When I walked into the restaurant, I realized this was the kind of place that I wanted to be a part of. The owner was friendly and answered my questions thoroughly. My friend and I decided to try the Our Delight Combo for two. we were told that it would be about a 10 minute wait because they cook the food to order, so we were excited about the prospect of really fresh food. Then came the surprise at the time of checkout. We were charged a $7 upcharge due to the increased cost of the meat. I had anticipated a $2 or $3 up charge based on the sign that was next to the register period I asked the owner why my charge was $7 and he said that it is indicated on the website that all combo platters have a $7 upcharge. I am a big believer in supporting local small business, so I took him at his word, paid for the dinner, gave a tip for the staff, and went home. I checked on the website and found no mention of the $7 upcharge for combo platters (see attached screenshot), which was a real disappointment because I believed the owner. So that was the first major disappointment. The second major disappointment was in the taste and freshness of the food. The chicken was clearly frozen and somewhat overcooked, as it was incredibly dry. The next disappointment was with the hummus. The hummus was actually quite tasty, but we got four half pitas to go with a large serving of hummus. I found it unacceptable to give such a skimpy portion of pita for a $62 dinner. Another disappointment was with the kibbie and the spinach pie - both were dried out and inedible. The final disappointment was that they were out of tabbouleh for the day. I had requested that they substitute it with baba ganouj, but they instead gave me a Mediterranean salad. Overall, this was an incredibly disappointing experience. I was really excited to try this place based on the reviews, and I am really disappointed because the owner is someone that you want to like. I don't mind paying an upcharge when expenses are high in order to help keep a local small business in business, but I find it dishonest to tell a customer that an explanation is on the website when it clearly is not. In the spirit of giving an honest and well-rounded review, I will admit that the lamb was quite tasty and moist. Had the rest of the dish been cooked to same standard, this would have been more than a...
Read moreI had great expectations based on previous reviews and I really wanted to love the food . I ordered chicken shawarma , which I normally love . That was a major disappointment and that would be an understatement . The chicken was dry and had no taste to it rice was bland at best and the white sauce that’s normally full of flavor tasted like mayo squeezed out of the tube . My twin girls who love middle eastern food wanted no part of it and I had to make a substitute dinner for them .I am all for supporting local businesses and have bought food from many restaurants in Irvington and we always loved it . My husband said his gyro was ok . I will definitely not order from them again . I rarely write reviews , but I just couldn’t fathom how someone could serve such dry and almost inedible food at such high prices , especially in such difficult times . I gave 2 stars for a quick order prep . The...
Read morePerhaps the single greatest indicator of integrity - for both individuals and institutions, and one that is all too rarely demonstrated these days - is the capacity to recognize a mistake and make good on it. I found myself on the receiving end of a (rare) culinary error made by Irvington Delight and one that left a bad taste on several levels. I checked out the place's online reviews and concluded mine may have been an outlier situation. My next step was to speak with the owner. Yes, he restated what I had already read online, but rather than challenge my assessment, prepared a chicken with garlic sauce over veggies and rice with falafel and grape leaves on the side platter that my wife and I are still raving about. (I'm not even sure if it's on the menu, but I sure hope we can order it again.) Talk about turning a potential problem into a major advantage! We're hooked on...
