Sakimura Hibachi and Asian Fusion — Restaurant in Town of Ulster

I had such high hopes based on reviews I’ve read. We came here for my husband’s birthday tonight and we were terribly disappointed in the service. Our plates were dirty and greasy when we sat down and my drink had something green (veg?) that I picked out twice. Unfortunately I didn’t see it in my glass until the end of our meal. We were asked if anyone had a birthday and we said it was my husband’s, but I’m not sure why they asked as there was no birthday celebration or anything.

The chef was nice enough, but not very engaged and didn’t tell us he was about to shoot sake into people’s mouths before trying to do it. Not everyone in our party was aware this was something to expect and some would have appreciated knowing what was in the bottle before having it shot into their mouths, or not being pressured to partake when they said no thanks the first time. The chef forgot to serve rice to one of us and had someone bring out a bowl of rice that wasn’t fried like everyone else’s.

The absolute worst part was our server. He was rude as soon as we sat down. One person had a question about their soups and was immediately snapped at that he needs to order before he could ask a question about the soup. We ended up paying for an extra soup. The server wouldn’t answer questions about what was in a roll that was ordered for one of the kids with us. He dropped off the check and came back no less than 3 times in 5 minutes for it. He stood by the front desk watching and waiting for me to sign it. There were no people waiting for our table (half the hibachi tables were empty) and we would have understood somewhat if they were busy and needed our table. They tried to clear our plates multiple times while we were still eating and we were never offered a chance to order dessert. They also charge for refills on fountain drinks (club soda) which was a little surprising.

My review on the food is beyond 5 stars and it was delicious but if I could give a negative stars for the service I would. We initially got there as a group of 6 for 5pm some of us arrived at 4:30-4:45 looking to possibly get a seat at a bar the gentlemen seating us initially told us we were too early to be seated which is understandable but as for the bar we were unable to be seated. Once we were seated at the hibachi table 2 of the people within our reservation arrived 7 minutes late and with that is where my complaint begins once everyone was seated the gentlemen that seated us was starting to take our drink order and said to the group “we have to hurry up because some of your reservation was late” so at that point I was kind of annoyed but as the night went on we were served our delicious food but directly after our food was served we were asked by the same gentleman if we wanted to go boxes and then approximately 10 minutes later our check was brought out. Our total time being there was one hour and we didn’t even finish eating because at that point we were annoyed with the service and felt rushed not to mention we were never asked if we wanted any dessert, appetizers or just overall anything extra such as sauces etc. I’m really disappointed in this restaurant as for their service but AGAIN the food was great which is unfortunate because I won’t be going back we were looking for an enjoyable experience that turned out to be horrible and...

I absolutely love this restaurant! I’ve now been here twice since they opened and honestly it is just amazing. Tonight we came in earlier (5pm), and it being a Thursday I was fully prepared for the hostess to give us the frustrated sigh. It was only my son (10yro) and I and the hibachi tables were completely empty. She was so friendly I was completely taken off guard. They sat us immediately and I told the waiter I was more than happy to wait a bit to see if anyone else came so they could actually fill the table. He assured me it was not a problem and took our order. My shrimp and scallops and my son’s steak were perfectly cooked. The chef was enthusiastic and engaging despite it being only the two of us. Portions are really what I would expect for the price and I was pleasantly surprised. The previous hibachi place in this location has very similar prices but much smaller portions.
