Overall, this is a great option for affordable sushi/sashimi (at $3.85 per plate) with friendly service staff and I look forward to Kura Sushi becoming a neighborhood fixture for an exciting dining experience. There was no wait time when we arrived around 6pm on a Monday, but it quickly became crowded by 7-7:30pm, so I would recommend going earlier. The seating space was smaller than I expected (with a mix of booth seats for four+ and rows with single seats), so there might be longer wait times if you go later in the evening.
Soy sauce, wasabi, and ginger are all provided on the table. The plates on the revolving belt are all priced at $3.85 and range from 1-4 items on each plate. For instance, toro and uni (sea urchin) each had one piece on the plate, while seared salmon with Japanese mayo had two pieces. The Philadelphia Roll had three pieces but the kappa maki (cucumber roll) had 4 pieces. There are also hot menu items available, with a reasonable price range of $9.30 (teriyaki chicken) -$11.80 (ten jyutempura box with rice).
Regarding the food, many items were delicious and fresh. Notably, we enjoyed the ten jyu with its crispy shrimp and lightly battered chicken. Additionally, any sashimi was cut generously and had a good mouthfeel. The warabimochi (mochi jelly with soybean powder) was delightfully springy, smooth, and sweet, and it tasted just like the ones we had back in Japan. However, we would not recommend the tonkotsu ramen. While the noodles had a lovely chewy texture and the egg was cooked to perfection, this could not make up for the unusually light taste of the soup where the oils were separated from the water as well as the overly fatty chashu. The general taste of sushi and sashimi was also, unfortunately, rather average. One big disadvantage was that the rice tended to come apart from the items on top (such as the fish or tamago/egg) which made each plate less cohesive as a whole.
Kura Sushi has a rather novel (to the U.S.) feature where you slide your plates into a slot at the table which will then register on the screen how many plates you have eaten. Every 5 plates will trigger a cute animation and you get a guaranteed capsule prize every 15 plates. The current prizes are keychains and stickers featuring characters from Dragon Ball Z. Another cool feature is how all hot food or special order items are delivered (slid) directly to your table via a belt above the revolving one.
All these features were explained to us by a staff member once we were seated, including how to use the screen to order and how to properly take a plate off the revolving bar. We like how hygienic the restaurant is where there is a lid over any plate revolving around to protect the items inside. All staff were very professional and thoughtful. We experienced an issue with our food but it was resolved quickly, and we felt our concerns were both heard and acknowledged.
With such wonderful and attentive staff, I am sure that the food quality and wait times will stabilize as the restaurant is open longer. They're doing a wonderful job so far, especially in opening while there's still construction blocking their front entrance. I plan to return and I am hopeful that, in time, Kura Sushi will become a solid...
Read moreSo you’re looking for sushi in Scarsdale that’s in a fun environment and anime-centric - pay yourself a visit to Kura Revolving Sushi Bar. Upon arrival, you’ll most likely walk in and try to be seated. Make sure you don’t ignore the iPad outside the door and use it to join the waitlist. If you have a long wait, the shopping center has good stores to kill some time in. If you get caught in the rain, make sure you use the under pass or umbrella’d seats right in front of the restaurant. Once you’re on the waitlist, pay attention to your phone and sit closer to the door when you receive the “your table is almost ready” text. I visited on the weekend around 3pm and had a 15 minute wait which was much faster. Shortly after receiving the message, the host will come to the door and call your name and confirm your party size. You’re escorted to your table as the staff greets you in Japanese which is pretty cool. You sit in these bays of seats in between revolving sushi conveyor belts. As you sit down, the experience is a bit confusing but you get the hang of it when you realize you’re starving! So there’s a screen above the conveyor belt that you can use to scan a QR code that opens up the restaurants entire menu except drinks. We made the mistake of ordering tons of nigiri and hot food without this critical step but don’t fret, order your drinks off the screen above the conveyor belt and they’re delivered via robot! Note that water is free but all other drinks have a cost. Now onto the food, pictured nigiri is the Garlic Stripejack Tuna, Seared Scallop with Japanese Mayo, Sea Bream with Yuzu Pepper, Salmon Toro, Toro and Tamago (my personal favorite dessert). Pictured roll is the Real Crab California Roll. Pictured ramen is the Tonkotsu. Pictured dessert is the Gum Gum Fruit Ice Cream. Think of this as a taiyaki ice cream with a purple wafer and vanilla ice cream on the inside. Now my personal favorites and must haves are the Garlic Stripejack Tuna, Sea Bream with Yuzu Pepper, Seared Scallop Japanese Mayo, and Tonkotsu Ramen. I ordered multiple orders of the Garlic Stripejack Tuna as it’s addictive (see four dishes pictured). All the sushi was super fresh and tasted great. As you eat, you are also tempted with the conveyor belt offerings which are the same menu items. We fortunately ordered everything using the online ordering system and it all arrived above the main conveyor belt with the screen notifying you that your dish is ready which is pretty helpful. During my visit, they promo’d a One Piece tumbler for $16 that’s includes unlimited refills through 9/30 and even a cooling towel for all purchases over $80. Two completely thoughtful commemorative items that make me want to go back. Give or take 17 plates later, we were absolutely satisfied with our meal and Kura swag. Some of the items I want to try next are the hand rolls and hot dishes which looked great. As I said, you want great sushi and a fun time with friends, Kura is the...
Read moreHi! On 9-1-24, my family and I went to dine in at the Yonkers location to celebrate the One Piece theme that’s going on. This is my second time visiting the location. My first time was in early August when the One Piece theme started. I only went in to purchase the One Piece Cups. I have never been to Kura before so Victor and Minsa gave me a run down and how everything works in a Revolving Restaurant. I also loved how friendly and kind they were towards me. Because of the good service, I told them I will be back and so I did which was today on 9-1-24. I received possibly the best experience I have ever had while dining in any restaurant. First off, I am allergic to seafood. I went thru 3 waiters “Victor, Minsa and Destiny” each h shared their own knowledge on the products and how things work (great job by the way. They know their store!) but I needed to be 100 percent sure that I wouldn’t be consuming anything with seafood so I kept on asking questions and more questions. The staff took it upon themselves to bring me out a manager/chef I believe he was a chef. His name is Ray. Ray explained to me how the food is prepped in the kitchen and what was my best choices to avoid any cross contamination and so my sister and I went with the Roman bowl which by the way was the best Roman I have ever tasted !! Needless to say, everthing was great. Destiny came to check on me after returning from her break to make sure I was ok due to me being a little nervous at first about eating. Victor and Minsa visted my table constantly to make sure everything was smooth. I just really appreciated how well everyone took care of me and accommodated my special need. Not one time did I feel disrespected or as if I was being annoying with what I was inquiring about. Everyone was so patient with me and didn’t give up ! I will definitely be dining in more often even after the One Piece theme is over. It was refreshing just to have the experience I did at Kura. Not many places care anymore and the staff is usually in bad moods. Great job Destiny, Victor. Ray and Minsa! I...
