I was getting tired of the direction ice cream was taking in general. It just wasn't good anymore no matter how much I had tried new flavors or brands. UDF used to be pretty good but nowadays is a joke and most all of their ice cream is made with skim milk which made it lack any sort of creamy goodness at its base. There are some soft serve places that make out of this world soft serve, and if you think I mean DQ then you've never had really good soft serve.
One day on a lark driving home from Kings Island my son and I pulled through Culver's. I'd seen their ads a ton of times and wondered what frozen custard had that made it different than ice cream (basically they're the same thing but made with vastly different techniques and ingredients). At the time I was blown away and thought Culver's was what I was looking for. It had the rich flavor ice cream was lacking.
Then not long after my wife told me they were building a Whit's in our town. A friend of mine had worked at one in their town but it was hours away. However, he stood firm that it is the best. I waited and waited for our Whit's to finally open so I could see if he was right.
The day came and my wife and I went over to get some. The place is simple, the menu is simply laid out and easy to navigate with a variety of options, and a couple of freezers with various treats they make in the store. I found Culver's to be a really cumbersome ordering experience so it was nice to see a menu with toppings, what you can get in what ways, some named things with toppings to fit to get you started, pricing, and that's it. We ordered and waited.
To say that we were blown away by Whit's custard is a tremendous understatement. It was everything that I wanted in ice cream and was missing. It's rich. It's creamy. It's amazing by itself and I do not like plain vanilla anything, ever. Honestly if you put more than three of any of the available toppings in your order you are doing yourself a disservice because you are covering up the flavor of the base custard too much. You can get chocolate custard also which is to die for but it doesn't pair well with my favorite toppings for my palette.
They will always offer you a sample of the flavor of the day/week and you should always say yes because you think you know what it tastes like but you really don't. It's that good. I cannot, and actively refuse to eat ice cream of any variety (unless it comes from The Cone) because Whit's is that good. It will change your idea of what ice cream should be. It's really made with just a couple of ingredients and is most likely better for you to eat than any other ice cream you'd buy at a store or even some shops.
My metric for whether or not a custard can compete with Whit's is thus: Will it freezer burn? It take a long time for Whit's to get ice crystals of any kind in it. In fact it's only happened to one pint we've bought. Culver's burns within a week. Freddie's within a couple of days and that's if it doesn't come freezer burnt already (in the ice cream sandwich type form at least). Whit's is consistent in flavor from the time you start eating it to the time you finish even if you don't finish it for a week or a month. This has held true for our Whit's since they opened and for my friend who works at a different one for the two years he's been there.
You absolutely will not find a better 'ice cream' anywhere. They have a vegan vanilla too if that's your thing, or lactose intolerant as it is otherwise made with whole milk. The pints, quarts, cakes, etc. all have the ingredients printed on them for everything/topping in them if you're concerned about that as well. There isn't one ingredient on there that concerns me and I've become much more strict about what exactly I'll eat if it contains some things.
If you've been wanting an actual, really good ice cream that is filled with flavor, doesn't taste like old processed garbage that is probably fake or made with faux ingredients (like the essence of strawberry instead of actual strawberries) then you want Whit's.
Oh, and...
Read moreWe moved back to this area after 9 years in STL where Frozen Custard is a religious experience! Hard to find it here, so when Whit's opened up, it got our attention. The service is friendly and efficient. The custard is excellent. My only suggestion is that they might want to research some of the terminology of the custard world. It would make ordering a little easier. But if you want good frozen custard, Whit's...
Read moreThis is a delightful place to get a frozen treat when the craving for sweets hit. I can tell that Whit's is going to serve the Trenton community well for many years to come
Their staff are always friendly, the custard is incredibly creamy, and the creations that you can come up with are just plain delectable. My favorite so far is the Hawaiian Lu'au, but sometimes I'll opt for a...
