Blue Tortilla Fresh Mexican Grille — Restaurant in Town of Brookhaven

I had come in the other night with my 3 boys & we went to the counter to order our dinner & met the nicest person Sebastian, his smile was warming & he was extremely polite . We asked a number of questions on each of the meals we were ordering & he took the time to explain each one to us.We told him it was our 1st time there & he promised it would not be our last. HE WAS CORRECT!!!Even after our meals were ordered & we were having dinner he asked if we liked all we ordered & I thought he was the owner of the place. He responded that he works there & takes to heart the effort he puts in to show each of his customers the attention they deserve. Sebastian was very professional in his conversation as well as his skills in how to show respect to his customers & I watched him interact this way with a number of clients who came in while my boys & I were enjoying the dinner Sebastian helped us pick put that evening. Sometimes in life you stumble across a Gem & we did in both the Blue Tortilla Restaurant & in Sebastian the person who was working that night & gave my boys the Mexican Dinner experience like no other. Since then my boys have been asking to go back to the restaurant where Sebastian works so they can enjoy dinner & talk to him about Mexican history & culture & what foods to order. The most impressive part is that while Sebastian knows his menu so well & is so well educated in the Mexican cuisine & history He is not even Mexican ! He is of Polish Descent & told us how he when getting this job took time to learn as much as he could because he takes pride in his work & who he works for. I used to love this place. I remember when it first opened. Massive burritos, fresh hot chips, and a salsa bar. Never had a bad meal. For years this place was the best in the area for cheap flavorful burritos and tacos.

Something terrible has happened. While back in town I got lunch here and it is nothing like the blue tortilla of years past. I ordered a steak fajita salad. It was almost inedible. First, they forgot the steak (which they/uber eats rectified with a refund, so that’s good). But even the fajita veggies were bad. They weren’t fresh, they were mushy and tasted like they had been sitting in a tub of oil and veggies all day. And the rest of the salad was just cheap flavorless iceberg lettuce. Even the guacamole lacked flavor. How do you mess up guacamole? It would have been better if it was just fresh sliced avocado, which tells me that they aren’t using fresh ingredients.

I tried a steak taco from another person in my order and that was decent but nothing to brag about. The steak lacked flavor. Another person in my order had a quesadilla and that looked ok. And the chips were good (and they gave us lots). And their house salsa was as good as I remember it, a delicious cold fire roasted tomato salsa that perfectly complements hot and salty tortilla chips. So maybe the menu is hit or miss. But this many things shouldn’t go wrong in simple cheap Mexican food.

Blue Tortilla needs to fix its kitchen. Use fresh ingredients. Use more seasoning. And don’t send out incomplete orders. I hope it does because this place used to be...

This is one of the better "hole in the wall" Mexican restaurants in the area. They do have about a dozen tables, but I have always taken the food away or had it delivered. I should warn you that they do get very busy at night and the line has been known to stretch out the door -- but this is because the food is so good and the line moves well.

I grew up eating Mexican food, and there is nothing particularly surprising about the menu. You'll find all the usual dishes and a few specialties (they offer shrimp as a filling option for tacos and burritos).

I like the Burrito Mucho (a foot long burrito) with grilled chicken. No matter how hungry I am, it always fills me up. I am also partial to the Jalapeno Poppers which have just the right amount of grease and crispiness.
