I know the following review will likely offend some of my friends who spend $$$ at other Chinese food restaurants in the area- but Golden Wok is the best Chinese Food Restaurant in the area. It is inexpensive and dive-looking. So it is easy to expect typical oily, sugary msg american Chinese food. But that would be a grave mistake. This place is more akin to a spot in Chinatown. The food is super clean- no MSG or bad oil. The vegetables are always fresh. They make baby bokchoi and softshell crab in season. The chef is a real chef who takes great pride in his kitchen. Love general taos but hate 'breaded chicken'? This is the place to go. They make non-breaded versions of your favorites. But unique to Golden Wok, you can try a great variety of traditional Cantonese dishes. Would it be 5 stars in NYC? Come on. But I have found any place that beats Golden Wok between Westchester and Albany- not at any price point. And for the price point at Golden Wok, I will give it 5-stars all day long. Also, the owner who runs the register and takes the order might seem a little gruff at times- she is truly a sweetheart- but she does the work of three people and is usually sticking to business. If you catch them in a lul you will get to see her sweetness and maybe her husband (the chef) will come out and greet you. This place is a hidden gem in plane sight for the Red Hook / Rhinebeck area. The fried rice had snow peas, reg peas, onion and huge stalks of broccoli as you'd find in a side order of broccoli. No sprouts. We needed a knife. The eggplant in garlic sauce was bland and so over cooked that you could not keep the eggplant on any utensil.
The only saving grace was the Shrimp Mei Fun REALLY good and proof I wasn't crazy: this used to be a great little restaurant.
This was a take out order but NOTHING was included in the bag except fortune cookies. The cashier told me to grab packs of sauces but didn't mention she hadn't incl napkins utensils or paper plates as the quart sized orders were clearly for sharing. So the carefree take out dinner ended with a sink full of dishes.
Other pluses are easy to find parking and even though they have cut back their hours they are still open later than most restaurants...
Read moreThe attitude at the front desk was extremely poor and it was really bad. When I arrived at the store today, the front desk directly ordered the food at the door. I didn’t ask if I was going to pack it or eat it at the store. I think it may be because people have no seats, they just finished buying the order and then stood at the door and waited for the seat. After waiting for a long time, the people I came later were also arranged to sit down. I think it must be wrong. I asked the front desk. I also eat at the restaurant. Why didn't I have a seat? Then I was very impatient and said, "You didn't say it, then don't you click here?!" Then gave it to me. A huge white eye. If it weren't for your two-second long white eye, I wouldn't write this bad review. The food in the store is very good, the other waiters are also very good, I am also a frequent visitor, but in the future, my friends and I will...
