Overall DOWNGRADED...quality of fish (most specifically) & cooked dishes, in-house service, & let's not forget the customer service by the front desk girls
Service in-house is sub-par..This is actually the reason why my family and I started to place our orders "to go". Recently however, for our take-out orders, the attitudes of the front desk ladies really make for a wonderful dining experience! With their short-attention spans, re-reading the order 3-4x and overall short temperament (ESP if they cannot hear you the first attempt). Not to mention they speak English relatively well.
NOTE TO CUSTOMERS:
GOD HELP YOU IF YOU ARE TRYING TO USE A COUPON!!! Which THEY place on their to-go menu's and also send these discount coupons to local surrounding addresses. $5.00 off $30.00 & $10.00 off $70.00. Please be reminded as it DOESN'T SAY ON THE COUPON..To reach the $30.00 or $70.00 discount, the "tax" is not included in your total. Little false advertising scheme to make you order that extra $5-$8 dollar roll to get over the heap ;-)
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU GET YOUR DISCOUNT!!! EATING IN and OUT!! Don't let Tanya tell you otherwise!
Here's a brief over-view, because boy was this my favorite SUSHI spot in Southern Westchester since they opened approximately 3 years ago...
Since they have opened my family alone has spent collectively between $5K-6K MINIMUM. We eat sushi 3x a week religiously, (it might be a bad habit BUT it's what myself and the kids enjoy) Especially for a nice healthy, quick, take out snack! Hey- you can't go wrong with fish and rice right?! Well at Kumo..now you can!
Haiku is up the street which matches in ambiance (not quality) and much better service. There is (all you can eat) Sushi-Castle less than a mile away (all you can eat for a reason). Scarsdale Village has Kirari, KoKo and Shoyu as well. Don't settle.
The lunch specials (decent for the price) HOWEVER, they forget to mention they are approximately HALF the size of the regular menu. If you ASK they will tell you though!! On a Friday/Saturday night over a year ago you would find a decent crowd at the bar, not anymore. I have many friends and family that share the same opinion on this place and little unbeknownst word travels fast!
There has been 5-6 occasions where they closed early during the week with no explanation as it doesn't make sense for them to stay open. If you try to place an order 45-50 minutes before closing you have a 20% chance Sunday-Thursday of getting it in. Closing is 10pm and therefore you should be able to leave an order until 10pm PERIOD.
They absolutely DOWN-GRADED their fish over the past few months. The off-set color, size, texture & temperature lately has been the demise. The past 3 orders have upset/rumbled our stomachs, made us flush in the face, increased my body temperature and we felt uneasy finishing our meals. Tonight I had to give them one last shot and this was the final LET DOWN. What a waste of $40,00 dollars, time, mileage/gas picking up our order and our Friday night. 2/7 rolls we ordered were great. I'm sorry I don't order to get 30% of my order ON POINT. This has consistently been STANDARD across the board my last 6-7 orders with them and like many others our time with them is over.
I have lived in the area for over 23 years and have an excellent savor for SUSHI, specifically SUSHI. I used to assess/appraise sushi restaurants in the best college towns in the country while in college. Thereafter, I evaluated the "top 10 all you can eat" sushi places in NYC and the "top 10 premier sushi restaurants" from the upper east/west side to downtown Manhattan. I have been showcased and premiered on many famous sites/blogs for my knowledge/experience in the sushi arena. I am (among many) considered the Sushi King of the NorthEast. I know..quiet strange but I appreciate the accolades :)
Make sure you are getting the QUALITY/SERVICE you deserve and make sure your food is worthy of what you pay for it. You deserve to know and deserve the best quality and care.
Life is short, make good...
Read moreI would have given 4 stars for the food alone BUT the following comments explain why not.
Besides the food, which isn't bad at all - the joke here is that the entire staff are Chinese and have no clue about Japanese dining culture (I speak as one who has lived in Japan) - so much for their "inspired by traditional Japanese culture" as explained on the website. My sushi counter experience was seriously marred by the language barrier - I've lived in Japan and it's customary to ask the sushi chef what's the freshest fish or specialty of the day and what would he recommend? The sushi chefs don't answer but motioned to the waitress- who again apparently couldn't grasp my questions - I gave up and ordered straight from the menu - which worked out well. Sushi deluxe with an extra order of uni and quail egg and the crunchy avocado roll However my dear waitress, who constantly reached across from behind me to take the delivery food orders from the chefs - and managed to stick her armpit into my face without hesitation each time without an "excuse-me" or warning, sadly had bad body odor and her armpit brushed my face several times as she was small - in the end this was so bad and off-putting that I decided I had to tell the manager that this was unacceptable.
Also the waitresses aggressively pour a full deep dish of soy sauce into your wasabi bowl without explanation, any time they bring a sushi order to you- maybe they assume you need this directive? Finally I was summarily brought my check without requesting it, seemingly in the middle of my dinner? Why? No explanation at all.
When I left, I respectfully explained to the manager that this was my first time and these otherwise inconsistent issues (which once ironed out would greatly enhance the dining experience) surely could only help her team. She could only say "I'm glad you enjoyed our sushi". I trust they might learn from genuine customers issues. And finally I did enjoy the sushi, especially the Kumamoto Oysters. The armpit BO was a total turn off. And so funny in hindsight that I have to mention it so other sushi counter...
Read more2nd time here (we live about 1/2 hour away), wish we were closer, we'd eat here all the time. beautiful decor, excellent and super efficient, attentive, and friendly service (friday lunch time, and they were busy), even a complimentary bowl of hot edamame (and an extra bottle of sake and even desert! but I think they did that just for us). everything was really tasty and flavorful, and some seafood you don't see often, like live scallop and sayori, which was not only a beautiful presentation of the whole fish, but the flesh nicely slivered and the skeleton deep fried, and was entirely edible (and very tasty!). other sashimi pieces that were all very fresh and good, and even fresh (real) wasabi with everything, not the fake powdered stuff, it's really good. only thing we were less than happy with was the appetizers, one of fried rice cubes with a side of chopped salmon and a dab of lime avacado, the other was chopped tuna on top of chopped avocado. while both were decent tasting, they were both very simple, with no extra toppings or ingredients, very uninspired...would not order those again because of this (and the too-high price for such simple dishes). pork buns were good, but again, $8 for only 2, not worth it. we are not averse to paying top dollar for good food, but these simple appetizers did not warrant the price. just wish they added something extra, say, something crunchy, or maybe tobiko, or thinly sliced jalapeno, or extra sauces, etc. chefs please take note and make adjustments, we would love to try other appetizers! (I'd give a 4.5 review if I could, I'd only knock off 1/2 a star for the simple appetizers).
but would definitly come back again, for the great sushi...
