Brother Bruno’s Pizza Chester NY — Restaurant in Town of Chester

I don't leave negative reviews lightly and I would never want to intentionally hurt a small business. But maybe my review can save someone else from a terrible experience. I called a week in advance to ask this place if they could accommodate us for my son's birthday after seeing a movie next door. They said yes and I gave them the time we'd be there. Today was the day, and I went in to place the order before the movie and asked the guy working there if he could have the pizzas ready when we arrived (because we'd be coming with 13 hungry kids). He said yes, but added that if we arrived and the pizzas were cold, it wasn't his problem. That should've been my first clue in the lack of customer service.

We arrived after the movie when I said we would and he hadn't even started our order. The waitress came over and got us pitchers of water and said the guy at the front (who I assume is the manager) asked us to make sure the kids are quiet. Who says that? This is a neighborhood pizza joint, not a 5 star restaurant. Besides, the kids were being surprisingly quiet for a group of 13 kids. A few minutes later, the waitress came back and said the manager wanted to speak to me- he proceeds to tell me that the kids need to quiet down and we can't use any more chairs than we asked for. He says "this is why I don't do parties, kids are too loud and messy." Then why did you agree to serve us when I checked not once, but twice? Granted, we'd been there about 5 minutes and hadn't even eaten yet. This guy clearly doesn't want families eating here and if that's the case, you should put a "kids aren't welcome here" sign in the front and see how long you stay in business.

We were obviously not welcomed, so we left and went to Wendy's where the kids could be kids and receive quick service. I will never return here and I'll be spreading the word to everyone I know that they should spend their money on other local pizza places who treat customers with respect and decency. If you have kids or are with a group, do not go to this place. We had an absolutely horrible experience. We stopped by after a soccer game with a group of well-behaved 13-14-year-old girls from our academy—nothing like the chaotic “kids’ party” they seemed to assume we were bringing. Before going, I even called to ask if they could accommodate us, and the man who answered rudely said, “No, I don’t host kids’ parties,” in the nastiest tone. I explained that it wasn’t a party, just a team wanting to grab pizza after a game. He clearly didn’t care.

Despite the initial phone call, we decided to give them a chance since our group was smaller than expected (around 15-20 people instead of 30). When we arrived, the restaurant was EMPTY. The waitress was nice at first and began taking our order, but then informed us we could only use a certain number of tables—despite there being plenty of available space. We weren’t planning to take over the restaurant or stay for hours—just have some pizza and leave.

Soon after, her attitude changed, becoming unpleasant and dismissive. We were told that if we had kids, they couldn’t be loud or make a mess. What kind of comment is that? That’s when we decided to leave. As an academy, we weren’t going to tolerate such treatment. It’s clear this place is not family-friendly and doesn’t welcome groups with kids.

Brother Bruno Chester was sold recently, and all the good reasons that I went there are gone. I loved the pizza and the meals were good too. Yesterday I tried to slices of their pizza and the crust was so soggy but it didn’t hold up the cheese or the sausage. I’ve change the sauce is in the seasonings so nothing taste familiar and I really don’t like the food now. I’ve never written a review like this before. It’s a shame they didn’t keep some of the recipes that were such a success. Grandma’s pizza is totally different now… The sauces and the seasonings are not appealing to me. The crust around the edges was hard as a rock and hard to bite but the underneath part was soggy and again the slice collapsed due to sogginess causing the sauce and cheese to fall on my clothes. I want to say thank you to Phil and those who have been proffesiinal and kind through the years. I’ve been going there since my children were young and they are in their early 40’s now. Other Brunos was our go to place when they came to town from Massachusetts and Connecticut. Sorry to say we won’t be going there anymore. I do like Brother Bruno’s in Middletown on Dolson Avenue which still has the familiar foods that we’ve loved for years.
