Ortega's Mexican Bakery & Restaurant — Restaurant in Toms River

I am a Gringo, but kind of an expert with Mexican Food. And my Spouse is from Mexico.

I ate here for a late lunch Thursday, 10/24/24, around 3:30 p.m., it was my first visit back in over a year.

The food was good.

Pros: Server who stated she was the owner was attentive, friendly. Tortillas for tacos are made by hand, each had single tortillas. Salsas were very good, fresh tasting. 3 chicken tacos had a good amount of chicken.

Cons: Dining area is smaller and seating is outdated. Salsas could be a bit more spicy and chicken could be seasoned a little more. Price was average or slightly above average to similar restaurants. ( Other places give 4 tacos for similar price and or double tortillas.)

I would recommend this place for friends and family to give it a try, atleast...

Decided to give this place a try after being out all day. Our plan was to order, take out & head home. Door was open. It was very hot inside. No greeting as we approached counter. Some diners were at tables. We somewhat heard a woman complaining. We grabbed menus & read over them. Food sounded appealing & what we saw on tables looked very good, however we chose to leave without ordering after no acknowledgement & it being so uncomfortably hot in there. I dont know how anyone that was sitting at a table could enjoy a dinner in a place that hot. It appeared they had a portable AC unit hooked up in the corner. Called to place an order for pickup and had to repeat myself several times to correct her when she repeated things back to me. Got there to pick things up and was told they were out of two things we had ordered. Had to wait longer for the food than we were told on the phone despite the place being empty. Then we got the food and went out to the car where I checked everything because I felt like the bags didn't have enough in them. I was right. I had ordered four soft tacos and four hard tacos but instead received six soft tacos so one order was missing entirely and one order was wrong.
