My first impression of Peru Cuisine (in the Galleria Mall) was a pleasure; the atmosphere is relaxing, the facility had a modern feel, and the staff were friendly. Having eaten [arguably non-authentic] Peruvian food in the past, I was excited to see some of the ethnic and fused entrees on the menu, and I happily ordered a simple ceviche and a vegetarian rice dish for an early Sunday lunch.
My wife and I enjoyed a local brew (Newburgh brewery - nice!) and enjoyed casual conversation with "people watching" from our perch at the bar. The bartender, who was admittedly new, was still extremely friendly and personable and even chatty as we waited for our food.
An hour later, we still hadn't gotten our food. While I won't claim to have anything beyond a recipe-following, rudimentary understanding of the culinary arts, I was frustrated to see families enter -and leave, having eaten burgers and other typical Americana dishes- before my ceviche arrived.
Ultimately, we had to leave the restaurant before our food arrived (nearly 90 minutes after being seated), on a Sunday afternoon, prior to the mad post-church mall rush...our food that consisted of a rice dish and a pickled fish dish (ceviche), which very likely is produced and stored the day prior - an accepted and understood facet of such dishes and the restaurant business.
Adding insult to injury, three of the domestic kegs kicked as we waited for our food - to include the Newburgh and a Brooklyn Lager and a Corona - much to the dismay of the few of us (read: multiple parties) awaiting our food.
Finally, as we surpassed the hour mark, I told our poor bartender that we simply couldn't wait any longer, and that we would have to pay for our drinks and leave. The manager, rather than trying to salve the situation, said, "That's Ok," which were the most words we heard from him throughout our entire wait (at the bar).
I'd be willing to give this place a chance in the future, but only for drinks and/or typical American cuisine, and only on a weekday when I wouldn't have to compete with 3 other people for food.
Kudos to the bartender for staying calm and friendly, despite an arguably unforgivably slow, if not defunct order relay system between the bar and...
Read moreI love Peruvian food and had given them a five star rating a few years ago, but now I've become very disappointed with them. Years ago I used to order from the to-go counter that they used to have. They used to have nice sized servings for a good price and you got your food instantly. Now you have to order from the restaurant and wait but, what is much worse, is that you get hardly any food for your money. I paid $25 for chicken, rice, and beans, but only got a few small chunks of chicken breast that were hardly bigger than chicken nuggets, a mostly empty cup of beans, and a respectable serving of rice, so I basically paid $25 for rice. This was meal that I was given probably costs no more than $2 in food and packaging costs, yet they charge $25 for it. Just a few years ago, the same meal there used to cost just $10 and you got twice as much chicken. It used to be a good value, but now it's the opposite. I know that they have a lot of other expenses (rent, labor, etc...), but this is just a complete rip-off. I got such little chicken that my friend laughed at me when I showed him. It almost seemed like a prank. They could've given me twice as much chicken and beans to make me a content customer and it only would've cost them about a dollar more, if that. Chicken and beans are relatively cheap food items. You can see the pictures of what I got for $25. It's ridiculous. I used to get food from them all the time. Over the past few years though, I've only ordered from them on occasion, as they have raised their prices and are giving smaller portions. Now I don't know if I'll be going there anymore. Maybe they're taking advantage because now they're the only Peruvian restaurant in town for the moment, but I can still order from the multiple Peruvian restaurants in Newburgh until a new place opens over here in Middletown. Their food is pretty good and I want to support this business, but it's just a rip-off now....
Read moreThe food was delicious The service today was atrocious, our female server was the worst, she looked bothered when we asked her for absolutely anything. We spent so much money since we were a large party, but we will not be returning due to the horrible service. We stopped by with a large party of 7 to celebrate July 28th, Peru's independence day We spent about $300 and the food was great, however, the service as mentioned above was far more than disappointing. When we arrived there were only 5 tables, I approached the Bar and asked a server if he could sit us, and he told me to hold on because he was really busy. We waited around 20 minutes at the bar when I saw the server on his phone and I approached the female server instead, I told her that we had been waiting and if she could sit us and she said "why didn't you tell me earlier", she said let me clean a table and ill sit you, another 20 minutes went by, and no one approached us, at this point, we decided to put tables together and sit, the food came out late, the server didn't even want to give us our drinks, I would be more understanding if she was in the weeds, but the restaurant was empty, and she was extremely rude. To top it all off the tip was included at 18% which is far less than she deserved. They need to get better staff on board in order for their business to flourish, we will only be returning...
