I stopped in for a late weekday lunch at this restaurant at one end of a strip-mall. I was a bit wary, a little concerned after reading the reviews.
The server escorted me over to the classically-decorated 7-seat sushi bar with paper napkins and waribashi (photo). The chef was pleasant enough, interacting amicably with a couple of other regular patrons sitting around the restaurant.
I glanced through the bound menu, accented with a handful of colorful photographs of someone else's sushi. (The price points for much of the fish and vegetable nigiri seemed strange, leaving me wondering on their fish sourcing costs.) The server apparently had some difficulty understanding my ordering so even I tried pointing to each individual item I selected, and I still ended up with a few small mistakes.
I'm sure that doesn't have anything to do with the throwback to "ye olden days" - handwritten orders used not just for note taking, but for billing as well. Of course I trust the math of someone who has already made mistakes on my order. If the barely legible bill (photo) was written in Japanese, I probably would have thought the whole thing clever.
Anyway, after an unremarkable bland soup, the chef presented me with my main. Without decoration, and at the brightly-lit sushi bar, it was difficult for him to hide the poor presentation of the tamago or the maki. The not-rolled egg custard was falling apart and not-spicy salmon paste maki had far too much "crunch" filler added, enough to be easily seen (photo).
Although the server made an error with my order, I usually don't mention it - sometimes I am pleasantly surprised with what could be called a mistake. I only complain if the accidentally exchanged item is extremely bad. It wasn't. The rice itself was not too bad, but seasoned much less than I prefer. But the nigiri were unfortunately average at best.
I guess I just expected more from Saratoga. I may come back, but it will be a...
Read moreI normally come here with no issues, it's a reasonable priced place for its sushi. However when I went my waiter visited our table twice the entire visit. He forgot our drinks, and I had to remind him multiple times. My boyfriend wanted a soda and me a water, and he used my boyfriends have full glass of Sprite and FILLED IT WITH WATER and brought that to our table without the other drinks. At this point we figured we would share it since he forgot our drinks the entire time, but when we both took a sip we wanted to vomit. Nothing like extremely diluted carbonated water with slight lemon flavor. We sat for about 15 more minutes with empty dishes while there was one other table at the restaurant. I was so thirsty, I ended up asking for a water when we left because I didnt get my drink the entire time we were there....
Read moreI've never actually eaten in the inside so I don't know what the atmosphere is like but everybody's always been nice to me on the phone and the food comes packaged very well. I've done reviews on Yelp but I don't think I've done the Google review. I did not take a picture tonight I did not order a lot tonight but what I got was perfection lovely stuff spicy tuna hand roll with slice of avocado and two pieces of eel that were just so pumped and juicy and flavorful. I am so happy. I'm not sure who created those beautiful pieces of exquisitiveness that I ate but I thank them so much. I wish I had taken pictures. Flavors in my mouth right now still after I'm done eating are so amazing. I am so happy. I know it doesn't sound like I got a lot but it was the...
