My husband and I have been promising our best friends dinner at The Cottage by Colbeh, 1 The Intervale in Roslyn. We finally took them out last Thursday, 1/26/23. We were quickly seated but noticed there were several big screen TV’s with basketball games on. My girlfriend made a comment that we were supposed to be in a classy restaurant with linen tablecloths and napkins, silverware and San Pellegrino Italian sparkling water on every table. It totally felt more like a sports bar. We called over who we believed was the manager and asked him to please turn off the huge big screen TV right that was right “on top” of our table. He annoyingly said to her “that it would ruin the ambiance if we were to turn off the television”. With a snarky tone in his voice, like she was a spoiled child, he chided my friend with “Maybe someone else would like to watch even if you don’t want to!” There were only two other tables seated and neither was facing the TV close to us! That was only the beginning…
We ordered a rather inexpensive Baron Herzog Chenin Blanc for $30 (it sells for $6.99 a bottle at Total Wine and for 6 bottles or more, the cost is $6.29 a bottle). Though we knew we were being way overcharged for the wine, my husband and friends did enjoy the wine.
We then ordered a hummus appetizer which was creamy, smooth and delicious with the warm Persian bread it was served with. It was great until I pulled out a long blonde hair from my mouth and no one at our table had blonde hair! My friend handed me a paper napkin she had in her handbag because I got sick to my stomach. That was the end of me eating the hummus.
The three of us ordered bone in chicken kabobs; my husband ordered the lamb kabob. We were told the orange rice was extra but we ordered it anyway. Our plates came out and the kabobs were quite good but, yet again and without telling me, my husband pulled a long hair out of his orange rice. He didn’t want to upset me or stop me from eating my meal. I did stop eating my meal though. Everyone at the table agreed that the orange rice was too bitter because there was way too much orange pith in the rice! My friends had their son’s bar mitzvah at Colbeh nine years ago and their daughter’s bat mitzvah there six years ago and we’d ordered take out from The Cottage. We’ve always been very pleased with their food. That night was a huge disappointment from the “manager’s” attitude with us, to the hairs in our food to the large amounts of bitter pith in the orange rice. In addition, my husband spent nearly $300 that night to take our dear friends out only to be disgusted and embarrassed. My friend said she’s never had an issue with Colbeh in Great Neck. I strongly recommend that you do not eat at The Cottage by Colbeh in...
Read moreWe needed platted 2 kosher meals double wrapped in aluminum foil b/c we needed them for a party at a non kosher venue. I was told this was not a problem. We ordered a rib steak medium and a prime rib eye medium well. When I picked it up, there were two gigantic tins and two smaller tins. There were some small plastic containers of vegetables and they said it was complementary. They threw in some plastic plates and flimsy utensils. I had no time to do anything about it because I was going to be late to bring the food.
When we opened the tins at the restaurant, the large tins contained the steak with extremely soggy fries and the tomato. The smaller tins contained sides that we did not order. The worst of it was that it gave us two rib steaks, both of which were extremely overdone. Speaking for myself, mine had absolutely hardly any flavor to it.
I will however give them credit that it was a hefty serving of fries. I had also ordered an appetizer of Moroccan cigars that was...
Read moreLove coming to Colbeh for their delicious food. They serve large portions and everything is always cooked to perfection. They start with a plate of flat bread with some pickled cabbage and peppers and rice with lentils . For a group of 6 we got 4 appetizers including the babaganoush which is so creamy, the morraccan cigars-a group favorite (meat eggroll fried to perfection), the hearts of palm salad and stuffed grape leaves. We then got kebab koobihed white which is ground chicken skewers paired with the green dill rice, the kebab sultani (prime beef and ground beef skewers) paired with the sweet orange rice and lastly the kebab barg of prime beef skewers paired with white rice. The prime beef was juicy, grilled perfectly and just melted in your mouth. Dessert was shared among the group including lava cake, dulce de Leche and chocolate moose. Prices are reasonable/cheap considering the portions and the servers are attentive. They also have...
