Staff here are incredibly rude.
EDITED to respond to the response below.
Respectfully, I didn’t “demand” anything and have never in my life been referred to as a bully. The fact that I’ve never once left a negative review before speaks to how poorly my daughter and I were treated.
I’m from out of town and was visiting family. When our travel plans were delayed due to bad weather, we hoped to kill some time here, but didn’t have a reservation because we weren’t planning on being in town that day. I knew my youngest daughter wasn’t old enough to go into the lounge area, but my oldest daughter was and had been asking to go here the next time we visited my parents. My mom was with us, and could have watched my youngest if my oldest and I got in.
When we walked by, we saw the place was fully booked, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to go up to the counter and ask if there had been any cancellations or a last-minute chance to get squeezed in. I figured worst case, we could buy some coffee and let kids watch the cats from the viewing area, still giving this place our business and my daughters a chance to enjoy it.
Before I even got within 5 feet of the counter, the owner very LOUDLY declared that my kids weren’t old enough to go inside. First of all, that wasn’t true as to my oldest daughter. Second of all, the owner wasn’t apologetic about it, and at the very least could have waited until we approached her to politely and quietly explain this, rather than embarrass my 8 year old. She didn’t offer any apologies or reflect even a shred of sympathy for my disappointed daughter, but instead just said they were booked and rudely suggested we go somewhere else.
We hung around for a few minutes so my daughters could at least look inside the from viewing area while I tried to get on the online waitlist (which the owner didn’t bother to tell me about). While there, we noticed that the only 3 people who had been inside the lounge area had left, and there were 15 more minutes until the next appointment. So I approached the counter again, asking if there was any way we could be squeezed into those 15 minutes since we wouldn’t have the chance to come back any time soon. Again, I didn’t think it would hurt to ask, and thought maybe they’d appreciate making extra $$ off of a short time slot. She again rudely responded that I should take my kids elsewhere.
If the owner had shown even a shred of decency or empathy for my daughter, we would have gladly bought coffee on this visit and planned to come back another time. Instead, she was downright mean. I will take up her offer and bring my kids elsewhere next time...
Read moreUpdating on 10/21/23: The location has new owners and is now called Lazy Cat Lounge and Cafe. I visited today for the first time since the ownership change, and not much as changed besides the decor and the owners. The new owner told me all the staff is the same as well as the shelter partners they work with.
The owner is very knowledgable about cats and has done TNR work in the past (trap, neuter, return for feral cats). I had a great time talking to her and enjoyed my 25 minute visit. It's only $8 for 25 minutes and $15 for 55. There were a lot of cats at my visit (18), but none of them seemed overly stressed. Cats will be cats, so some were sleeping, some were playing, and others were in-between. It's still a great place to interact with cats and adopt from, if you're looking for a new pet. Purrs and Paws is amazing! I visited during their soft open so admission was only $2 for 15 minutes in the cafe with a drink included. At the time I'm writing this review, the soft open period is open and admission is $10 for one hour or $6 for 30 minutes. If you've never been to a cat cafe before this is pretty standard pricing.
Purrs and Paws is located in Eastview Mall across from Forever 21 and next to Von Maur. One half is a room with lots of tables where you can get drinks and snacks. The cats are in a separate room next door.
The cat room has plenty of space to sit, with couches and chairs. The cats have tons of enrichment, including toys and spaces for them to relax and take naps. All of the cats seemed very calm and were being well taken care of. Purrs and Paws works with Keller's Kats rescue and all of the cats are adoptable!
I believe all of the cats that were there (12 of them) when I visited have since been adopted, which just goes to show what great work they're doing here. It's a wonderful way to support animal rescue and also enjoy quality time with cute cats!
Keep in mind that the cats come first -- if you don't know already, cats sleep for up to 16 hours per day! They may not be very active depending on when you visit. Remember that it can be fun to just sit and relax with them if they aren't in a playful mood, and to be respectful and not bother the cats if...
Read moreI literally never take the time to write reviews, but feel a need to share my experience to prevent others from experiencing something similar. My daughter has literally waited years to come here. We have watched the cats through the window, but we respect rules and know the minimum age to visit the cats is 8 years old. As a special treat, two days after her 8th birthday, we brought her here. While checking in, the owner turned to my daughter to ask her age. My daughter was distracted by the cat toys on the desk and uttered literally 1 syllable of "s," as she is used to replying her previous age as she had only been 8 for two days. I explained that she just had a birthday and is now 8. The owner replied, "really?" In a condescending way. I said she really is 8, and the owner further started, "she doesn't look 8," and started to tell us we wouldn't be allowed in. I stated that I didn't appreciate her arguing with me about my own child's age. I was ready to walk out, but swallowed my pride for my daughter's sake and we were allowed into the lounge. The whole experience that my daughter had been looking forward to was ruined by the owner's behavior. I understand legal requirements she must abide by, but that is no excuse for the insulting way we were treated. Once we were in the lounge, the owner was polite, but the whole atmosphere was uncomfortable and the damage had already been done. I will not be returning and recommend that anyone bringing a child here also bring their birth certificate or passport to ensure they are not turned away as the owner was going to do to us. I also suggest that they rehearse their child's reply to the age question or simply share their child's age before the owner asks lest their child utter the wrong syllable. I know everyone has bad days and slips up when dealing with situations from time to time, but this was really poor treatment. I notice that it is listed as "child-friendly" in some reviews, but I would refute...
