Island Lake Diner — Restaurant in Town of Brookhaven

July 2024 UPDATE I gave it some time, then tried them again. Now, they're one of my regular stops when I get takeout or enjoying a meal locally dining-in with friends. The service is much improved and the people are still very friendly and accommodating. The food is still very good. I'm so glad they're doing so well and have a wonderfully broad menu. If you're in the area, you won't regret stopping by for a meal. Original Review The food is very good, if you get to eat it while it's hot. Unfortunately, too many mistakes were made during my last visit to allow me to do that. We dined in, and even though it was a busy Sunday late morning, we were seated relatively quickly after a short wait. We had requested a table, not a booth (because I find booth seating uncomfortable), and they sat us at one of those "one side chairs/one side booth bench" tables despite it. As they were busy, we just took the table as they didn't have anywhere else to seat us when we politely reminded them. We had some questions about a few menu items so we couldn't order right away. Once we placed our order, especially with how busy they seemed, I don't feel the wait for our food was unreasonable. Unfortunately, not only was the food not hot (might've been waiting a bit to be served), we were missing some items when our orders arrived at the table. They were one pancake short on mine, forgot the home fries on the other, forgot our toast completely, we needed butter, and it was difficult to get our coffee refilled. While a server normally checks back shortly after the food is brought out, it took some time to flag ours down to let them know about the issues mentioned above. In that time, our meals were getting colder. I waited to show there was a pancake missing and because I like to eat my eggs with my toast. By time the corrections were made, my eggs were cold. We did mention our concerns but, we also told them we didn't want to make a big deal of it. I'm not reviewing to bash the place, quite the opposite. I like this diner and want to see them successful for a long time. I now know to be much more proactive in notifying staff of issues they can be reasonably expected to rectify. I thought it important for future guests to know not to be afraid of getting up to find a staff member if waiting will decrease your enjoyment of your dining experience. Had I just gotten up and walked to the server station rather than waiting to eventually catch someone as they were nearby, I might have been enjoying my food sooner. These are not deal-breaking issues, just the point where little mistakes resulted in a less than stellar experience. I really did love this place until I received my final doordash delivery this morning, from Island lake Diner. Ok i order some home fries, pancakes with sausage. Food was a liitle above cold regarding food temperature. They also give you syrup and jelly with ketchup and butter packets, here is where I ran into a bigger health concern. The smuckers strawberry packet I received was inside an already used strawberry packet. Another words someone used a packet and put a new packet ontop of used packet. Well lake diner sent the doubled up packet with all new packets. My wife called to advised them that we were unhappy that food was cold but the call was really just to let them know that they need to pay attention to what they are doing with food and condiments.So now the guy starts to yell at my wife which I think is wrong. We were not asking for refund or anything we just wanted them to be aware of the situation and pay attention. I would spend hundreds there especially since Covid and their food has been amazing. Especially the chicken with the stuffed crab filling but unfortunately this was the last time. Normally everything is great. I’ve orders multiple items from the menu with my wife and never have had an issue. Until today. Ordered Nachos (for delivery) and am very disappointed. Not leaving a review to bash but I want someone to see this and make an effort to do better. Nachos came in a big plastic salad bowl and was entirely filled with cheese, guacamole and everything it was supposed to be only is was a complete mess. Every nacho was soggy... too much of everything in the bowl. The cheese was light and airy like the cheese from the 7-11 cheese machine (not typical thick cheese for nachos) the guacamole was super thin and watery and mixing with the cheese making a cereal bowl of soggy chips with cheese and guacamole substituting milk. Tomatoes weren’t diced they were sliced into giant chunks. And everything was room temperature or below upon arrival. I would recommend using better ingredients next time and trying to compartmentalize the toppings on top of the nachos instead of just filling the bowl with cheese and guacamole. If you can’t pull this off then may I suggest just putting everything on the side as a standard for delivery for quality assurance sake so everyone has no one to blame but themselves for soggy chips.
