I went there with my husband about two months ago to have breakfast and the cashier lady was very rude since we got there but we still ate then i asked for a soda can to take n the cashier said to me "we only have fountain soda, are you gonna want it yes or no?" VERY VERY RUDE! So we said yeah thats fine...n we left very disappointed and mentioned how miserable that lady was. Then today my husband was taking my son to school and he asked my son if he wanted to stop there for a burrito, since its on his way to school. When they asked for a burrito with egg, potato,no beans to the cook,n she said its not how we make it,the potatoe goes on the side cause the tortilla is to small. But my husband said well can u just put less potato? And she said ok..Then when she was wrapping it he asked if she could put it in a different box they use for food to go also,n when the cook was,the cashier lady asked the cook,'' what are you doing?'' and the cook said,im wraping his burrito in this box he asked for..n the cashier said ,no its not how we do it...n my husband said..i asked her to put it on that one cause its easier for my son...n the cashier told my husband..""oh so now your gonna tell me how to do things around here? so my husband ended up asking for the money back and told her''you just lost a customer for a container, and what are you gonna do with the burrito now?''and the cashier said ill eat it...and of course he asked for the owners number but she gave him the business number where she answers...if you end up going there im warning you, they are dirty,look...
Read moreThis is an underrated gem in a city filled with Mexican food restaurants that are overpriced and get national attention. I started going here in the 80s when I was in high school. Man, it used to be really cheap, lol. The birria is great, and it was one of the first places in Tucson that served it, hence the really fun to say ,"birrieria", like cafeteria. I only had birria in Mexico before, often with 🐐 goat or sometimes lamb. Now, birria has had its viral moment, and it is offered everywhere, often replacing another Sonoran staple (and so damn good!), machaca and close cousin, carne seca. The food here is made with love, simple but perfectly so. The ingredients are authentic and high quality. Everything is worth trying, but the most cravable thing for me is their refried beans. (With lard, I know. But, it's so damn good! ). In a town with so many great Mexican food restaurants, this little humble family run spot (too small to get the attention it deserves!), this place shines! In my opinion, the beans are the best in town. I'll think about a bean and cheese burro all day. My old favorite refried beans were from El Grande Tortilla Factory. But these frijoles were practically tied, and Grande has sadly been closed for years now. You can also buy them by the quart to use at home. While the atmosphere isn't particularly elegant, it's drenched in Tucson charm and vibes. A place you will miss every day if you move away. A place you should try today if you live here. Mmmm. Now I know what I'm having...
Read moreCold place on loud corner hacking mex food. Totally INAUTHENTIC! No condiment bar, no salsa verde, etc. ONE simple, hot flavorless "sauce" likely made only with ground dried red peppers and hot water. Birria a bit tough, broth a bit oily(as in vegetable oil, not beef fat), bland flavors. Tortillas were semi fried dry and oily. Old tortillas, not fresh masa. Condiment served were shredded lettuce in a bag. These people don't even spring for cabbage.
Ordered eggs over easy on ranchera with soft yolks. Got brown eggs with hard yolks served on an oily fried tortilla. "Ranchera" consisted mostly wilty looking green bell peppers and a canned looking Tomato sauce. Looks like something that sets in a soup pan all day and gets poured over rather than fresh vegetables cooked from scratch on the grill AS IS THE AUTHENTIC WAY!
Unfortunately, this is par for the area as all the "Mexican food" joints around here seem to suck!
Massive amount of homeless creeping around the area and a soup kitchen for them two blocks away where they hang...
