Shrimp Express — Restaurant in Thornton Township

04-06-2024 After the disaster on 02-27-24. I stopped my weekly visits. However, I decided to give them one more try hoping my last visit was just a fluke. When the new owner took over I came back September 2023 on a weekly basis and the jumbos were excellent nicely cooed, true jumbo size, excellent. However today they were medium shrimp with tons of crust that made them look like large shrimp. Even with tons of coating they didn't look the size of true jumbos they were selling before. All I have to say, your not fooling me. You are now selling medium and calling them jumbo, yet charging jumbo prices. Not nice. You started out great but now you are just like Bobs calling medium with tons of coating, and charging for Jumbos. You lost a steady customer. You can't con a 30 year customer of Bobs, going back to when Bob served huge Jumbos. PS:. Also there was one spoiled shrimp in the order - that after taking a bite, I had to spit it out. It's over, I'm done.

02-27-2024 Been coming weekly since 9-2-23 for the jumbo shrimp. They have been excellent every week However today when I arrived they were on sale for 16.99. I said to myself, same great jumbos for a buck off. Not so. They were horrible with some weird odd taste. Not sure if they were old or some seconds they got at discount. Really disappointing and really off putting. Now I'm not sure I should go back there again. Also tried the fish chips (whch were nuggets) for the first time. They had a thick hard corn meal coating definitely not Atlantic cod but probably Pacific. They were disgusting. The actual fish was very dry and tasteless and hard thick corn meal coating just doesn't go with cod. Cod should have a light flour batter. All and all this was truly horrible. My advice to them is to go back the fresh jumbo shrimp they use to use, I'll be happy to pay the extra money for quality. And if they want to sell cod, get fresh cod and batter it in a light beer batter. Sorry that I no longer can count on them for the consistent quality they had before.

9-3-2023 This is update. For those of you who don't know, Shrimp Express, Bobs Shrimp in Hammond, and Simply Seafood in Merrillville up until recently we're owned by one person (Bob). Bob recently retired and sold all three. Each to 3 separate owners. Bobs used to be my favorite for 30 years. Now with a different owner I tried Jumbo Shrimp at Bobs twice and at Shrimp Express twice. Big difference. Shrimp Express is still serving true Huge Jumbo Shrimp. And on each occasion they were fried perfectly. Great non greasy crust. It's a different story at Bobs. Shrimp are not true jumbos but large shrimp, not nearly as big as the shrimp at Shrimp Express. Additionally on my second trip to Bobs the crust was mushy and oily. And they are more expensive than Shrimp Express. What a difference the owner makes. Congratulations to the new owner at Shrimp Empress, you've got great true jumbo shrimp. You have won my business. And to the new owner of Bobs., you can't fool the long term customers of Bobs. Please get your act together.

8-31-2022 visit. Had the Jumbos, which are really large with tons of coating to make them look larger. Still way too much hard very dry coating. Also shrimp tough and stringy,. I'm done wasting $23 bucks on garbage. From now on Im driving to Bobs...

I was passing by on my way to Indiana and I saw Shrimp Xpress and decided to stop by. The fried shrimp came in a paper bag with a tray and they were fresh, hot and delicious! They came with a nice tangy sauce, and I ordered a drink. My shrimp were great the texture was nice and they were not fried too hard and it had a nice batter. What you see photos of is one pound of delicious shrimp. It is an outdated drive thru, and you are ready to quickly pull out once you get your order. The staff was nice and friendly and my order was prepared in a reasonable amount of time. Some days this place accepts debit/credit and some days are cash only. Problem is you won't know until you actually drive up to the order station. Then, if you have no cash on these cash only days, you will have to drive thru Several towns to actually find a bank with an accessible working ATM... Even though there is a mall with several banks surrounding it right up the street. The young lady taking orders seems Very Irritated & bothered by customers. I'm assuming this is a family owned business & maybe that's why she can afford to be rude. Moral to the review... Nevermind we're in a pandemic... Be prepared to PAY with CASH!!!! Or go somewhere else. Such a shame too because the shrimp are really good But the customer service is TERRIBLE. ...
