First, let me say this is solely on the food served and not the service as this was takeout.
The food that was taken home was absolutely horrible. If there could be negative stars there would be. The food they sent us home with was disgusting, soggy, and tasted old. Ended up being thrown away and some items weren’t even tasted because of how bad the rest was. Being that both us of were having GI issues (cramping, vomiting, diarrhea) within 1-2 hours of eating that food I definitely think there was something messed up with that food. Idk who was in the kitchen on the night of April 7th 2024 but they need out. Which is unfortunate because I’ve had the food at this restaurant before and it was good so going back there I assumed would be the same. The worst was the quesabirria tacos which was all around horrible. That meat must be expired or something and that consome couldn’t have been fresh. The tortilla was so soggy and gross and tasty cooked with old oil on a dirty skillet or something. It’s hard to describe just how gross and how badly they ruined a great dish like quesabirria tacos this time. Whoever was in the kitchen this time needs kicked out and whoever was there a few weeks ago needs to be back in because if the person from this time is there all the time this place couldn’t possibly stay open with the terrible food they’re dishing out. 3 weeks ago the food was good enough to make me come back and this time it’s so bad that I never want to again and couldn’t confidently recommend this...
Read moreMy friends and I decided to try EL Viejon on a busy Saturday night, prepared for the usual weekend wait. To our surprise, we were greeted with a smile and immediately seated! We spotted a high-top table in the bar area and the host happily accommodated our request. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with traditional Mexican design elements like bright murals and just the right amount of lighting. It felt festive but not overwhelming. The menu was extensive, but we couldn't resist diving into the drink menu first. I opted for a peach margarita on the rocks, while my friends chose the coconut margaritas. All three were absolutely delicious – flavorful and perfectly mixed! For food, I went with the chicken burrito and two birria tacos. My friends also ordered the birria tacos, and we all agreed they were the best in town! The tacos were generously filled, and the consommé sauce was out of this world. Our server was fantastic, attentive, and always smiling. Their positive attitude added to the overall wonderful experience. We left feeling full, happy, and like we had just shared a meal with family. EL Viejon exceeded our expectations. It's a must-visit for anyone looking for delicious Mexican food, amazing drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere. We can't...
Read moreI was sad to see San Marcos leave as we have always had consistently good food and service from this location. When I heard another Mexican restaurant with more seafood options was going to come in as a replacement, I was elated! I am a proud Mexican American and a transplant from Texas, so I was super excited for another Mexican establishment with MORE seafood options! Unfortunately, every occasion I have frequented El Viejon, I have been left with nothing but regret and disappointment.
The food is subpar, the seafood isn't fresh, the enchiladas were literally the worst thing I have ever tasted, the tacos aren't up to snuff, and the tortillas were barely cooked. On top of the food woes, the service was also lackluster. I understand they are fairly new, and people are short-staffed, but at least re-fill or ask my table if we need a re-fill halfway through our lunch/dinner. I wasn't going to base my review solely on the service, but when you combine all of the other issues, it becomes apparent that this place needs a lot of work. Unfortunately, this will be my last visit to El Viejon, as I can either cook better quality at my abode or frequent a local taco truck that consistently pumps out exceptional quality food with exceedingly...
