Checkmate Inn — Restaurant in Town of Brookhaven

If you want to spend a nice evening alone or with a company, never go to this bar!!! We have visited this bar twice with my wife and this was the worst bar we ever saw in our life. The beer is so-so, but the public really makes it feel like you stay at some inadequate bar with the average IQ level of visitors being at the level of 70 or less. Not to say that there are aggressive visitors as well. Actually the only reason why we went to this bar was b/c a friend of mine told us they have two dart sets, so while drinking beer you can play a bit :) But in reality it seems that there are the same people staying there all the time, so it's almost impossible to get ahead of them in playing darts. And even if you succeed then 5 minutes latter the bodyguard would come and ask to share darts with others even if you waited for half an hour before. Also there are not enough tables and chairs neither inside nor outside, so unless you are lucky you will end up staying in some corner and watching other drunk visitors playing endless darts. No Fun At All!

BTW last time the same stupid bodyguard told us we have to leave b/c some other people started pushing me. And at my explanation that we were merely sitting he told us it would be difficult to kick the other 10 people outside even if it is their fault, but it is easy for him kick the two of us out... VERY...

While I understand every bar has a right to refuse service to whomever they choose, I have been continuously disappointed by Checkmates hospitality towards my girlfriends and I. They refuse to accept out of state IDs and while I understand the motive , I urge them to reassess their vetting process as it is obvious that the majority of the population in checkmate are out of state New York underage people. Still, they make it a point to refuse any out of state IDs and fail to give adequate justification. My nine roommates and I carry a tribe among us- all of whom are 21+- and while we never wish to disparage local places, we have been continuously disappointed by the treatment as to which checkmate has provided us. I hope they reassess their vetting process to subscribe to what they say they preach; that being, letting in mature, of age people, who can handle themselves, instead of the fake underage tourists who claim to be of-age “New Yorkers”. Perhaps this will minimize the discrimination. Do better because we truly want to support you, but are sadly running out...

I have driven past this bar for almost my entire life and have always been very curious about it. I finally got around to checking it out last weekend and it was a pretty cool bar. The part that made it stand out to me was the darts! If you wait around long enough, people will give you a turn. There seemed to be a decent amount of older people here but there were also a few my age (22ish). It is a very small bar and you are even more tightly packed than a typical bar but the night I went it wasn't too bad. I sat around at the tables for a bit waiting for darts to free up and talked a bit with my friends. There was a large variety of music playing, from oldies to very current, it was a solid playlist. Overall, I would definitely visit again most likely some time in the summer because there is also a sitting...
