Atmosphere/Service: When we first arrived, there were to younger men working the trailer, and an older gentleman off to the side, talking to what i assume was his friend, beside the only other vehicle there. I was excited to try the place after reading so many good reviews. I walked up and said, "I hear you got the best BBQ in Topeka!" One of the young men just muttered something I couldn't understand, and the other didn't look up from his phone. I then asked if there was a meal with 1 lb rib tips similar to the 1 lb of burnt ends. He said "No, but you can just order the sides on the side." I placed my order, asked how long they had been there, and he told me 4 years. This was the extent of the conversation. Not the most welcoming place I've been to, for sure
Food: We ordered one pound of rib tips and one pound of burnt ends. We ordered mac&cheese, baked beans, cheesy corn, and cheesy potatoes for sides. The burnt ends were kinda hit and miss. Some were good, but some were very tough hard to even chew. Overall, they were smoked nicely with good flavor. The rib tips were wonderful. (My personal favorite) The sides were not what I expected and were quite unique. The flavor was great, but you would think they would be larger when ordering them with a pound of meat. (Not nearly enough for the 4 people I was feeding.) (I would recommend doubling up on the sides if you're in a similar situation.)
Bottom line: Not the best experience, (they even forgot to include the baked beans!) however the food was of good quality. I don't like to give up on a place after one visit, and I'm willing to go back the next time I'm craving some rib tips. Maybe it was an off night, we were early in the dinner window, so maybe they weren't quite in rhythm yet. I will update...
Read moreThe food is AMAZING, but….
The service was a lacklustre. Avoided eye contact, had earbuds in their ears…
…they weren’t rude, per se, but come on, take the AirPods out of your ears, smile and look at me. One fellow with vitiligo looked absolutely terrified of me.
Like, am I that intimidating? Or did I pop by on a bad day?
I’m a Canadian roadtripper touring the USA, so I’m definitely not local, so that could be a factor…
…but a bump in friendlier, warmer interpersonal skills wouldn’t hurt.
ANYWAYS….
The aroma brought me to the food truck. I was on my way to a burger joint when I smelled the barbecue.
I would much rather patronize a local business over an international franchise, so…
I’ve had remarkable luck with local eateries…
…this was a fine culinary discovery.
The brisket was amazing. Tender, melted in your mouth. Perfectly seasoned.
The ribs were postcard perfect; tender with just the right amount of chewiness and texture. Outstanding.
Collard greens, I love this stuff. Just the right amount of seasoning, a gentle kick.
But the winner was the cheesy potato rice. Wow! New, yet familiar! Delicious!
So, the food is AMAZING. Good value for the money as I got plenty.
I’ll be coming for another visit Friday night. Take the AirPods out of your ears and be a bit warmer; I’m a friendly Canadian who means you no harm.
Maybe it was because I was hungry. Really, am I that...
Read moreWe got some food from Smokey Dunks today. We got some ribs and jerk chicken on rice plus some sides. Overall we were very pleased with the ribs and chicken. The jerk sauce was nice and spicy with a touch of sweetness and smokey Ness. The ribs were nice and tender and went great with the BBQ sauce. We also got cheesy taters and the Mac. The Mac was nice and creamy and went well with the ribs. Again we were very pleased with what we got especially for the price we paid. We plan on coming...
