My wife and I were in Richmond for the weekend 8/16-8/18/2024. Our favorite food has always been Chinese. When checking out restaurants in Richmond near where we were staying we decided to go to Yen Ching on W. Broad Street. When we walked in the door we were pleasantly greeted by a gentleman who thanked us for coming, and then took us to a booth. As we were looking thru the menu, (which had so many of our favorites) our waiter came to the table and greeted us. I told him we were from North Carolina and it was our first time here and we needed a few minutes to decide. I had found a menu item we never had, and I asked my wife if she found something to her liking. She told me the beef and chicken dish with pea pods, red peppers, celery in a Chinese sauce. I closed the menu and told her that is what I picked too. No further discussion was needed. Kevin, our waiter, came to the table and asked if we were ready to order. We each ordered an egg roll and told him the dish we selected to share. It came with fried rice. As we waited, we both remarked about the decorations, running water fountain, all around decor, and soft oriental music. The over-all atmosphere was just amazing. We both mentioned great Chinese restaurants from different parts of the country Yen Ching reminded us of. The food was fantastic. The egg rolls were true Chinese egg rolls and delicious. The main course when served, on a large square dish, looked so good. The delicious taste confirmed what our eyes told us. The beef and chicken was tender, as were all the vegetables, with the Chinese sauce making the dish outstanding. During the entire dinner, our waiter, Kevin, was right on the spot with his perfect service and courtesy. Even taking our plates away when he finished eating, something you seldom see in today's world. We ate every morsal of food, including scraping the square serving platter clean. Yen Ching ownership and staff and both front and back of the house staff deserve a sixth star, that was how great our visit was....
Read moreI ate here Sunday Nov. 17th for dinner with my boyfriend & our family. We ordered the wonton soup, egg drop soup, sesame chicken, sweet & sour chicken, & the crispy honey chicken. The veggies in the sweet & sour chicken were hard & they dumped them all on top of the chicken so it became soggy immediately. The honey chicken had an odd crispy coating on it & our kids usually enjoy the chicken but refused to eat it. The only thing that was eaten was the soup. None of the other food had flavor or proper seasoning.
Well okay it happens — but our plan was to take the food to go, add more seasoning, & cook it in the air fryer. Sadly all of our food got ruined because our server decided to rush & start cleaning our table while we were packing our food. She quickly took our drinks away & one slipped out of her hand & she lost her grip — dumping ice water all over us. The glass cup broke as well & sent not only ice water but glass all over the table, our food, & on our laps. We stayed calm, hoping that they would make it right, BUT our server who is also THE OWNER simply said sorry, gave us a check close to $80 for food that we now can’t eat, & the only thing she sent us home with that didn’t have glass was a tiny thing of fried rice from the kitchen.
I have known about & eaten this restaurant for several years & have enjoyed it in the past, but ever since COVID the quality went way down & the prices went up, & the owners literally don’t give a crap lol. Anyways take your money & use it elsewhere!! My stomach has been hurting all night from eating just a few pieces of their chicken. Sadly, this establishment is falling apart & I do not plan to...
Read moreFood was pretty good. Not the best but certainly not the worst from a Chinese restaurant. But holy cow! The sticker shock gave me a heart attack. I ordered my family's usual that I've ALWAYS bought from Chinese restaurants. 2x General Tso, 1x chicken fried rice, 1x Crab Rangoon, 1x Beef lo Mein (We USUALLY get 2) and, 4 egg rolls.
Price? $77 and some change. This meal even earlier during the Pandemic? with larger portions? No more then $55 including tax. As a first time customer, I hope this is due to the horrible inflation. Otherwise, I'm sorry, the food was good, but not $77 good. Especially when the portion sizes were smaller then I'm used to as well. No choice for larger sizes, and the size I got especially with the General Tso's, was horrible.
Notes: keep in mind I usually buy 2x Lo Mein , and other places I've ordered from have a Small and large of the sides and we always go for the large.) Earlier during the Pandemic, would have cost no more then $55. And again, that's considering large sizes.
The person who took my order also didn't tell me the price on the phone. So that also contributed to the "sticker shock."
So keep this in mind if you are looking for another favorite Chinese restaurant. (I've only been in the area 6 months and my family usually eats at Hibachi Sushi and Supreme Buffet.)
If anyone who's lived in the area since at least the early Pandemic, before inflation occurred, PLEASE tell me if these prices are out of the ordinary. (Meaning, they are so high due to...
