft mouth-watering bites best accessed with a knife and fork. Did I mention I added fresh gardinia and melted cheese on top?
I was told by the manager if you can only get one sandwich, get the Italian Beef. Now you can see why.
I would be remiss if I did not tell you about their hot dogs. I was personally in Chicago two weeks ago for my daughter's wedding and stopped by Portillo's & Barnelli's for an authentic Chicago-style dog. It is considered one of the top places to get these treats. I know, it's very touristy, but my point is, it set the standard for what a Chicago-style hot dog should be.
Wiseguys buys their meats from the Windy City. All the toppings are done the same way as my frank was dressed at P&Bs down to the really green relish, tomatoes, and sport peppers.
With no disrespect to Midway Dogs (south of Austin) Mad Dogs (near UT) or T-Loc Sonora (off of Burnett), Wiseguys makes a real case for best hot dogs in the city.
Note: My hot dog photo did not turn out, so I borrowed theirs off of Google.
Lots of yummy offerings at Wiseguys. Give them a try and let me know if I'm wrong....
Read moreFound this place a couple of months back, apologize, I'm a little behind on my reviews. A few months ago was driving down Greenlawn and saw pics in their windows. Looked incredible so decided to stop, so glad I did. This place is awesome!! Have been 4 times now and each time it's just as good as the first!! 1st visit I had the lunch special, it was a cheesesteak of some sort but was really good. My friend had the Bonnie and Clyde, he said it was awesome! Of course they came with the fresh cut fries which were TRUE fresh cut fries. Very few places serve them anymore, skin on, lightly salted with a season salt, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Center cuts are soft as they should be. Incredibly delicious!! While there the owner came around greeting the guests and gave a complimentary Cannoli's. Was so full after my meal, was able to eat half I was only able to take a bite of the Cannoli. Ohh goodness, it was very good. A dusting of powdered sugar and a drizzle of chocolate syrup on top. Crispy shell with a incredible tasty cream inside. It was rich and delicious!! Definitely recommend it. The owner recommended on next visit to try their burgers, 1/2 lb. is best, 75/25 on the cut so you still get that juicy true burger taste. He also informed us that they are starting to serve breakfast on the wkends now, Saturday and Sundays from 8-12. 2nd visit was for breakfast, full on breakfast, diner style and very good once again!! 3rd visit was the ultimate visit yet!! Tried the Mafia Burger!! Omg!! If you love a Jalapeno burger? This is it!! I was in TRUE burger heaven if there's such a thing. Throw in the fresh cut fries? It's the best ever!! 4th visit? Yeah, YOU guessed it, had the Mafia burger again. You just cut it in half, eat half, half fries then take home. Later put in oven at 350 until bun gets brown. Just as good as eating it at the time it was first cooked. Keep in mind, for the combo it's almost $13 but for the food you get? It's worth it!! Thanks Wiseguys for making such great food and having that at home atmosphere. Your my #1 restaurant in the food...
Read moreMy bf and I are both from the Chicagoland area and decided to give this place a try. We ordered the Italian Beef wet w/cheese and peppers, the gyro, the meatball sandwich, and garlic Parmesan fries.
The Italian beef sandwich was very good. The au jus was flavorful along with the beef. The Giardiniera peppers had some good heat. The sandwich was nice and juicy with just enough cheese. We both really enjoyed this sandwich, up until the very end of the meal. When we first got our meal, there was a burnt “thing” in the Italian beef that my bf originally thought was a burnt clump of cheese. He picked it off and tossed it aside. Once we were almost done eating, he started looking at it and discovered … it was melted plastic, like Saran Wrap!! Gross!! Lost a grade, giving it a B+.
The gyro is not what you’re used to if you’re from Chicago. It’s not off the skewer and even after ordering extra meat, it was still only enough for one pita. The onion were diced which yes, that makes a difference, and the tzatziki sauce definitely needs work! The pita was good and I liked the feta cheese. It was ok. I’d give it a C+.
The meatball sub… I was really hoping for gold, but what we got was an underwhelming tomato sauce, with 4 small meatballs, and cheese on a bun. C- unfortunately. Hoody’s sub shop down the road makes a KILLER meatball sub, jfyi.
Garlic parm fries were good. My bf loved them lol. Soaked in butter and sprinkled with parm, what could go wrong? I would have preferred a thinner cut fry with more crisp, more garlic as I barely tasted any, and try being more generous with the parm. With that being said, they were the only thing we finished all the way so kudos on a yummy fry. Well deserved A.
The restaurant itself is cool with different references from Chicago gangsters. The guy at the counter was professional and courteous, answered any questions we had. I’m not sure the food we ordered was worth the $50 bill, but it is what it is. We may be back to try the hot dogs, but it probably won’t be anytime soon. Overall grade/score = 3...
