I grew up in Appleton and now live out of state, but return to attend Packer games with family and friends. I remember going to supper clubs and loved the whole atmosphere, as well as the food. I had never been to Dick and Joan's, but read the reviews and thought it would be a safe choice to give my other half his first supper club experience. For years, he's heard me rave about a good, midwestern steak and after 4 hours of traveling, we were hungry and ready to take in the supper club experience. We drove past the restaurant, as it was very dark outside and the establishment is not well lit. The entrance is in the back of the building, which was interesting. When we walked in, we looked for a hostess station, unable to find one. We had to track down a server to ask how to check in, and were told to sit at the bar. We sat at the bar for quite a while before anyone acknowledged us. Finally someone came over and handed us menus. We were so confused after we were told someone would come by to take our order and we would be seated when our order was ready. What? ! We live in a large metropolitan area out of state and this was unlike any restaurant experience we've ever had. This should have been our sign to leave..... but, unfortunately, we didn't. While we waited at the bar to be seated, we watched the older lady behind the bar cash out patrons, lick her fingers to count money, then proceeded to restock unwrapped straws into the straw containers around the bar. She did not wash nor sanitize her hands. All we could think about is the filthy money on her hands and her saliva, now contaminating every straw being used at the bar. Disgusting! Again.... another sign we should have left. When our food arrived, the steak that was ordered medium rare was BLUE and cold inside. It was inedible and sent back. The server brought out another one and that one was also very rare. She could see the frustration on our faces and offered to throw it back on. We decided to eat around the edges and just end this miserable experience. ANYTHING in Appleton would have been better than this food...
Read moreThis is the most unorganized restaurant I've ever been to. I shouldn't have to walk all the way through the restaurant to see a sign that says to be seated talk to the bar. The bartenders are nice, but short and sweet as they are busy. Never asked us if we have been there before or explained the process even after we had mentioned it's our first time. Fun fact also, no free soda refills. I guess there's also a credit card fee - which would've been nice to know ahead of time. After getting drinks and menus a server came over after now 10 minutes of being here. Let us know that it should only be about a 30 minute wait or so. We sat there patiently (as it's Friday) excited to try a new place. We saw people come in after us and get seated before us and bartenders catered to regulars more. After an hour wait even the bartender was questioning why weren't sat yet. We were ready just to walk out and the server finally came and got us. Upon walking in back there were other tables open (not just ours). Seems like our server forgot about us and kept taking tables. Food could have been better for price. I'm sorry but the Tenderloin is not a Tenderloin it's more of a sirloin. It was charred on top which shouldn't be unless asked. Was a little well done than liked. The perch tasted like perch anywhere else nothing special. Hardly any side choices for the meal and fries were the cheap crinkle fries no seasoning either. All in all for a 30$ dinner I would have expected at least decent tasting food but here we are. The food just seemed really cheap. I find it amazing how this is the first supper club I've been to where you can't eat at the bar. If you're that busy you can get more people taken care of faster and happier customers. Maybe get a door greeter or a host stand that can better assist customers as they walk in. As my husband had found this place due to a recommendation, maybe you should take a note from all the negative reviews and better your restaurant and maybe you'd get even more regulars and new...
Read moreThey were fairly busy for 6pm on a Tuesday but the wait was pleasant. Place is nice and clean and doesn’t smell musty or dirty like some supper clubs can. The bar area is spacious to wait either at the bar or in some small lower tables.
We came for the salad bar and were a bit underwhelmed. It says Fridays have a limited salad bar and if you asked me what that looked like tonight’s is what I’d say. Lettuce, a few standard veggie toppings, your usual dressings, croutons. Missing things like pickles, carrots, corn or peas, three bean salad, cottage cheese. But it was all fresh and crisp and had the most important things for a supper club: cheese and liver spreads with crackers and hot bacon dressing. They also have two soups nightly, lasagna (flavorful and not sweet like some places) and ham and potato (perfectly thickened but not like glue and not too salty).
I love that they have perch every night. I was a bit skeptical on all the combos being with tenderloin because I don’t like that cut but it was tender yet not mush, perfectly charred and crusty outside but a spot-on medium rare almost to the rare side. Seasoned well and made me a believer in tenderloin. The perch was some of the best I’ve ever had. Large. Moist fillets and cooked to perfection so it was crispy cracker crumb outside but moist and flaky inside. The broasted chicken was crispy and juicy but a bit salty for my taste. Potato puffs were a fun take on potato sides and well seasoned.
Ambiance is what you’d expect, dark wood and “homey” ambiance. Waitresses are fairly attentive and get the job done. It’s also absurdly affordable, we paid more for a burger lunch earlier that day and here we even...
