While traveling to Buffalo in the cold month of February and in search of the best chicken wings, we were recommended to go to Bar-Bill Tavern in East Aurora, NY - just a 25 minute drive from downtown Buffalo, and predominantly an expressway jaunt. We entered the quaint town of East Aurora with the snow gently falling on the brick streets. Bar-Bill Tavern turned out to be an excellent choice. First of all, note well that Bar-Bill’s is a cash only affair- so plan accordingly. Since it was busy, we were seated immediately, and from my table I noticed that even though there was a line of people waiting, they still were seated quickly.
As our party of five sat down, we ordered pitchers of beer from a wide selection of suds. When it came to ordering wings, we chose to order a wide variety. Our choices were Cajun, Barbecue Cajun, Regular Buffalo Style, and our soon-to-be favorite- Sicilian, which were a $1 extra. We asked for all to be cooked extra-crispy and the result was excellent. The barbecue Cajun wings were a hit, the Cajun regular were very good, but the Sicilian struck a nice chord. The were not breaded, thank goodness, but were more like eating chicken Parmesan wings. They were smothered in sprinkles of Parmesan cheese and were full-flavored and not hot. We chose to get the regular Buffalo wings in the medium-hot range. The result was lip burning hot, but delicious. Unless you are a spicy-hot veteran, I would stick to the lower side of the hot spectrum. We got extra blue cheese which appeared to be homemade and tasted great. As usual in the Buffalo area- no one asked for Ranch dressing.
The tavern had an old time feel to it, with wooden floors and tables. The front room opened up to the front with large windows, which would be nice in summer. Other interesting menu items are available, but for us, this was a search for good wings. The trip to Bar-Bill Tavern would be a nice trip, not only for wings but also for an afternoon to explore the town of East Aurora. ...
Read moreWe were in Buffalo for the first time, so of course we had to try a few wing places out while in town. This was our third and last stop and definitely our favorite place!
We went for lunch and there was a bit of a wait, which we didn’t mind; it’s a very small place. The waitress was super quick and efficient. They were very busy but we never went without drinks or her just checking in us.
For the food, we ordered a mini beef on weck, which they cut in half for us to share and it came with au jus, chips, a pickle spear and horseradish. It was our second one to try and our favorite out of the two.
For the wings, we went with medium and Cajun honey butter BBQ. These wings were amazing! The medium didn’t have the normal taste of Franks that you typically get with hot wings, it actually tasted like a sauce that was an actual recipe. It had a lot of depth of flavor and the spice level was perfect for us, it even had a little sweetness to it that I ended up really liking.
The Cajun honey butter bbq were the star of the show, but only by a little bit. There’s so many flavors that all hit at different times and all work so well together. They were a little spicier than the medium because of the Cajun seasoning, but then the buttery taste and sweetness come through and it doesn’t even matter that they’re spicy and your nose is running, they’re addicting!
The fries were good, basic fries that were fresh and hot. I had an Irish red draught beer that was very good with the wings. I’m honestly sad that we don’t live close by or have a reason to visit Buffalo again, because I absolutely...
Read moreBack to BB EA August 2023 and still great! Wings seemed even larger. Got medium. Cooked perfectly. Crispy outside tender inside, very fresh. Wings stayed temp hot till the last one. You can see the steam from the wing after you bite in. No reheated wings here. Blue cheese dip at EA is better than Clarence. Two small quibbles, wings were not arranged perfectly in alignment by flats and drums; and chips with our beef on weck were mostly small bits of chips, crumbs, must of been the end of the bag. It was near full on a Tuesday well after lunch, 2ish. And lots of seniors too, they know where to get wings.
Update January 2020. Back to Bar Bill and again the wings are delicious. Got medium and medium hot. Medium is the sweet spot. Medium hot will tingle your lips and are a little dryer, slightly less juicy than medium. My company loved the beef on Weck.
March 2019. Wings how they should be. We got 10 medium and 10 honey bbq Cajun. Both were good but I preferred the medium. The wings are of superior quality. Good size , plump, lots of white meat, no broken bones, cooked to perfection. Crispy outside but not too crispy. Tender inside with meat that comes off easily. I usually dip, but they were so good they didn’t need any. Enjoy the dip with the celery. The sauce stays on the wings and is not a sloppy mess....
